Former Oklahoma and UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced Saturday he is transferring to Oregon for a sixth season of college football. Gabriel, who is from Hawaii, posted on social media "Marcus Approved" in reference to former Oregon Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, who was also born in Hawaii.

Gabriel wears jersey No. 8 in honor of Mariota. Oregon opens its 2024 season on the road against Hawaii. Gabriel lines up as Oregon's replacement for Bo Nix, a Heisman finalist who spent the last two seasons with the Ducks after starting his career with Auburn. The Ducks are transitioning from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten next season. - AP College Football

At least one big offensive piece will return for OU football in 2023. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced his return on Twitter. "This island boy found a home in Oklahoma," Gabriel posted. In his first season with the Sooners after spending three seasons at Central Florida, Gabriel threw for 3,168 yards and 25 touchdowns with six interceptions in 12 games. It was the fewest passing yards for OU's starting quarterback - including the combined Spencer Rattler/Caleb Williams numbers in 2021 - over the past eight seasons, except for the COVID-truncated 2020 season where Rattler threw for 3,031 yards.

It was the fewest passing touchdowns for an OU starter during the span, including 2020. There were high expectations for the Sooners offense when Gabriel transferred from Orlando, where he threw for 8,037 yards and 70 touchdowns in 19 games from 2019-21 before suffering a career-ending injury. In Norman, Gabriel reunited with offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, who was the Knights' offensive coordinator in 2019 when Gabriel threw for a career-high 3,653 yards. His performance was inconsistent at times - he completed only 43.8% of his passes against TCU on Oct. 1 before being injured, and threw three interceptions in the Sooners' Nov. 5 loss to Baylor, but he also threw for more than 400 yards twice becoming the first OU quarterback since Baker Mayfield in 2017 to reach the mark multiple times in a season. - Daily Oklahoman

Dillon Gabriel passed for two touchdowns and ran for another and Oklahoma became bowl eligible after knocking off No. 24 Oklahoma State 28-13 on Saturday night. Eric Gray rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown and Drake Stoops had a career-high six catches for 89 yards for the Sooners (6-5, 3-5 Big 12), who jumped out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead and held on. Spencer Sanders passed for 381 yards and a touchdown for Oklahoma State, but he threw four interceptions. Brennan Presley had nine catches for 118 yards and Braydon Johnson had seven receptions for 109 yards for the Cowboys (7-4, 4-4, No. 22 CFP), who now are eliminated from contention for a spot in the Big 12 title game. The matchup was one of the last in the Bedlam series with both teams as Big 12 members. Oklahoma is slated to leave for the Southeastern Conference in the next few years.

Gabriel had a short touchdown run and a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jalil Farooq to give the Sooners a 14-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. The Sooners intercepted Sanders twice in the early going, and the second led to a 2-yard touchdown run by Gray that gave the Sooners a 21-0 lead. The Sooners gained 299 yards in the first quarter, the second-most yards Oklahoma has ever gained in a quarter. The Sooners led 28-3 at halftime. Quinton Stewart's 2-yard TD catch from Sanders cut Oklahoma's lead to 28-10 late in the third quarter. Oklahoma State drove to the Oklahoma 16 before DaShaun White intercepted Sanders in the end zone with about six minutes remaining. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Gabriel's 403 passing yards and 440 total offensive yards were both the second most by a Big 12 player this year and the most in a conference game. He threw for 304 yards in the first half alone, marking OU's first 300-yard passing half in three seasons. Gabriel's performance helped the Sooners amass 701 yards of offense, their most against a Big 12 opponent in four years and the most by a Big 12 team this season (fourth most nationally). - Big 12 Football

Dillon Gabriel passed for 403 yards in his first game back after a concussion, and Oklahoma defeated No. 19 Kansas 52-42 on Saturday to end its three-game losing streak. Gabriel was injured in the second quarter of Oklahoma's loss to TCU on October 1, and the offense had sputtered in nearly seven quarters without him heading into the Kansas game. But a week after the Sooners were held to 195 yards against Texas, Oklahoma (4-3, 1-3 Big 12) exploded for 701 yards. Eric Gray ran for 176 yards, Marvin Mims had a career-high nine catches for 106 yards and Brayden Willis had five catches for a career-best 102 yards for the Sooners, who relieved some of the pressure that had been building for first-year coach Brent Venables.

