  Draft Scout by Conference

No one quite knew how good Richie Grant would be in his first year as a full-time starter for the UCF Knights. But throughout the 2018 season, he put the nation - and especially opposing quarterbacks - on notice. The redshirt junior safety became one of college football's best ballhawks, tying for third in the nation with six interceptions. Now a lot of people know how good Grant is; he has been placed on preseason national-watch lists for awards that honor either the sport's best defensive back, best defensive player or best overall player. UCF's own quarterbacks know that they also need to track Grant and his No. 27 jersey in practice, similar to how perhaps the greatest QB of all time would keep his eyes planted on a Hall of Fame safety. "I saw that Tom Brady had his play handbook and it said ‘Find 20' on every play for when he played [former Baltimore Ravens star] Ed Reed,” UCF quarterback Brandon Wimbush said.

"That's not something we do here, but when you're out there at the quarterback position, you have to seek out where 27 is." As good as his game already is, Grant knows he is not a finished product. Last year's class of NFL Draft-eligible safeties was a relatively weak one and Grant was in a good position to capitalize on his breakout 2018 campaign. He thought about entering the draft, but he decided to stay at UCF. "I knew I wasn't ready to take that leap," he said. - Orlando Sentinel
