11/06/18 - S Obi Melifonwu was signed by the Patriots Tuesday (Nov. 6). He had been waived from reserve/injured by the Raiders Oct. 23. Melifonwu, 24, was originally drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round (56th overall) of the 2017 draft out of Connecticut. The 6-foot-4, 224-pounder began his rookie campaign on injured reserve before being activated to Oakland's 53-man roster on Nov. 4. He appeared in five games with one start and registered six tackles on defense and one on special teams before being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 15. Melifonwu's lone start for the Raiders came on Nov. 19, 2017 against the Patriots in Mexico City. He posted three tackles. He was placed on injured reserve prior to the start of the 2018 season before being released on Oct. 23.

Melifonwu, a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, has been sidelined since early this month and was waived with an injury designation. Melifonwu was dealing with a lower-body injury and reportedly saw a specialist amid concerns that the issue was related to the hip surgery that ended his rookie season. The 6-4, 225-pound Melifonwu has been dogged by injuries during his brief NFL tenure.

Melifonwu, a second-round pick of Oakland in the 2017 NFL Draft, has not practiced since Aug. 6 after he had what head coach Jon Gruden termed "a flare-up" of a lower-body injury. The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Melifonwu will visit a specialist and there is concern that the injury is related to the hip surgery that ended his rookie season.
