Texas Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley went into head coach Joey McGuire's office one day in late June and made a declaration: He has to make 13 personnel an option at times this coming season, because the team's tight ends "are three of our best guys." The Raiders are enthusiastic about the possibilities offered by returnees Mason Tharp and Henry Teeter and newly arrived transfer Baylor Cupp from Texas A&M. Tharp is 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds, Cupp 6-7 and 253, Teeter 6-5 and 240.

"All three have really good hands, they pose a problem for defenses because of their size," McGuire said, "and then the one thing I was really happy about with Mason is how physical he became during spring. He was a lot more physical from the beginning to the end." Tech operated almost exclusively in 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end) during the 2019 and 2020 seasons with David Yost as offensive coordinator. Last year, with Sonny Cumbie calling the offense, the Red Raiders continued to deploy mostly 11-personnel, but mixing in a good bit of 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends). Of the three Tech tight ends who played regularly last season, two-year starter Travis Koontz graduated, Tharp and Teeter are back and Cupp can be a replacement of sorts for Koontz. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
