Ohio State's eight first-round defensive backs selected over the past decade are easily the most among the DBU contenders. However, it has not recruited a first-round defensive back - or even one selected on the first two days of the draft - since Okudah in 2017. Every other contender for the ongoing title of DBU has produced at least one pick in the top three rounds in the past two drafts. LSU, Virginia Tech and Washington have each produced two. The Tigers, Hokies, Alabama and Florida all developed fi rst-round picks.The Crimson Tide are the only one from that group currently projected to have a first-round DB in April's draft. The list of contenders to sneak into the top 32 picks includes secondary athletes from Illinois, Maryland, Mississippi State and South Carolina. Utah's Clark Phillips III - the OSU decommit who represents the biggest hole in the defense over the past two seasons - also has an outside chance to make the first round. That deficiency was still being addressed this winter, when OSU added former Ole Miss cornerback Davison Igbinosun and former Syracuse safety Ja'Had Carter through the transfer portal. Secondary coach Tim Hinton acknowledge the need to ramp up competition, especially in the cornerback room. "During the recru iting process, we try to get the best guys in the country - to make sure the room is deep, the room is always upgraded, and make sure we keep the competition good," Hinton said earlier this spring. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State football finally found the cornerback help from the transfer portal it has needed for two seasons. Davison Igbinosun, a freshman starter at Ole Miss last season, committed to Ohio State on Tuesday, as first reported by On3?s Hayes Fawcett. The freshman All-American per College Football News recently visited Columbus, as well as Michigan, Tennessee and UCLA. With his combination of starting experience and performance, he immediately jumps into starting consideration for a fairly inexperienced Buckeye cornerback group. "I've been an Ohio State fan my entire life and everything worked out in my favor to get there," Igbinosun told On3. "They have a history of producing first-round cornerbacks and I want to be next. Another huge reason is their r eceiving core. They're the best wideouts in college football and competing against the best everyday will only make me better."Unlike some of OSU's most successful portal additions, Igbinosun can provide long-term help with three years of eligibil ity remaining. The Buckeyes were also able to pick up a player Michigan also pursued. Igbinosun visited Ann Arbor after visiting Columbus last week. The 6-2, 185-pound Igbinosun posted 37 tackles, five pass breakups. A former four-star, top-200 prospect out of Union, N.J., he started 10 of 13 games. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Lane Kiffin hasn't relied too heavily on true freshmen in his two years at Ole Miss, but one of the highest-rated prospects he's ever signed looks poised to break that trend this fall. Freshman cornerback Davison Igbinosun enrolled at Ole Miss in January as a four-star recruit from New Jersey. Ranked the No.162 prospect in the 247 Sports composite rankings, Igbinosun was the second-best rated recruit in the Rebels' Class of 2022 and the third-best across the three classes Kiffin has signed in Oxford. Igbinosun's pedigree matches the rave reviews he's drawn in the first two weeks of preseason practices. Building off a solid spring, Igbinosun has rotated with the first-team defense, using his 6-foot-2 frame and impressive athleticism to earn playin g time early in his career. "He really stands out to me as a freshman cornerback," third-year linebacker Austin Keys says. "He came in and he already looked like a vet." Igbinosun's physical tools and instincts are immediately obvious at practice.
