Mase Funa was not loving it in 2021. The Oregon Ducks strong-side linebacker had 28 tackles with one for loss, one fumble recovery and pass breakup in 12 games last season. It was a career-low in disruption in the backfield for Funa, who had 8.5 tackles for loss with four sacks as a true freshman in a backup role in 2019 and 31 tackles with 3.5 for loss over seven games in 2020. Foot and leg injuries played a role in his decline in production, but so too did his weight. At 245 pounds as a top 100 recrui t in the class of 2019 and 260 pounds as a freshman, Funa was playing at a much higher weight than the 265 he was listed at last season.Not surprisingly, his regular dinner order at McDonald's - two McDoubles, two McChickens, 20 chicken nuggets, l arge fries, large shake and large soda - packed on pounds. "That's pretty much why I was so big the last few years," Funa said. "I put down food. I'm Tongan, I got to eat." Funa cut down on fast food - way down. He said he trimmed down to between 235-240 pounds and that was too lean to still be effective on the edge. Now at 255 pounds, the fourth-year junior feels he's in the best shape of his career and poised to get back to being a disruptive force for the No. 11 Ducks this season. "Me and Mase have b een in the same room for this is going on three years now," edge rusher Bradyn Swinson said. "Seeing Mase be from 290 all the way to 280 to see how his body transformed now, this is the best I've ever seen Mase's body. I'm really excited to see what Mase do because he's like a shape-shifter; one minute he can be 250, next minute he's 270 and next minute he's 280. It's amazing. Oregon Ducks football players are the latest to band together to form a collective that will pool name, image and likeness compensation related to an online community. The Eugene NIL Club launched Wednesday via YOKE, the same outlet that gained early ado ption last year by college athletes looking to earn NIL compensation by playing fans in video games via its platform, with the goal of supporting at least 75 players. Donors to the collective can give any amount starting at $5 per month to participate in message boards and chat rooms, digital events with players and to watch player-generated content related to games and practices. For at least $25 per month, a member will receive a Justin Herbert Oregon jersey and for at least $100 per month a donor wil l be invited to a steak dinner with players this fall.By midnight Wednesday, 182 members had pledged over $4,600 towards the club's monthly goal of $50,000. By comparison, the University of Pittsburgh launched the Steel City NIL Club on Wednesday and raised over $8,200 via 340 members. YOKE says it has an 18% "platform fee" associated with running the various team-related collectives, which also include similar operations at Arkansas, Auburn, Kansas State and Michigan State, among others. - The O regonian

One of Oregon's less heralded defenders, Masa Funa returns at strong-side linebacker for the Ducks. He's not as flashy of an edge defender as a situational pass rusher, but Funa sets the edge well in the run game and Oregon's issues there were evident wh en he missed some time last season. Jake Shipley is capable of playing defensive end or at SLB, as can Treven Ma'ae, and Jaden Navarrette could see time on either edge of the defense.Funa had 28 tackles with one for loss and a fumble recovery in 1 2 games last season. That was a down tick in his production from just seven games in 2020 and he still had more tackles than Brandon Dorlus or Bradyn Swinson. As Oregon's strong-side linebacker, Mase Funa's job is to set the edge of the defense, a task made difficult by opposing offensive tackles and tight ends. As the field-side edge defender, Funa is responsible for cutting down what can be a vast amount of grass for the opposing offense to utilize. "It's a huge role with all that space with the offense has to work on with the field," Funa said. "I try to make it easier on everybody else on the defense to try to set the edge so the running back or the quart erback doesn't have too much space to work with when it comes to running the ball." It's a responsibility Funa has done well in his first two seasons with the Ducks, with 31 tackles including 3.5 for loss in seven games last season.He was even mor e disruptive as a freshman, with 8.5 tackles for loss with four sacks, and with a full season and different defensive scheme under Tim DeRuyter, Funa could see more opportunities to get into the backfield against the run as well as the pass. "He's always been a great striker and it's showing up really well," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "He sets edges like very few people do; he can get hands on a tight end, he can take on double teams with tackles and tight ends or tight ends and wings. Set edges , turn the run back and he's also slippery in the pass game as well. Got a great power rush, he's really developed his speed and explosiveness." - The Oregonian

The schematic changes coming to Oregon's defense are less pronounced at the strong-side linebacker spot, where Mase Funa returns. The Sam linebacker plays on the boundary side in Tim DeRuyter's defense and is similar to the Stud end in Andy Avalos' syste m. There are some differences though. "I would say it would be more of the edge more so like 9 (techniques)," Funa said. "I feel like we're playing more of a true outside linebacker position with More Coverages, more drops, while also keeping our edge ru sh and playing inside on the 6 and (one spring practice) they also had us running in through the 3 tech."Funa is a multi-year starter and gets somewhat overlooked compared to Kayvon Thibodeaux, Noah Sewell or Isaac Slade-Matautia but is in their s ame caliber of importance to the Ducks defense. Funa is one of Oregon's players who actually was more productive in the short 2020 season, with 31 tackles, than he was in 2019 (26) despite there being half as many games. That's due in large part to the i ncreased number of reps and portion of snaps for Funa, who should be in for just as big a role this fall. Bryson Young had a breakout senior season at the Stud position, which is always productive in Avalos' defense. Mase Funa is the clear favorite to take over as starter and Isaac Townsend and Treven Ma'ae are both coming off redshirt seasons but spent time with the second and third-team defenses, respectively, during the spring. Most of Funa's disruptive plays came against weaker nonconference play, but that has more to do with Young's ascent into a dominant force than anything. With more reps should come more explosive and disruptive plays from Funa, who will get to face a comparatively weaker mix of offensive tackles due to player graduations and opt outs. - The Oregonian
