Zac Etheridge was excited to be retained by Freeze back in December after the Tigers' new coach took over the program, but the real music to his ears came once Pritchett and James informed him they planned to play one more season at Auburn. With both of the Tigers' starting corners locked in for 2023, it meant Etheridge's defensive backs room wasn't going to lose any pieces from last season, save for the midseason transfer of reserve cornerback A.D. Diamond (who wound up at UAB). Etheridge described that turn of events as a new feeling to him as a coach; it's difficult to maintain the same personnel from year to year, particularly nowadays with the transfer portal and one-time transfer opportunity, but to do so when you also have a pair of potential NFL players in the room makes it even more noteworthy.

James made a name for himself in his first SEC season after transferring to Auburn from Oregon last year. The 5-foot-1, 174-pounder had 38 tackles, with 25 solo stops and one tackle for a loss, along with an interception that he returned for a touchdown against Western Kentucky. He also tied for the team lead with eight pass breakups while earning second-team All-SEC honors from the AP and the conference's coaches. Pritchett, who took over as Auburn's top corner last season - starting all 12 games - while following in the footsteps of Roger McCreary, finished the year with a career-high 37 tackles, including 4.5 for a loss, and eight pass breakups. - Birmingham News

Auburn's defense will return both of its top cornerbacks next season. Nehemiah Pritchett, who started all 12 games at corner for Auburn in 2022, will officially return to the Plains for one more season, the program announced Monday. Pritchett was a senior this past season but still had a year of eligibility remaining, thanks to the NCAA's additional year granted to athletes during the pandemic. The news of Pritchett's return comes two days after fellow starting corner D.J. James announced his decision to forego the NFL Draft and return to the Plains for another year. Both Pritchett and James received invites to the Senior Bowl in November.

Pritchett, a native of Jackson, has appeared in 42 games over the last four seasons for the Tigers and has not missed a game over the last three seasons. During that stretch, the 6-foot-1, 182-pounder has made 31 starts in Auburn's secondary. A former three-star recruit, Pritchett has 93 career tackles, with 4.5 for a loss and one sack. He has 25 pass breakups, including a team-high tying eight this past season, and two interceptions, as well as a touchdown on a blocked field goal return during the 2021 season. - Birmingham News

Auburn's cornerbacks room will have to replace another early-round NFL Draft pick this fall. That has become a near-yearly ask of this position, as the Tigers have continued to churn out NFL talent in the secondary - from Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean to Noah Igbinoghene and most recently Roger McCreary, the All-American who held down the top corner spot for Auburn the last two seasons. McCreary's departure leaves a big hole to fill for Auburn, but with a trio of experienced corners back in the fold, as well as a key spring transfer addition, the unit will try to keep pace in its second year under defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge.

Not only did Auburn lose McCreary to the NFL, but the Tigers' secondary was arguably the hardest-hit position group when it came to the transfer portal after last season. Auburn saw Ladarius Tennison (a key rotation piece at nickel), Dreshun Miller (a former West Virginia standout), Ro Torrence and Eric Reed Jr. all transfer out of the program. That left Auburn a little thin at cornerback this offseason - and the Tigers' pursuit of Jacksonville State transfer Malik Feaster late last month before he committed to Florida State only further supported the belief that the program could bolster its depth there. Still, Auburn should feel confident in what it has in its cornerback room, especially with the pieces that return from last season: Nehemiah Pritchett, Jaylin Simpson and Donovan Kaufman. - Birmingham News

Auburn's All-America cornerback is out the door, now with the Tennessee Titans after being picked in the second round of the NFL Draft. Roger McCreary's departure after being a stalwart cover corner for the Tigers has left a hole in Auburn's secondary - but that's nothing new for a program that has had a run of successful cornerbacks over the last several years. No. 6 in AL.com's MVP 10 countdown could be the next in that lineage: senior corner Nehemiah Pritchett. The 6-foot-1, 182-pounder has been a contributor in Auburn's secondary since his freshman season, and after starting eight games opposite McCreary last fall, Pritchett could be tasked with stepping into a starring role this season.

It's an assignment Pritchett, as well as his coaches, believes he's well-suited for. "He is one of those guys that, when you went down there toward the end when they were doing the maxes (in the weight room in the winter), like he was a different person," defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding said. "I mean, there's no question about his speed. He can run. But to be a complete football player, having some more of that body armor and things like that - and I also see the confidence. He's not a real loud type of player off the field, but he is one of our guys in our leadership group on defense. He's stepped into that role. We expect a lot out of him. "...And I think he's going to be a more complete player. He can certainly cover and certainly run. But I like what we see with his effort and his opportunity for some leadership in that, too." - Birmingham News
