Kentucky running back AJ Rose announced today he is entering the 2021 NFL Draft. The Cleveland, OH native rushed for a personal best 148 yards in the win last Saturday over NC State in the Gator Bowl. Rose rushed for 666 yards and two touchdowns in the 2020 season. - WHOP News Radio, Kentucky

A.J. Rose ran for a career-high 148 yards, Chris Rodriguez added 84 yards and two scores and Kentucky held off No. 24 North Carolina State 23-21 in a chippy TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Saturday. Christopher Dunn missed two field goals for the Wolfpack (8-4), who trailed 16-14 late when Bailey Hockman threw his third interception of the game. Rodriguez scored on the ensuing play, going nearly untouched for 26 yards.

NC State got a final chance after Jordan Houston scored with 1:10 remaining. But Allen Dailey recovered Dunn's onside kick, and the Wildcats (5-6) ran out the clock. Coach Mark Stoops got a Gatorade bath following the team's third straight bowl victory, which ended a tumultuous season that included the loss of offensive line coach John Schlarman. - AP College Football

  10/05/20 - RB Asim RoserSr/2021, Kentucky, 6-1, 215 (DS#32 RB) + More +

Rose opened the game with a 72-yard carry on Kentucky's first offensive play, but he was brought down from behind short of the end zone after he appeared to slow while celebrating his impending score. Two plays later, Rose lost a fumble while trying to extend over a pile into the end zone. "We will certainly point out and show him, and he understands that, that it's not acceptable," Stoops said. "That's not how we do things. That's not how we're going to do it." The embarrassing sequence could have easily relegated Rose to the bench for the rest of the game, especially considering UK's other talent at running back, but he was back in the huddle just two drives later and rewarded offensive coordinator Eddie Gran's loyalty with 20 yards on two carries, including a 2-yard touchdown earned with an extra effort to fight through tacklers. Rose, a fifth-year senior, has to know better than to make a mistake like celebrating too early, but he showed why UK coaches have raved about his progress with the way he responded. "It definitely has an impact," Stoops said. "It definitely is not the right message. It's not OK, but I'm not going to give up on him for one mistake." - Courier Journal

Pittsburgh Steelers fans are learning something Kentucky football fans have long known: It's dangerous to ever underestimate Benny Snell. After a middling rookie season, Snell opened 2020 with 113 yards in the Steelers' season-opening Monday night win over the New York Giants. Now, Steelers fans wonder if Snell could take over the starting job full time. Meanwhile, the running back some recruiting pundits projected to be better than Snell in Kentucky's 2016 recruiting class might be poised for a breakout season of his own. "I feel like A.J. (Rose) is pushing himself to another level, which is really good," UK coach Mark Stoops said on his radio show Monday. "...A.J. has been around here for a while. He's ripped off some big runs for us in the past. I feel like he's more physical than he's been. I feel like he's squaring his shoulders up, he's running the ball down field, he's getting the tough 2 yards when you need 2 yards."

Snell and Rose were both three-star prospects in UK's 2016 class, but Rivals.com gave Rose a 5.6 rating and Snell a 5.5. Rose ended up redshirting in his first year on campus while Snell forced Kentucky coaches to play him right away as a freshman. Snell became the first player in program history to record three straight 1,000-yard seasons before declaring for the 2019 NFL draft, where the Steelers selected him in the fourth round. Snell leaving Kentucky a year early for the NFL and Rose's freshman redshirt provided Rose two years as the Wildcats' starter outside the shadow of his fellow Ohio native. Rose started all 13 games for Kentucky last season, but he split carries with redshirt freshmen Kavosiey Smoke and Chris Rodriguez. - Courier Journal
