Tyler Shough was loping along near the front of the pack during a team conditioning run one day this summer when a long-legged Texas Tech teammate blew past him. It wasn't any of the Red Raiders' lanky wide receivers, nor a defensive back or a running back. The guy finishing strong was Baylor Cupp, a 6-foot-7, 253-pound tight end. "I'm usually out in the front with a lot of that combo group," Shough said, "and I see Baylor come up and fly by me. I'm like, 'What the heck? Where did this guy come from?'...He's so physically talented." There's never been a question about Cupp's talent level. Coming out of Texas high-school power Brock in the spring of 2019, Cupp was rated the No. 16 recruit in the nation by 247Sports and No. 134 by Rivals. As tight end prospects go, he was as good as it gets.

In three years since at Texas A&M, Cupp missed two full seasons with ankle and shoulder injuries. He finally got onto the field for 10 games last year, mostly as a backup. Nevertheless, thinking his status in the Aggies' eyes might have been diminished by his injury history and not wanting to be labeled, Cupp looked for a fresh start this off-season. He's found it at Texas Tech, where coaches and teammates want to see him reach his potential. As recently as November, A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said Cupp "still has a chance to be a great player." "I was pretty highly recruited and people had a high expectation for me," Cupp said. "Those were some really tough injuries, and I haven't played much since I got into college, but I think I'm 10 times a better player than I was coming out of high school. I've developed a ton. I just need to stay healthy and put that on the field." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

2022 PRESEASON JOHN MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST: BAYLOR CUPP, TEXAS TECH,...Cupp joined the Red Raiders this summer from Texas A&M where he appeared in 10 games one season ago. In his third season as an Aggie, Cupp made his collegiate debut in the third game of this past season after injuries held him out over his first two seasons. Cupp was the No. 1 tight end recruit in the country for the 2019 class by 247Sports and the No. 2 prospect by Rivals upon signing out of high school. He was ranked 16th among recruits nationally and second among those in the state of Texas by 247Sports that year. - Texas Tech Football

Texas Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley went into head coach Joey McGuire's office one day in late June and made a declaration: He has to make 13 personnel an option at times this coming season, because the team's tight ends "are three of our best guys." The Raiders are enthusiastic about the possibilities offered by returnees Mason Tharp and Henry Teeter and newly arrived transfer Baylor Cupp from Texas A&M. Tharp is 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds, Cupp 6-7 and 253, Teeter 6-5 and 240.

"All three have really good hands, they pose a problem for defenses because of their size," McGuire said, "and then the one thing I was really happy about with Mason is how physical he became during spring. He was a lot more physical from the beginning to the end." Tech operated almost exclusively in 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end) during the 2019 and 2020 seasons with David Yost as offensive coordinator. Last year, with Sonny Cumbie calling the offense, the Red Raiders continued to deploy mostly 11-personnel, but mixing in a good bit of 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends). Of the three Tech tight ends who played regularly last season, two-year starter Travis Koontz graduated, Tharp and Teeter are back and Cupp can be a replacement of sorts for Koontz. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Former Texas A&M tight end Baylor Cupp signed with Texas Tech on Tuesday. "Baylor will be a big-time addition to our tight ends room," Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in a press release. "He has great size and runs well in space, which is exactly what we are looking for at tight end in this offense. We are excited to welcome him and his family to our football program, and we can't wait until he arrives on campus this summer." Cupp, who suffered a pair of season-ending injuries at A&M, will have three years of eligibility left. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Texas A&M redshirt freshman tight end Baylor Cupp dislocated his shoulder and tore his labrum at practice, his mother confirmed via social media Thursday afternoon. "He had surgery this morning and it went good," Shyrell Hebert Cupp said on Facebook. "Prayers appreciated for complete healing." The 6-foot-6, 240-pound Brock missed last season after breaking an ankle in the first scrimmage of fall camp. Fisher had praised Cupp after the first week of drills. "His ankle has had no problems, and if it did, he wouldn't tell you," Fisher said. "That is one tough son-of-gun now. He's competitive. He's got great heart. I have a ton of respect for how he goes about his game." Cupp was projected to be the starter last season. He was replaced by Jalen Wydermyer, who had 32 catches for 447 yards and six touchdown and made the All-Southeastern Conference freshman team. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Texas A&M lost a rising piece to its offense during Monday's scrimmage. Freshman tight end Baylor Cupp suffered a broken left ankle in the Aggies' scrimmage Monday night on Kyle Field. "He'll be out for a while" due to the injury, Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said. Cupp had surgery Tuesday. "He had a plate put on his ankle, tibia, on the lower part of his leg," Fisher said. "He'll be out for a while. Just got rolled up on. That was the only major injury we had in the scrimmage.

"Baylor was playing really good football. He was actually having a really good scrimmage, doing a really nice job. We hate to see that, but he'll get healed up and get back. He's still going to be one heck of a player and he was having a heck of a camp." - Dallas Morning News
