For the University of Hawaii football team, spring practice ended almost as soon as it began. The Rainbow Warriors were the second earliest team in the country to begin spring practices on Feb. 6, only behind Bowling Green. On Friday, spring ball ended for the 'Bows in order to cater to construction set to take place at UH-Manoa's grass practice fields, as well as the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

Over the last four weeks, the Rainbow Warriors installed a base run and shoot playbook on offense, which the team plans to run under the guidance of head coach Timmy Chang, who ran the offense himself for UH from 2000 to 2004. Hawaii's 2023 schedule, which was released on Thursday, begins on Aug. 26 at Vanderbilt. - KHon2.com

It appears football's run-and-shoot offense was designed with Tylan Hines in mind. This spring training, Hawaii's Hines has been practicing as both a running back and slot receiver."It's been fun trying to learn both sides to the best of my knowledge," said Texas-reared Hines, who will be a sophomore this coming season. In 2022, Hines had 97 touches - 83 rushes, nine catches, five returns - and a pancake block. "Honestly, running back comes more naturally to me, but I can be a receiver, as well," Hines said. "They're both fun."

Hines has been cross-training for a multi-purpose role since he was old enough to carry the groceries into his family home. "You can't drop the bread," he said, smiling, of the high-and-tight grip he still uses. "I tried not to drop anything. I liked to make one trip and carry (all the groceries)." At 5 feet 7 and 170 pounds, Hines is a mouthpiece-loosening blocker and stubborn runner. Last season, he averaged 3.87 post-contact rushing yards. His best running lanes were up the gut, where he averaged 9.7 yards. When targeted on crossing routes, he caught 71.5% of the passes for an average of 15 yards per reception. - Honolulu Advertiser

On Thursday, UH safety Kona Moore and another defensive back collided during a 7-on-7 drill. Moore, who had limited motion for several minutes, was taken by ambulance to The Queen's Medical Center. It appears Moore suffered from a "stinger." He was released from the hospital on Friday morning. "It looks to be OK right now," Chang said after Friday's practice. "He wants to get back on the field already. He wants to be with his guys. He's a tough kid. Love him. The boys love him. It's positive news for us he's better." - Honolulu Advertiser

In an effort to overhaul its roster following the mass exodus of the Todd Graham era, 53 newcomers joined the University of Hawaii football team in 2022, while an additional 30 players signed in advance of the 2023 season. Among the players who joined the Rainbow Warriors seeking a fresh start is former Kansas receiver Steven McBride, who caught 20 passes for 128 yards and no touchdowns over his three seasons. He'll have two seasons of eligibility remaining at UH. "It's crazy to come out here in paradise, to have a fresh start," McBride told KHON2 sports director Rob DeMello. "You know, just come and feel what is way, way different than the mainland so that's what I really like about here. Just getting around exploring the island and just Hawaii period is crazy."

McBride joins an inexperienced wide receivers room at Hawaii but one that figures to have its yardage total go up across the board as the program returns to the run and shoot offense. "I mean, my focus is making a big impact on the team, playing my position, playing my position total to the max and using my talent to impact the team. I'm looking to be one of the receivers to make a big impact on it, be a part of it," McBride said of the run and shoot. "It's a different type of offense that I've been through and I've been through a lot of offenses, but this one is is unique for the game." - Khon2.com

The run and shoot offense, which became synonymous with the University of Hawaii football program two decades ago when June Jones was coaching the team, made a full-fledged return on Monday morning when the Rainbow Warriors kicked off spring practice. Hawaii went 3-10 in Timmy Chang's first season as head coach in 2022. The Rainbow Warriors did not run the run and shoot in 2022 under new offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker, although certain run and shoot concepts were installed during the team's bye week after the team had started 1-4. Starting in 2023, the Rainbow Warriors will fully be a run and shoot team under Chang, who ran the offense himself as a quarterback for UH from 2000 to 2004, becoming the NCAA's all-time leading passer in the process until he was surpassed by Houston's Case Keenum in 2011.

