05/27/14 - Jamal Marcus, in the mix to start at defensive end for Ohio State this fall, is transferring out of the Buckeyes program. Ohio State confirmed Tuesday that it had reached a mutual decision with Marcus that it would be best for him to transfer. The redshirt junior had academic problems in the spring. A native of Durham, North Carolina, Marcus replaced Noah Spence in the starting lineup at the Orange Bowl against Clemson. Spence was suspended for three games for allegedly using an outlawed stimulant. Marcus had six tackles, including three solo, and knocked down a pass in the bowl game. He was considered a strong contender to start in place of Spence the first two games this fall. - AP Sports
05/27/14 - Backup defensive end Jamal Marcus will transfer from Ohio State, a high-level OSU source told The Dispatch yesterday. Marcus, a redshirt junior, had missed time during spring practice because of academic struggles, an issue that persisted. Marcus was not dismissed from the team, the source said, terming it a mutual decision. It is not known where he will transfer. Marcus, a native of Durham, N.C., began his Ohio State career as a linebacker. After moving to defensive end, he saw limited action. He started for the Buckeyes in the 2014 Orange Bowl against Clemson after Noah Spence was suspended. Marcus was one of the few defensive standouts in the 40-35 loss. He had six tackles, including three solo, and knocked down a pass as he was frequently in the Clemson backfield. With Spence still suspended for the first two games of the 2014 season, Marcus would have been in line to begin the season as a starter. - Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch
