 Update

01/02/18 - 2017 CONFERENCE USA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): RB - Ito Smith, Sr., Southern Miss,...Smith made the league's second-team each of the previous two years, and will close out his Golden Eagle career in the bowl game as one of the program's all-time greats. He needs two rushing touchdowns to match the school's career record, and in the regular-season finale win at Marshall, he became the all-time leader in all-purpose yards. Smith had seven, 100-yard rushing games, including 150-plus in each of the final three games.

 Overview

With all due respect to Saquon Barkley and the other exceptional talents in this year's running back class, Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson would take his guy over any of them.

"I'm partial because I coach at Southern Miss, but to me, he's the best back in the country," Hopson said prior to the Golden Eagles taking on Florida State in the Independence Bowl. "He's a guy that just comes to work every day and plays hard. He's got that special quality." Before one just casts off Hopson's lofty praise as simply a by-product of familiarity or loyalty, consider Smith's production over the past four seasons.

Smith is one of just 10 players in NCAA history to have at least 4,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving during his career, gaining 4,536 yards on the ground and 1,446 through the air with 49 combined touchdowns, including 42 as a rusher. His 6,532 all-purpose yards are the most in school history and he ran for at least 100 yards 23 times during his career. Of course, it is easy to rack up production when a back possesses Smith's big play ability, scoring touchdowns on runs of 89, 80 and 65 yards, as well as an 84-yard touchdown reception in 2017, alone. The four touchdowns of 65 yards or more are tied for the most in the nation this season.

Smith capped his career with 92 yards on just 16 carries (a 5.8 yard per carry average), as well as four catches for another 26 yards in the 42-13 bowl game loss to Florida State.

BACKGROUND
Three star prospect by 247sports.com ... Two star recruit according to Rivals.com and Scout.com ... Lettered at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School ... Mobile Press-Register's Coastal Alabama Offensive Player of the Year (2013) ... Named First Team All-State, All-Area and All-Region ... Dubbed Chricton Optimist Club Player of the Week three times ... As a senior, tallied 255 carries for 1,803 and 24 rushing touchdowns ... Also had 27 receptions for 383 yards (14.19 average) and five receiving touchdowns as a senior ... Led McGill-Toolen Catholic High School to the Class 6A semifinals.

 Analysis

  STRENGTHS
Possesses a compact, athletic frame with good upper and lower body definition. Attacks the line of scrimmage, showing an explosive burst to and through the hole. Sets up defenders with shimmies and shakes to leave them off-balance, showing the jets to explode in either direction as well as the breakaway speed to turn a small crease into a big gain. Stronger than he looks, lowering his shoulder on contact and keeping his legs driving. Reliable receiver out of the backfield, utilizing his quickness to consistently generate separation and showing body control and soft hands to pluck the ball and corral it in one smooth movement. Doesn't shy from contact in blitz pick-up, dropping his pads and butt to anchor better than his marginal build would suggest and shows excellent timing and commitment to cut-blocks, including when blocking downfield for teammates. Terrific durability, missing just one game (Appalachian State, 2014) in four seasons. -- Rob Rang 1/20/2018

WEAKNESSES
Comes with obvious size concerns and lacks ideal power to break tackles, replying upon his quickness to avoid defenders. A bit impatient, at times, running into the backs of his blockers. Possesses good but not elite balance, swinging his arms to change directions quickly and leaving the ball exposed when doing so. Legitimate questions as to how much gas is left in the tank after recording 960 combined rushes and receptions at Southern Miss, including 820 carries... - Rob Rang 1/20/2018

COMPARES TO: Dion Lewis, Patriots - At 5-08, 195 pounds, Lewis is inch shorter than Smith with a similar blend of shiftiness and soft hands to be an ideal weapon in New England's up-tempo, shotgun-based attack.

