  01/04/23 - CB *Eli RicksJr/2023, Alabama, 6-2, 190 (DS#23 CB) + More +

Eli Ricks' time at Alabama will end after one season of high expectations for the LSU transfer that largely went unmet. Ricks declared for the NFL draft Tuesday, making the announcement on Instagram one day after three Tide juniors declared at a news conference and fellow junior Brian Branch followed later Monday. For Ricks, the decision was not nearly as clear-cut as Bryce Young or Will Anderson, or even his teammate in the secondary, Branch. Ricks played in 10 games this season but made only five starts, including one at Ole Miss that ended when he suffered a concussion on the game's first play.

Ricks finished the season with four pass break-ups, one tackle for a loss and no interceptions. But NFL teams could still be attracted to Ricks' length at 6-foot-2 and his freshman season tape in 2020 that earned the former five-star recruit a spot on the Associated Press' third-team All-America that year. Ricks, a California native who played at IMG Academy in Florida, was the No. 14 overall prospect in the 2020 class by 247 Sports' composite. He lived up to that status as a FWAA freshman All-American but a shoulder injury derailed his second season in Baton Rouge. - Birmingham News

  11/02/22 - CB *Eli RicksJr/2023, Alabama, 6-2, 190 (DS#23 CB) + More +

For a while, Eli Ricks wasn't getting much playing time for Alabama football. Sure, he was part of the cornerback rotation to start the season. But outside of blowout wins over Utah State, Louisiana-Monroe and Vanderbilt, Ricks hadn't seen much playing time at all: three defensive snaps against Arkansas, to be exact. Then he got his chance with a starting spot against Mississippi State. Whether he will be the starter for the rest of the season remains to be seen, but he certainly looked the part against the Bulldogs.

Before transferring to the Crimson Tide last offseason, Ricks was with the Tigers for two seasons, playing in 14 games. His sophomore year was not a full season, though, because of an injury. Still, he showed plenty of potential in his freshman season in 2020, earning freshman All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America. - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama football continues to have injuries pop up at cornerback as it tries to determine who will start at the position. Eli Ricks is the latest Crimson Tide cornerback to miss time. The LSU transfer has got "a little bit of a back problem," Alabama coach Nick Saban said Wednesday. Ricks hasn't been able to practice since the scrimmage on Saturday. "I don't think it's anything that's going to keep him out for a long time," Saban said. Khyree Jackson, another cornerback in contention for one of the starting spots, missed the scrimmage as he was dealing with a groin injury. "I was not disappointed in the way (Ricks) played in the scrimmage," Saban said. "I think there's a lot of competition at that position. I can't tell you who would be the starting corners at this point." - Montgomery Advertiser

LSU transfer Eli Ricks was a five-star recruit and freshman All-American in Baton Rouge before opting for Tuscaloosa for Year 3. It's been a challenge and Saban said the domino effect began with the shoulder injury that ended his sophomore season in October. "I think that Eli sort of with the injuries that he had and the time that he was off," Saban said Sunday, "it was really a more difficult transition for him physically, emotionally, mentally, to come from where he was, to where he needs to get to be a kind of player that he wants to be." Ricks wasn't in a full contact jersey for the A-Day Game in April when he was playing with the second-team defense. Sophomore Kool-Aid McKinstry and senior Khyree Jackson were the starters with the first-team defense in a competition that has carried over into August. As the No. 14 overall player in the 247Sports composite ranking of the 2020 class, Ricks was an instant star at LSU. He was a freshman All-American while intercepting four passes in his 14 total games with the Tigers.

A torn labrum ended his second season in mid-October after re-injuring the same shoulder that required surgery the previous offseason, The Advocate reported. "I think that sometimes when you go through all those things, it can affect your confidence a little bit because you get frustrated and struggle because you're not used to being in the kind of condition that you once were," Saban said of Ricks. "No fault of his, but he had some difficult circumstances to overcome with the injuries and so forth. But he is making very, very good progress physically and on the field in terms of grasping the system and having a better understanding of what's required of him to be a good player." Defensive coordinator Pete Golding said there were five cornerbacks competing for two starting spots with Ricks definitely in that mix. - Birmingham News

In breaking down his team Tuesday at SEC media days in Atlanta, Nick Saban isolated cornerback as a particular area of potential concern on the defense. "Defensively I think we've got seven starters back," Saban said of a group that returned several players, including safety Jordan Battle and linebacker Henry To'o To'o, for their senior seasons. "Again, the biggest challenge is how do we replace the corners that we lost, because corner is probably the one position that puts the greatest restriction on what you can do on defense. That's going to be a significant challenge for us, as well." Expectations might be highest for Ricks, who was a third-team Associated Press All-America pick as a freshman at LSU in 2020 before a shoulder injury prematurely ended his 2021 season. Saban noted at the beginning of Alabama spring practice how the shoulder injury affected Ricks' physical development and how he needed to gain back weight.

But by the spring game in mid-April, Ricks was part of the second team behind McKinstry and Jackson, who started the game with the first-team defense. Saban said after the game that Ricks was part of a three-way competition for a starting job but he needed to continue to learn the system, something Battle acknowledged Tuesday at media days. "He's fits in very well. Week in, week out, we can tell -- I mean, when he first got there, he had a problem with comfortability because the defense and the playbook but since he's been going up and seeing Coach T-Rob [Travaris Robinson], he's acclimated very quickly," Battle said. Saban's lone comments about Ricks at Tuesday's session were more pointed. "Eli Ricks is a guy that has started in this league," Saban said. "He has to, sort of, prove that he has a good understanding of what we want him to do, how we want him to do it and why it's important that way." - Birmingham News

A court in Mississippi has dismissed a marijuana charge against Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks. Ricks, a junior who transferred from LSU, was arrested May 1 by the Mississippi Highway Patrol and charged with possession of marijuana, not having insurance and speeding. A hearing in his case was scheduled for Thursday morning in Jones County Justice Court. A clerk for the court said Thursday afternoon that Ricks' possession of marijuana charge was dismissed and, through his attorney, Ricks pled guilty to the speeding ticket and received a fine.