It was Oklahoma's 18th straight win over Kansas, with all the victories coming by double digits. The Sooners haven't lost to the Jayhawks since 1997. Filling in for the injured Jalon Daniels (shoulder), Jason Bean passed for 265 yards and four touchdowns for Kansas. Lawrence Arnold had 113 yards and two touchdowns receiving and Mason Fairchild had 106 yards and caught two touchdown passes for Kansas. The Jayhawks (5-2, 2-2) lost their second straight and missed out on the chance to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2008. Gabriel completed 21 of 29 passes for 304 yards in the first half to help the Sooners take a 35-21 lead. The Sooners' 487 yards in the first half were the second-most gained in a half in school history, trailing the 507 gained in the first half against Missouri in 1986. Gray had 124 yards rushing in the first half, eclipsing his previous high as a Sooner before the break. The Sooners kept the Jayhawks at bay in the second half, controlling the ball for more than 17 minutes. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Dillon Gabriel threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and sixth-ranked Oklahoma hammered Nebraska 49-14 on Saturday in the Cornhuskers' first game following the firing of Scott Frost. The game was put on the schedule 10 years ago as the back end of a home-and-home series intended to celebrate what once was among college football's greatest rivalries. Instead, it was further confirmation the Cornhuskers are just a shell of the program that decades ago battled the Sooners for conference titles year-in and year-out. OU (3-0) posted its most lopsided victory over Nebraska (1-3) since a 45-10 win in 1990. The Sooners have won seven of eight against the Huskers. The next meetings are set for 2029 and '30.

The Huskers have lost 19 straight against Top 25 opponents and nine in a row against Bowl Subdivision teams. Frost's tenure, which lasted four years plus three games, was marked by close games. The first one under interim head coach Mickey Joseph was never in doubt after the opening quarter, and Memorial Stadium began emptying at halftime. Oklahoma scored 35 straight points after Nebraska opened the game with a six-play, 77-yard touchdown drive. The Huskers totaled just 71 yards on their next 37 plays in the first half and punted seven times, committed two turnovers and twice turned the ball over on downs before backup quarterback Chubba Purdy ran for a late touchdown. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Dillon Gabriel passed for two touchdowns and ran for another and No. 9 Oklahoma rolled past UTEP 45-13 on Saturday for Brent Venables' first career victory as a head coach. Venables was a full-time assistant for the previous 26 years in stints at Kansas State, Oklahoma and Clemson. He took over after Lincoln Riley left to take the Southern California job last December. Gabriel, a transfer from Central Florida, connected on 15 of 23 passes for 233 yards. Eric Gray rushed for 102 yards, Brayden Willis caught two touchdown passes and Marcus Major rushed for two scores for the Sooners.

Gavin Hardison passed for 244 yards, Tyrin Smith caught eight passes for 71 yards and Reynaldo Flores caught seven passes for 76 yards for the Miners (1-1). Oklahoma gained 301 yards in the first half to take a 28-10 lead. Gabriel passed for 164 yards and two touchdowns before the break. Reggie Grimes led the Oklahoma defense with 2 1/2 sacks in the first half, including one on the final play of the second quarter to snuff out a scoring threat. Oklahoma then held UTEP to 99 yards and three points in the second half. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

If it makes anyone feel better, Dillon Gabriel is not high among the quarterbacks listed in the myriad NFL Draft prospecti that flood the marketplace. Probably because Gabriel is 6-foot tall only on tippytoes. Not that being vertically challenged is an insurmountable curse. At the 2018 NFL Combine, Mayfield measured 5/8 of an inch over 6-foot. A year later, Murray measured 5-foot-10. Both went No. 1 in the draft. Gabriel is listed at 5-foot-11. "It's just something I was born with," Gabriel said Tuesday. "Can't control that one, right? But everything I do in the building and the way I work is what I can control, and just being really good at that, knowing I'm not 6-5, but shoot, I'm going to get it done whichever way I can."

Not to wish ill will on Gabriel's future, but the best-case scenario for OU football is that he has the kind of season Lebby predicted - unmatched production, leadership and experience - while NFL decision-makers worry about his height. Either way, the scouts won't likely doubt Gabriel's arm. "One of the greatest things Dillon does is throw the deep ball," Lebby said. "If you look at all of his throws on tape to his freshman and sophomore years and before he got hurt last year (at UCF), he can push the ball down the field. He's got great touch on it, understands how to get the ball out of his hand a little earlier if he needs to. That's a strength of his for sure." - Daily Oklahoman

The OU Spring Game was all Brent Venables hoped it would be. An OU football celebration, with former Sooner players returning en masse, a Heisman statue dedication for Baker Mayfield, a huge crowd and a spirited game. The new OU quarterback looked composed and agile, just as advertised, and his 19-of-28 passing, much of it against a ferocious south wind, was solid. Against the wind, Gabriel completed 10 of 13 for 130 yards. Gabriel threw a few passes behind his target, which the Sooners occasionally have seen in springs past but rarely in autumn. And Gabriel threw a pass intended for Jalil Farooq on a streak route, but cornerback Kendall Dennis had excellent coverage and intercepted. - Daily Oklahoman

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel has committed to become a Bruin after three seasons at Central Florida. Gabriel was rated as a Top 5 transfer quarterback by 247sports and his commitment to UCLA brings him closer to his home state of Hawai'i. Gabriel is the second transfer to announce his commitment to the Bruins this week, joining former Duke receiver Jake Bobo. These additions follow coach Chip Kelly's approach to the transfer portal in recent years. Kelly mentioned Wednesday that the Bruins took on only 11 early signees Wednesday in order to allow the program to explore the transfer portal to land impact players. Gabriel's commitment may indicate four-year starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson is unlikely to take advantage of his extra year of eligibility. - Orange County Register

Central Florida quarterback Dillon Gabriel will be out indefinitely after suffering a broken clavicle on the final play of the Knights' loss Friday night to Louisville. UCF (2-1) announced Saturday that Gabriel would not need surgery, but it gave no timetable for his return. The junior is one of the top quarterbacks in the country. He led the nation in yards passing last season and completed 68.7% of his passes for 814 yards and nine touchdowns. Gabriel was injured with the Knights trailing by a touchdown in the final seconds deep in their own territory as they tried to make a desperation lateral play.   UCF has been picked to finish second in the American Athletic Conference preseason media poll, snapping a two-season streak of being the favorite. The Knights, who received 241 points and two first-place votes, finished behind Cincinnati, which was the overwhelming favorite with 22 first-place votes. The Bearcats are coming off a conference championship and a spot in the New Year's Six Access Bowl. The preseason favorite has gone on to claim at least a piece of the AAC championship in just two of the past eight seasons. UCF is coming off a 6-4 season in 2020 and hired a new coach in Gus Malzahn in February. The team returns 16 starters, including quarterback Dillon Gabriel. - Orlando Sentinel

UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel continues to rack up preseason accolades, this time finding himself among 80 candidates on the Maxwell Award watch list released Monday. Gabriel, who is set to enter his third season as the Knights starter, was among 37 quarterbacks named for the award that is given to the best college football player. He was a semifinalist for the award last season, which was won by Alabama's DeVonta Smith. Former UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton, who transferred to Florida State in December, is also on the list. - Orlando Sentinel

Gabriel has averaged 3,611 passing yards through his first two seasons and it's safe to assume when he wraps up the 2021 campaign, he could wind up holding several of the school's career records. He cut his interception percentage from Year 1 (1.76%) to Year 2 (0.97%) in half while increasing his touchdown-to-interception ratio from 4.14 to 8. To put it in perspective, during his Heisman Trophy season in 2019, former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow's interception percentage was 1.14% and his touchdown-to-interception ratio was 10. Gabriel will be a junior so there's always a chance he returns in 2022 but another solid season could be enough to draw his interest at the next level. - Orlando Sentinel

