12/12/18 - (RB) - Darrell Henderson, Jr, 5-09, 200
RB Darrell Henderson, a unanimous All-American, announced Wednesday he will enter the NFL Draft. The junior, while perhaps lacking an elite package of size and breakaway speed, possesses excellent vision, subtle shifts and has an effective stiff-arm to weave his way through defenses. Memphis hasn't had a back this talented since the Pittsburgh Steelers made DeAngelo Williams the 27th overall pick in 2006.

11/28/18 - (RB) - Darrell Henderson, Jr, 5-09, 200
Memphis' Darrell Henderson has bigger goals to accomplish, so he doesn't have time to waste celebrating his American Athletic Conference record or his status as the nation's second-leading rusher. Henderson wants to win an AAC championship. Memphis (8-4) carries a four-game winning streak into Saturday's AAC championship game against No. 7 Central Florida (11-0, No. 8 College Football Playoff ). The Knights have won 24 straight games over the last two years but will be playing this week without injured star quarterback McKenzie Milton. The Tigers' opportunity to claim a conference title comes one week after Henderson set the AAC's single-season rushing record.

"It felt good, but I had to flush that because we've got a (chance at a) bigger accomplishment this week," Henderson said. "We've got to go play for the conference championship, so I'm just focused on my team right now. This championship is more important right now." This game represents a second chance for Henderson, whose potential go-ahead 32-yard touchdown run was nullified by a holding penalty in the fourth quarter of a 31-30 loss to UCF last month. Even without that touchdown, Henderson still rushed for 199 yards in that game. "We've just got to play relentless and make sure we finish this game," Henderson said. "We just had too many turnovers and too many mistakes (last time)." Henderson is the biggest reason why Memphis is back in the conference championship game one year after losing quarterback Riley Ferguson and Chicago Bears rookie receiver Anthony Miller, who had formed one of the nation's most dynamic passing combinations. - AP College Football

11/24/18 - (RB) - Darrell Henderson, Jr, 5-09, 200
Junior Darrell Henderson rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns - setting a conference rushing record - and Memphis rallied past Houston 52-31 on Friday to set up a rematch of last season's American Athletic Conference championship game with No. 8 UCF. Henderson set the single-season rushing record, passing the previous mark of 1,629 by Tulsa's James Flanders in 2016. Memphis (8-4, 5-3) trailed Houston 21-17 at halftime, but rushed for five touchdowns in the second half and scored 21 unanswered points to close it out. The Tigers rushed for 401 yards, with 277 in the second half after Houston star DT Ed Oliver left the game with what coach Major Applewhite said after the game was a knee injury.

Sam Craft opened the second-half scoring with a 28-yard run, Tony Pollard went in from 6 yards out, Patrick Taylor Jr. had a short TD run and Henderson capped it with a 63-yard sprint and a short plunge to help the Tigers pull away. Memphis lost to UCF 62-55 in double overtime in the title game last year and fell 31-30 to UCF earlier this season. Gleson Sprewell made two interceptions for Houston (8-4, 5-3), returning one 63 yards to cap the first-half scoring. The Cougars have scored 30-plus points in 12 straight games, ranking second among FBS active teams behind UCF with 23. Oliver was seen getting emotional on the sideline in the second half. - AP College Football

11/17/18 - (TE) - Joey Magnifico, rJr, 6-3, 235
Patrick Taylor Jr., ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns and Memphis beat SMU 28-18 on Friday night. Brady White's 16-yard touchdown pass to Joey Magnifico with 9:26 before halftime gave Memphis a 7-3 lead it never surrendered. Taylor's 9-yard run after intermission extended the lead to 14-5. Ben Hicks threw a 31-yard score to James Proche just before the end of the third and SMU was with two but couldn't get closer. White threw a 9-yard score to Joey Magnifico to start the fourth and Taylor added a 2-yard TD run and the lead was 16. Hicks threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns - both to Proche. Proche finished with 12 catches for 134 yards. Bowl-eligible Memphis (7-4, 4-3 American Athletic Conference) now holds an 8-3 advantage in its series with the Mustangs (5-6, 4-3) and has won five straight against SMU since 2014. - AP College Football

03/03/18 - (DT) - Jared Gentry, Sr, 6-2, 325
Memphis defensive tackle Jared Gentry was kicked off the team Friday following a drug-related arrest earlier in the week, according to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal. Gentry, who was expected to be an important piece of the team's defense this year, was arrested Wednesday on drug charges. Gentry was dismissed two days later after an investigation by the school. According to Shelby County (Tenn.) court records, Gentry was arrested on felony possession of marijuana with the intent to manufacture, deliver and sell. The 20-year-old was additionally charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arraigned in county criminal court Friday and bond was set at $3,000. An athletics department spokesperson at Memphis told the Commercial-Appeal that Gentry was dismissed from the team for violating team rules and suspended from the campus during its investigation.

"Jared Gentry has been dismissed from the University of Memphis football team for a violation of team rules," the Memphis athletics department wrote in a statement. "Additionally, Gentry has been placed on interim suspension from campus for violations of the UofM Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities while this matter is reviewed by the Office of Student Accountability, Outreach and Support. No additional comments will be made while the investigation is ongoing." Police officers reportedly learned that Gentry kept drugs in his campus apartment and, following a search, found a mason jar containing two bags of marijuana weighing 29.8 grams. Officers also found small scales and plastic bags. - The Sports Xchange
