03/06/18 - 2018 NFL Combine Question Marks: Hercules Mata'afa, DE, Washington State...On film, it is tough to find a defensive lineman with a better get-off burst than Mata'afa, who posted 47 tackles for loss the last three seasons. However, NFL teams are concerned about his "fit" at the next level and his athletic testing numbers won't help ease concerns. Mata'afa managed only 31.5 inches in the vertical, 9 feet in the broad jump and 7.24 in the three-cone -- not awful numbers, but not what evaluators were hoping for. - Dane Brugler,
03/03/18 - 2018 NFL Combine, Saturday: One of the more anticipated workouts Sunday will come from Washington State defensive lineman Hercules Mata'afa, who played almost exclusively last season as an interior defensive lineman for the Cougars. But at 6-2 and 254 pounds, his future is on the edges or standing up as a pass rusher. According to Mata'afa, he can play anywhere in the front seven. "I'm a playmaker, man," he said Saturday. "I think I do best with my hand in the dirt, defensive end. But I can play outside linebacker if duty calls. - Dane Brugler,
02/27/18 - 2018 NFL Combine: Athleticism Key for these Prospects: Hercules Mata'afa, DE/OLB, Washington State...One of the biggest wildcard prospects in this class, Mata'afa was dominant as an interior pass rusher last season, but at 250-ish pounds, he will transition to an edge or linebacker position in the NFL. How he tests and performs in drills will be critical to his evaluation. - Dane Brugler,
01/01/18 - Washington State redshirt junior Hercules Mata'afa, who wreaked havoc as an undersized defensive tackle this season, declared Sunday night that he will enter the NFL Draft. Mata'afa (6-2, 252) projects more as a defensive end/outside linebacker/edge rusher in the pros after a season in which he posted 22.5 tackles for loss, including 10.5 sacks. projects Mata'afa as a second-round talent and the second-best junior at outside linebacker. His offseason workouts will help identify where he fits best in the NFL, perhaps as a 4-3 defensive end or a 3-4 outside linebacker. Mata'afa ended his Cougars career with 47 tackles for loss, including 22.5 sacks. - The Sports Xchange
12/11/17 - 2017 ALL-PAC-12 FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL Hercules Mata'afa, RJr., Washington State,...Mata'afa earns his third career All-Pac-12 honor after receiving honorable mention as a freshman and second-team honors as a sophomore and is the first Cougar defensive lineman named to the first team since Mkristo Bruce in 2006. Mata'afa, redshirt-junior from Lahaina, Hawaii led the Pac-12 with 21.5 tackles-for-loss and 9.5 sacks and totaled 43 tackles with two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Mata'afa earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week following the win at Utah after making eight tackles, five for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. - Washington State Football