IN OUR VIEW: The popular narrative with so-called undersized backs like Smith is that they will not hold up to NFL punishment. Smith's production, durability and toughness provide strong counters to this idea, however, serving as Southern Mississippi's unquestioned lead dog over his career, including earning a career-high 41 touches (including 36 rushes for 173 yards) in the Golden Eagles' 2016 season-opening upset of Kentucky. At worst, Smith is a change-of-pace back in the NFL with the grit and all-purpose skills to handle a heavier workload if needed.

 2017 Season

1/02/18 - 2017 CONFERENCE USA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): RB - Ito Smith, Sr., Southern Miss,...Smith made the league's second-team each of the previous two years, and will close out his Golden Eagle career in the bowl game as one of the program's all-time greats. He needs two rushing touchdowns to match the school's career record, and in the regular-season finale win at Marshall, he became the all-time leader in all-purpose yards. Smith had seven, 100-yard rushing games, including 150-plus in each of the final three games.

12/27/17 - Most of the college football world might not realize just how good Southern Miss running back Ito Smith has been during his four-year career. With that in mind, Southern Miss coach Jay Hopson took a little time before the Independence Bowl to give his star player a plug. "I'm partial because I coach at Southern Miss, but to me, he's the best back in the country," Hopson said. "He's a guy that just comes to work every day and plays hard. He's got that special quality." The raw numbers certainly back up Hopson's high praise.
The 5-foot-9, 195-pound Smith is one of just 10 players in NCAA history to have at least 4,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving during his career. With one game remaining against Florida State on Wednesday, Smith has gained 4,446 yards on the ground and 1,420 through the air. His 6,344 all-purpose yards are the most in school history and he has run for at least 100 yards 23 times during his career. Smith has been a threat to score from anywhere on the field this season. He's run for touchdowns that went for 89, 80 and 65 yards. He also caught a pass that turned into an 84-yard touchdown. The four touchdowns of 65 yards or more are tied for the most in the nation this season.

11/11/17 - Kwadra Griggs completed 22 of 31 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns and Ito Smith ran for 150 and two scores to propel Southern Mississippi to a 43-34 victory over Rice on Saturday. Smith now has 1,018 yards rushing this season and he also became the 10th player in FBS history to top 4,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a career. The win makes the Golden Eagles (6-4, 4-2 Conference USA) bowl eligible for a third straight season. Southern Miss used two Parker Shaunfield field goals and a 51-yard scoring strike from Griggs to Tim Jones to take a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter. But Rice (1-9, 1-5) continually fought back behind Nashon Ellerbe, who had 153 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Twice Ellerbe had the Owls within two points on TD runs of 17 and 1 yards, but Southern Miss answered with Griggs' 47-yard TD strike to Robertson and Smith's 18-yard TD run with 2:55 to play preserving the win.

10/15/17 - Ito Smith ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns as Southern Miss captured its second straight Homecoming and recorded its first Conference-USA shutout since 2001, blanking Texas-El Paso 24-0 Saturday. But it was the Eagles' defense that shone brightest. Southern Miss (4-2, 2-1) held the Miners to just 147 total yards, including just 17 net yards on the ground. Keon Howard completed 16 of his 27 pass attempts for 221 yards and a touchdown, but he was picked off twice by UTEP (0-7, 0-3). Howard found Jaylond Adams with a 52-yard scoring pass midway through the first quarter to get the Eagles on the board and Smith found the end zone just before halftime to make it 14-0. Smith scored from 20-yards out in the fourth quarter to make it 21-0 and Parker Shaunfield kicked a 38-yard field goal late to account for the game's scoring.ll

10/09/17 - OCT 9 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Southern Miss senior RB Ito Smith posted his third-straight 100-yard rushing game in the Golden Eagles' 31-29 win at UTSA to give him 19 for his career, finishing with 178 yards on 17 carries and a 10.5 per rush average. He helped break open the game with an 89-yard scoring run up the middle in the third quarter, which ranks as the longest rushing touchdown from scrimmage in school history. With Saturday's performance, Smith moved into second place all-time in the school's career rushing yards mark and he currently has 3,736 for his career. He added two catches for 12 yards. Smith has scored in each of his last four games and has 499 rushing yards over that span. - Conference USA Football