The first quarterback to get a crack at running the run and shoot in a game this fall appears to be Brayden Schager, a junior who spent portions of his first two seasons starting games for the 'Bows. Despite that, he has yet to enter a college season as a starter. Schager also spent part of his winter break working with former UH quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison in the Dallas area, where Morrison helped Schager work on some run and shoot concepts and drills conducive to running the offense. - Khon2.com

Brayden Schager threw three touchdown passes and Dedrick Parson had 19 carries for 115 yards - including a 34-yard touchdown with 2:51 to play and Hawaii beat UNLV 31-25 Saturday night. Schager completed 16 of 27 passes for 202 yards with no interceptions for Hawaii (3-9, 2-5 Mountain West Conference). The Rainbow Warriors snapped a four-game losing streak. UNLV (4-7, 2-5) has lost six games in a row after winning four of its first five games this season. Adam Plant Jr.'s strip-sack of Schager was returned for a touchdown by Elijah Shelton to trim the Runnin' Rebels' deficit to 24-22 with 8:13 to play but Parson's TD gave the Rainbow Warriors a nine-point lead with 2:51 to play. University of Hawaii offensive lineman Ilm Manning's college football career will go into overtime. Manning said he has been asked to play in the 98th East West Shrine Bowl in Las Vegas. The invitation-only all-star game is set for Feb. 2, 2023, in Allegiant Stadium. "Its an honor and privilege to showcase my skills and represent Hawaii at the same time," said Manning, a fifth-year senior from Glendale, Ariz. "All the NFL scouts will be there. Win or lose, it's going to be fun." Manning has played left tackle in 57 UH games, starting 55 of them, of a possible 59 games. He has not allowed a sack in the past 151 pass plays. Manning, who is 6 feet 4 and 295 pounds, projects to compete at guard or center at the next level. During Tuesday's two-hour practice, Manning took some reps at center. "It was fun," Manning said. Brayden Schager threw a go-ahead touchdown pass to Zion Bowens, Dedrick Parson added three short scoring runs and Hawaii cruised to a 31-16 victory over Nevada on Saturday night. Parson scored from a yard out on the opening possession to give Hawaii (2-5, 1-1 Mountain West Conference) a 7-0 lead. Nevada (2-5, 0-3) answered with a 16-play, 75-yard drive capped by Devonte Lee's 1-yard plunge to knot the score. Schager gave the Rainbow Warriors the lead for good when he hooked up with Bowens for a 48-yard touchdown with 2:21 left in the first quarter. Parson sandwiched a 9-yard scoring run around two field goals by the Wolf Pack's Matthew Killam and Hawaii led 21-13 at halftime.

Killam's 20-yard field goal in the third quarter cut Nevada's deficit to 21-16, but the Rainbow Warriors wrapped up the victory with a 16-play, 65-yard drive in the fourth quarter that took 8:06 off the clock and ended with Parson's 2-yard run. Schager completed 13 of 25 passes for 173 yards with one interception for Hawaii. Parson carried 24 times for 136 yards. Bowens had four receptions for 79 yards. OCT 10 MAC WEST DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Lucas Borrow, Ball State, P, So., Newcastle, NSW, Australia (Cardiff HS),...Lucas Borrow had his arguably his best game in a Cardinal uniform with nine punts for an average of 45.6 yards per boot in a 17-16 win at Central Michigan. The sophomore landed four punts land inside the 20-yard line. Borrow launched three punts over 50 yards, including a career-long 62-yard boot that completely flipped the field from the Ball State 30 all the way to the Central Michigan 8-yard line. Borrow's four punts inside the 20 on Saturday was more than he produced all of last season. Through his nine punts, none of them landed in the end zone. Borrow's 14 punts inside the 20 this season are the most among all punters in the MAC. - MAC Football

Dedrick Parson ran for two first-half touchdowns, Penei Pavihi returned and interception 50 yards for a touchdown and Hawaii beat Duquesne 24-14 Saturday night. Parson finished with 11 carries for 52 yards. Duquesne (1-2) took nearly-8 minutes off the clock with a 14-play, 56-yard drive in the first quarter before settling for a 26-yard field goal by Brian Bruzdewicz that made it 3-0 but Parson answered with a 5-yard touchdown run less than 2 minutes later and scored on a run from 17 yards out to give Hawaii a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter. Bruzdewicz added a 30-yard field goal as time expired in the first half but after Pavihi's pick-6 early in the fourth quarter before Matthew Shipley made a 29-yard field goal with 6:33 to play that made it 24-6.