Central Florida hired Gus Malzahn as its football coach Monday, a little more than two months after he was fired by Auburn. Malzahn was 68-35 in eight years with the Tigers, never having a losing season and going 39-27 in the Southeastern Conference. UCF scheduled an afternoon news conference to introduce its new coach. UCF lost both its athletic director (Danny White) and football coach (Josh Heupel) to Tennessee last month. UCF hired Terry Mohajir as AD last week. Mohajir was the athletic director at Arkansas State during Malzahn’s one season at the Sun Belt school. UCF has been one of the top teams in the American Athletic Conference since joining the league in 2013. The Knights have won the conference three times and played in three BCS or New Year's six bowls. - AP College Football

2020 ALL-AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): QB Dillon Gabriel, UCF,...Gabriel--a semifinalist for both the Davey O'Brien and Maxwell awards--ranks first nationally in total offense (387.9 yards per game) and passing yards per game (372.6) and stands second in TD passes (30) and passing yards (3,353). Gabriel became the first UCF quarterback to throw for 400-plus yards on consecutive Saturdays (417 vs. Georgia Tech, 408 vs. ECU) and set the UCF single-game record for passing yards with 601 vs. Memphis in 2020.

With five TD passes on back-to-back weeks vs. Memphis and Tulane, he became the first UCF quarterback to do that in 33 years. Only three FBS players in the past 15 years have had at least 400 passing yards, five passing TDs and zero interceptions in consecutive games. That list includes Gabriel (vs. Memphis and Tulane), Jared Goff at Cal in 2015 and Joe Burrow at LSU in 2019. Gabriel's midseason string of 228 straight passes without an interception came to an end vs. Cincinnati. - Central Florida Football

Three plays later on fourth-and-7 at the USF 37 - with the Knights clinging to a 7-point lead - Gabriel hit O'Keefe for a 12-yard gain.   Dillon Gabriel passed for 328 yards and two touchdowns, UCF rushed for another 300-plus and the balanced, high-octane offense swamped Houston 44-21 on Saturday. Gabriel, who leads the nation in yards passing per game, was 19 of 33 for 328 yards with a pair of TD passes to Ryan O'Keefe. Otis Anderson (170 yards rushing), Greg McCrae (107) and Ben Thompson (87) each ran for touchdowns as the Knights (4-2, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) piled up 681 yards of offense. Gabriel has thrown 166 passes without an interception.

Houston (2-2, 2-1) lost for the first time in conference with Clayton Tune throwing two interceptions that resulted in 14 UCF points. Tune was 21-of-41 passing for 263 yards and a touchdown. Tune capped a quick, 82-yard fourth-quarter drive with a touchdown toss and two-point conversion pass, closing to 37-21 with 4:17 remaining. The Cougars onside kick attempt failed, and McCrae made a huge third-and-long conversion with a 20-yard gain that led to Anderson's 28-yard touchdown, icing the game.   It was an off night for UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who completed 28 of 51 passes for 330 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He started off hot, finding Jacob Harris for a 12-yard touchdown for the first score of the game. But Gabriel went 1-of-8 during a stretch that included his second interception of the season on a ball batted up at the line of scrimmage and picked off by Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins. Gabriel threw two interceptions against the Golden Hurricane during last season's 34-31 loss. "I put this one on me," Gabriel said after dropping to 11-4 as a starter. "I've got to be better at QB play and we have to execute at a higher level. It shows when you don't do that what happens." Heupel said the entire team was responsible for breakdowns that cost the Knights a win. "Last year, we were 0-3 in those one-score games," he said.   It wasn't the way UCF wanted to start its road contest against East Carolina, but the Knights overcame mistakes and penalties to blow out the Pirates 51-28 Saturday. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw four touchdown passes for the second consecutive game and at one point completed a school-record 18 consecutive passes as the offense generated more than 600 yards during back-to-back games. It was the 41st straight game that the Knights scored at least one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown. It was another inauspicious start for No. 13 UCF (2-0, 1-0 AAC), which gave up a touchdown after a 75-yard kickoff return to Georgia Tech on the opening drive last week. During Week 2 against East Carolina (0-1, 0-1 AAC), pre-snap penalties crushed the Knights' early momentum. UCF committed false starts during its first four offensive plays of the game, a trend that proved tough to shake. The Knights set a school record with 19 penalties for a loss of 139 yards. UCF trailed in the first quarter for the second consecutive week after a 17-yard Darius Pinnix touchdown run gave East Carolina an early 7-0 lead. But it would be all Knights the rest of the way, with UCF scoring 41 consecutive points. A week after passing for a career-high 417 yards in the opener, Gabriel connected with six different receivers for 408 yards. - Orlando Sentinel