A police report obtained by AL.com after Ricks' arrest showed he was stopped at 4:20 p.m. CT while traveling southbound on Interstate 59 near Laurel. Police noted Ricks was traveling 91 m.p.h. and was in possession of one gram of marijuana. Ricks was a five-star recruit from California in 2020 who was a third-team Associated Press All-America selection as a freshman. He underwent shoulder surgery midway through his sophomore season at LSU and announced in December he would transfer to Alabama. - Birmingham News

After Alabama's 2022 draft class was its smallest in six years, its 2023 class has a chance to be the school's largest ever. Bryce Young and Will Anderson are the projected headliners but almost every probable starter on each side of the ball is eligible to leave for the NFL next offseason. Ricks will be a popular top-15 pick because of his 6-foot-2 length, status as a five-star recruit and his third-team All-America freshman season with LSU in 2020. But he played Alabama's spring game with the second-team defense and still needs to beat one of two incumbent starters in Kool-Aid McKinstry or Khyree Jackson for a job. Nick Saban noted there has been a learning curve for Ricks in learning Alabama's system and, although it is unlikely to have any significant legal consequences, Ricks' arrest earlier this week is not the sort of attention the junior wants as he settles into Alabama's program. - Birmingham News

Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks pleaded not guilty Monday to a misdemeanor marijuana charge following a traffic stop. Ricks was pulled over on Interstate 59 near Laurel on Sunday after police clocked his 2018 Mercedes traveling 91 mph in a 70 mph zone, the Laurel Leader-Call reported, citing Mississippi Highway Patrol and Jones County Justice Court records. The newspaper reported that police found marijuana in his car and brought him to jail. He was released Monday and is scheduled to appear again in court June 23. Ricks was charged with a first offense of possession of marijuana, which would result in a fine of $100 to $250 under Mississippi law if less than 30 grams. He was also cited for speeding and not having insurance. - Birmingham News

Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks was arrested in Mississippi on charges of speeding, not having insurance and a first offense possession of marijuana. The Jones County Sheriff's Department's online records show that Ricks was booked at 5:14 p.m. Sunday. The bond was listed as $0. Alabama coach Nick Saban was not immediately available for comment on the arrest. Ricks is battling for a starting spot in Alabama's secondary after transferring from LSU. He was a five-star recruit who earned third-team Associated Press All-America honors as an LSU freshman.

Ricks' sophomore season was cut short with a shoulder injury. He had surgery for a torn labrum last October. Ricks went through spring practice with the Crimson Tide. He is in competition for a starting job that also included Kool-Aid McKinstry and Khyree Jackson. Saban said Ricks' main challenge was learning a new system. "But he's a very conscientious guy and works hard at it," the coach said after Alabama's spring game. "Takes coaching well, wants to please." - AP College Football

Hours after adding four high schoolers to the class of 2022 on Wednesday, Alabama wasn't done. Former five-star cornerback Eli Ricks confirmed his transfer to the Crimson Tide on Twitter. The former Louisiana State-standout started as a freshman and was the only true freshman named to the AP Al-America Team in 2020 (third-team). "I never visited Bama out of high school but my senior year when I was at IMG, I talked to coach Saban almost every day," Ricks told 247Sports. "I was already locked in with LSU at the time but he's a great coach for sure. My family knows Bryce (Young) and his family really well and my parents have been talking with Craig (father) a lot about what it's like there." Alabama's other defensive backs in the class of 2022 include four-stars Earl Little Jr., Tre'Quon Fegans, Antonio Kite and three-star Jake Pope. Ricks totaled four interceptions at LSU, with two being returned for touchdowns. - Birmingham News

LSU starting cornerback Eli Ricks has decided to have season-ending surgery to repair an injury that has nagged him for much of the season, coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday. The injury leaves LSU without its top two cornerbacks, with former All-America defensive back Derrick Stingley also sidelined indefinitely. "He kept on playing with it, and it kept on recurring. So he and his family decided they were going to get operated on." The injury comes shortly after the Tigers, who host No. 20 Florida on Saturday, learned that they also would have to play the rest of their 2021 campaign without a top offensive player, receiver Kayshon Boutte, who had a season-ending ankle injury at Kentucky last weekend. "It does make it tough," Orgeron conceded on a weekly Southeastern Conference-hosted conference call with the league's coaches on Wednesday. "Somebody's got to rise up to the occasion. We've lost several players, especially starters on defense. We've got some young guys that have to step up." Without Ricks, who had one interception this season, LSU plans to move Cordale Flott to cornerback and freshman Sage Ryan to the nickel slot in five- or six- defensive back formations, Orgeron said. - AP College Football

Star cornerback Eli Ricks will most likely most of spring football practice due to an injury, LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Tuesday, although the returning starter may return near the end of spring. The 6-foot-2, 196-pound sophomore was one of the few bright spots in a porous secondary during the 2020 season. Ricks' four interceptions tied for eighth nationally, and he returned two for touchdowns. He was named third-team All-America by the Associated Press, plus a selection on the All-Southeastern Conference freshman team. Orgeron didn't reveal the details of Ricks' injury, but he did say "he may come back toward the end of the spring. Ricks was scheduled to miss spring football last season after offseason surgery on a torn labrum, although spring practices were eventually canceled due to the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. - Baton Rouge Advocate
