  10/23/20 - WR DeVonta SmithSr/2021, Alabama

If we're talking math, 50% chances aren't always worth taking on the football field. Throw it up and see what happens? Nah. Alabama receivers aren't thinking about a coin toss when Mac Jones fires one deep through four games. DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle and John Metchie are the main targets in those moments with Smith winning his share of jump balls. "We expect him to make those type of plays," Waddle said. "We don't consider them 50-50 balls when Smitty's the one after it." Smith caught back-of-the-end zone touchdowns in two of the last three weeks on plays that required equal parts concentration, footwork and strength. Both were well defended, he just played it better.

Waddle is known for his ability to climb the ladder and snag some tough passes, too. He started the year with a jump ball at Missouri the led to an early touchdown. What's his take on an acceptable percentage if 50-50 isn't right? "Well for one, our position coach, if you touch it when it's thrown to you, we expect you to catch it," Waddle said. "That's just our mentality in that room. Smitty's just one of the best at it, if not the best, at those types of balls." His fourth-quarter dagger on a 13-yard pass from Jones was just the latest example of connecting the high-point catch with careful footwork. Smith's 38 catches rank second in the SEC behind only Ole Miss' Elijah Moore' 42. He had 13 catches at Ole Miss and 11 against Georgia including the nifty fourth-quarter touchdown. - Birmingham News