Less than 48 hours after proclaiming his team as the best in Florida, UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel did what any pure passer worth his eye black would do. He held firm in the proverbial pocket. Gabriel stood by his proclamation during a brief session with reporters Monday, two days after his 417-yard, four-touchdown performance in the Knights' 49-21 romp of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The week before, the Yellow Jackets defeated FSU, 16-13. "I said what I said, and I was confident in it," said Gabriel, whose performance thrust him into early Heisman chatter. "It's up for you guys to feel whatever you guys want to feel. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but I still feel we're the best team in Florida, and that's all I've got to say." To this point, only four of the state's seven Division I-A programs have played a game. Florida, Florida Atlantic and Florida International are slated to open their seasons this weekend. Following UCF's win Saturday, it moved up one spot - to No. 13 - in the latest Associated Press rankings, behind No. 12 Miami (2-0) and the fifth-ranked Gators. - Tampa Tribune

Dillon Gabriel made sure Central Florida didn't let another game slip away on the road. The sophomore threw for a career-best 417 yards and four touchdowns, leading the No. 14 Knights to a 49-21 victory over Georgia Tech in their season opener Saturday. It was a rewarding performance for UCF, coming off the uncertainty of the pandemic-affected summer and a bit of a disappointing season by its standards in 2019. The Knights lost three games - all on the road - by a total of seven points.

After falling behind 28-7, Georgia Tech closed within a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. But Gabriel led a dominating performance the rest of the way, finishing 27 of 41 to eclipse his previous career high of 365 yards in a game last season at East Carolina. "We had so many guys making plays all over the field," Gabriel said. "When that happens, you see what we can do." UCF bounced back after giving up a long return on the opening kickoff and falling behind less than a minute into the game. Tre Nixon and Marlon Williams each hauled in a pair of TD passes. Showing off its running back depth, UCF got touchdowns on the ground from Greg McCrae, Otis Anderson and Bentavious Thompson.   Dillon Gabriel burst onto the college football scene last season, setting UCF records for a true freshman quarterback. The southpaw went from a virtual unknown to a household name after earning the starting job during the second game of the 2019 season. As Gabriel prepares for his second season, there's plenty of room for improvement. "Year 1 to Year 2 for a quarterback, there's a ton of growth," UCF coach Josh Heupel said Thursday. "There is every year, but there's a ton of growth there that can happen." Gabriel set the school's single-season record for passing yards with 3,653 while throwing 29 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. He led the Knights to a 10-3 mark. Gabriel earned Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Gasparilla Bowl after passing for 260 yards and earning three touchdowns during the Knights' 48-25 win over Marshall.

"He had a really good grasp of what we're doing, but just complete knowledge and control over what's going on," Heupel said. "His ability to check at the line of scrimmage when the play's not right, to understand those checks and to get us into a good play and to change protections. It changes what you're able to do offensively when your quarterback has that kind of command because he can get you out of the bad situations. "Year 1 as a play caller, you're trying to protect him a little bit. We're ultimately still really aggressive but you want to make sure you put him in advantageous situations and try to allow him to feel comfortable." - Orlando Sentinel
