The 2020 season has started for Kentucky football, but the Wildcats are still waiting to learn if highly touted Auburn quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood can play this year. Gatewood, a former top-50 recruit, transferred to UK in January. Kentucky coach Mark Stoops has indicated the NCAA has cleared Gatewood to play this season, but he still needs an additional waiver from the SEC to avoid sitting this season because he is transferring from another SEC program. A rule change could be coming soon to let Gatewood play this season, Stoops said Monday. "We are trying to get the (SEC) rule changed," Stoops said. "That's above the head coaches' decision. It doesn't matter what we think. We need to talk to our presidents, and our presidents are voting on that. It's my understanding that we'll have a decision relatively quickly on that." Gatewood is not the only player in limbo due to the SEC rule. Tennessee offensive lineman Cade Mays and Ole Miss defensive back Otis Reese are also hoping to play for SEC teams this season after transferring from league foe Georgia. - Courier Journal
