When Texas Tech gives up a big pass play this coming season, inexperience in the secondary won't be a reason. The Red Raiders' two-deep has eight defensive backs with 154 starts among them in major-college football, including five with at least 20. That's not to say all is rosy: Tech ranked 119th in the FBS in pass defense during a 7-6 season last year, but the Red Raiders also had three of the top six in the Big 12 in passes defended and two of the three return. When preseason practice starts next month, they'll open with Rayshad Williams at boundary cornerback, Reggie Pearson at boundary safety, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at free safety, Marquis Waters at nickel and Adrian Frye at field corner.

The corners rotation is a small circle. Malik Dunlap is the top backup for both Williams and Frye, Tech coach Joey McGuire said in late June. Williams often was assigned to the opponent's top receiver last season. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior from Memphis, Tennessee started full-time and ended the year with 38 tackles and 10 pass breakups. "One of the big things I wanted him to be was more physical in tackling," McGuire said, "and I thought he really came on in the spring. "Adrian out of that group is the one that's the most consistent. He's old and has played football, has a good head on his shoulders. He'll be part of our leadership committee. He's the one that's most consistent on a daily basis of who he is." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
