12/21/17 - 2017 AFCA FCS COACHES' FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: LB Darius Leonard, 6-3 235, RSr., South Carolina State, Buddy Pough Lake View, S.C. (Lake View),...Leonard finished the season with 114 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and two interceptions for the Bulldogs. Those numbers also earned Leonard the 2017 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season. 09/17/17 - Bruce Johnson returned an interception for a touchdown, Cornelius Walker scored on a blocked punt and South Carolina State routed Johnson C Smith 41-0 on Saturday in the Bulldogs' home opener. South Carolina State (1-1) held Division II Johnson C Smith (0-3) to 69 yards total on its 45 offensive plays. The Golden Bulls rushed 29 times for 22 yards. Trey Samuel started the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Samuel had 27 yards on seven carries. Datron James added a 1-yard plunge in the third quarter. Tyler Scandrett kicked field goals of 39, 31, 32 and 27 yards. South Carolina State tacked on a safety late in the fourth quarter. Saturday's game was the de facto home opener for South Carolina State, which had its Sept. 9 home contest against Charleston Southern postponed due to the threat of Hurricane Irma. - AP College Football
07/31/17 - 2017 MEAC PRESEASON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Darius Leonard, South Carolina State...Leonard continues South Carolina State's strong tradition of defensive play as last season's MEAC Defensive Player of the year honor marked the fourth consecutive season a SC State defender has earned the postseason award. He led the MEAC in tackles last season with 124, 3.5 sacks and two interceptions. The Lake View, S.C. native had 10-plus tackles in seven of SC State's 11 games highlighted by a 19-tackle performance at College Football Playoff National Champion Clemson on Sept. 17. Leonard also tallied 16 tackles at UCF and 14 tackles at Howard. He was named the Sheridan Broadcast Network Sports Mel Blount Defensive Player of the Year, an AFCA All-American and and the BOXTOROW Willie Davis Defensive Player of the Year Award. - MEAC Football

A three-time MEAC Defensive Player of the Week selection, Leonard finished the season with 78 solo tackles (4th in FCS), 14.5 tackles for a loss of 64 yards, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, five pass deflections, four forced fumbles (8th in FCS) and two blocked kicks. Leonard notched a season-high 19 tackles against #3 Clemson on Oct. 15. The Lake View, S.C. native has 281 total tackles in three seasons of play with one remaining. 11/27/16 - Mykal Moody, who switched from wide receiver to quarterback midweek, rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns and passed for another TD to lead South Carolina State to a 28-7 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. Moody, a junior redshirt, threw only three passes - his first of the season - and completed one for a 29-yard score to De'Montrez Burroughs. Moody had touchdown runs of 11, 21 and 12 yards. "We made the decision on Tuesday," head coach Buddy Pough said of Moody's switch. "We wanted to try something different and now we hope to build on it for the future." Darius Leonard led the Bulldogs (5-6, 5-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) with a game-high 12 tackles, nine solo. Akevious Williams threw a 29-yard pass to Jaime Wilson for the lone score for the Wildcats (4-6, 4-4), who managed just 157 yards offense. - AP Sports
10/23/16 - Darius Leonard and Dayshawn Taylor led a stout South Carolina State defense in a 30-3 victory over Delaware State on Saturday for the Bulldogs' third straight win. The Bulldogs (3-3, 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic) gave up only 151 yards offense with Leonard and Taylor accounting for 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. South Carolina State was up 27-0 before the Hornets (0-7, 0-4) picked up their only points on a field goal with 14 seconds left in the first half. Dewann Ford threw to fellow quarterback Adrian Kollock Jr. for a 14-yard score in the first quarter. Dondre Brown ran 3 yards for a TD and Caleb York threw 41 yards to De'Montrez Burroughs for another in the second quarter. Tyler Scandrett kicked three field goals, including a career-long 46-yarder. South Carolina State's Bishop Ford ran for 106 yards on 27 carries, his second 100-yard game this season. - AP Sports
10/15/16 - Darius Leonard ran an interception back 64 yards for a score and picked off another in the fourth quarter to secure South Carolina State's 14-9 win over Howard on Saturday. Leonard gave South Carolina State (2-3, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a 7-0 lead with his first interception with 6:19 left in the second period. Leonard, who finished with 14 tackles, thwarted Howard with his second interception in the fourth when the Bison had driven to SCSU's 31 with 9:28 left. Caleb York hit Mykal Moody on a 5-yard scoring play with 12:41 remaining in the final quarter for the winning touchdown in this defensive struggle. Dakota Labofsky kicked a 24-yard field goal and Jason Collins hit Kyle Anthony on a 6-yard scoring strike to give Howard a 9-0 lead with 7:28 left in the third. 10/19/15 - Chris Pauling and Darius Leonard each returned interceptions for scores and Lynard Jamison had a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown to help South Carolina State beat Howard 49-10 on Saturday. Jamison added eight receptions for 70 yards and another touchdown while Mykal Moody finished with three catches for 107 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown that gave South Carolina State (3-3, 2-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a 21-0 lead with 4:32 left in the first quarter. On the first play from scrimmage, Pauling picked off a pass from Jamie Cunningham and returned it 42 yards for a score. After the teams exchanged punts, Howard (0-6, 0-4) drove to the South Carolina State 34 before a 65-yard pick-6 by Leonard gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Howard had just 217 total yards and is now averaging just 196.3 yards per game. - AP Sports
