01/10/18 - Less than 48 hours after Alabama's dramatic win over Georgia in the national championship game, three players for the Crimson Tide announced their intention to enter the NFL Draft. No player boosted his stock at the end of the season more than Payne, who earned defensive MVP honors in both the national title game as well as the Alabama's semifinal win over Clemson. Payne had an interception against Clemson and registered six tackles in the come-from-behind win over Georgia that secured the school's fifth national title in nine seasons. - The Sports Xchange
01/09/18 - The national championship showdown between Alabama and Georgia drew 28.443 million viewers, making it the second-most watched title game in the four-year-old format of the College Football Playoff. Alabama beat Georgia in overtime , rallying from 13 points down in the second half before winning with a game-ending touchdown pass . Viewership for the all-Southeastern Conference matchup was up 13 percent from last season's Clemson-Alabama rematch from the season before. The first CFP championship game between Oregon and Ohio State after the 2014 season drew nearly 34 million viewers, a record for ESPN. This season's CFP semifinals on Jan. 1 and Monday night's championship game averaged more than 26.2 million viewers, up 21 percent from last year. The New Year's Six bowls and championship game drew an average of 17 million viewers, the most in four years of the format. - AP College Football
01/09/18 - Alabama defensive lineman Da'Ron Payne was defensive player of the game. Payne had six tackles and was part of an Alabama defensive front that shut down Georgia's running game in the second half. Payne also intercepted a tipped pass, helping to set up a field goal. - AP College Football
01/04/18 - 2017 ASSOCIATED PRESS ALL-BOWL TEAM: All-Purpose: Da'Ron Payne, Alabama (Sugar): This 308-pound defensive lineman had a 21-yard interception return in the third quarter to put Alabama in Clemson territory and capped the Crimson Tide's next series with a 1-yard touchdown catch, where he showed off a ballerina's footwork. - AP College Football
01/02/18 - Nose guard Da'Ron Payne and linebacker Mack Wilson intercepted passes on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter, keying a ferocious second-half defensive assault that produced a pair of touchdowns in a 13-second span to power No. 4 Alabama to a 24-6 victory over No. 1 Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal on Monday night in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Alabama (12-1) will play Southeastern Conference East rival Georgia (13-1) for the College Football National Championship on Jan. 8 in Atlanta. The two SEC foes have not played each other since 2015, when the Crimson Tide routed Georgia 38-10.

Clemson trailed just 10-6 and had moved to a second-and-2 at the Alabama 35 in the third quarter when the Alabama defense, healthy again after a month of rest, turned the tide. Linebacker Anfernee Jennings came off the edge to hit Kelly Bryant as the quarterback released a pass, and Payne gathered in the weakened throw for the interception, returning it 21 yards. Payne was taken down on an illegal horse-collar tackle by tackle Tremayne Anchrum, setting up Alabama at the Clemson 27. The 6-foot-2, 308-pound Payne followed up his game-turning play by lining up as an H-back, going in motion to the right and catching a wide-open, 1-yard touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone from quarterback Jalen Hurts, putting Alabama up 17-6. - The Sports Xchange
