It's been a long time coming, but the time has finally arrived - Khyiris Tonga declared for the NFL draft. The defensive tackle is the latest Cougar to make the move to the next level, as he announced Thursday afternoon via social media. Offensive linema n Brady Christensen and wide receiver Dax Milne both opted out of coming back for their senior season for a chance at the NFL draft. As a 6-foot-4, 321-pound nose tackle, Tonga set the tone for the defensive line that held just about every opponent below their scoring average. During the 2020 season, Tonga recorded a total of 36 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, three quarterback hurries and five pass breakups. - Salt Lake Tribune

PLAYERS TO WATCH: While the BYU defense graduated many key contributors after the 2019 season, the Cougars bring back a number of veterans including four players coming off red-shirt seasons. Khyiris Tonga returns for his senior season after forgoing the 2019 NFL Draft. Seniors Zayne Anderson, Troy Warner and Chris Wilcox who all have significant playing time will make their comeback after injuries during both the 2018 and 2019 season. Tonga has played in 39 games, starting 21. He posted 45 tackles in 2 019 with 4 tackles for loss and one sack and has seven career pass breakups, including two against USC. - BYU Football

Senior Khyiris Tonga will look to lead the charge this year after almost leaving the program early to enter the NFL Draft. Tonga, who was named to the 2020 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, which is awarded to the nation's most outstanding defensive pla yer, has played 39 career games with 21 starts. In 2019, he made 45 total tackles and 4.0 tackles for loss. Tonga is also on the 2020 Outland Trophy Watch List. Defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki said, the moment Tonga decided to come back to Provo, the defensive lineman started working his butt off. That was in January, leading up to spring ball."He looked like a different guy," Tuiaki said. "For me, I was really excited that he made the decision to come back because now he looks like what an N FL D-tackle should look like and he is playing with a lot more confidence in the way he is aligning and playing off things. When he was playing in practice, he was really disruptive, and that is what you want to see from someone of that caliber." Tonga w ill be a key cog. But because the defense rotates constantly, depth will be key to having a successful line. That could be provided in part by 6-3, 287-pound redshirt senior Bracken El-Bakri and 6-5, 260-pound freshman Tyler Batty. - Salt Lake Tribune
