2022 ALL-BIG 12 FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION: Lee Kpogba (LB, DNoY),...West Virginia's honorable mention choices were linebacker Jasir Cox, running back CJ Donaldson, wide receiver Sam James, defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson, linebacker Lee Kpogba and offensive tackle Wyatt Milum. - West Virginia Football

Ready or not, Lee Kpogba would likely find himself thrust into action via necessity. The transfer of Josh Chandler-Semedo left WVU with a hole at mike with returners Exree Loe and Lance Dixon likely to share time at the will linebacker spot. Tirek Austin-Cave transferred in from Miami in May and should add depth as well. Since arriving before spring, Kpogba estimated that he's added 10-15 pounds of weight to help him stand up to a Big 12 Conference schedule. And even if he's got the inside track on a starting position, he said he's still hard at work every day. "The big emphasis that I wanted to fix was me crossing over as far as my footwork and things," Kpogba said. "Put myself in better positions to make a play, not overrun the ball - things like that. And I feel I've done a better job with that." As Lesley's "quarterback" of the defense, Kpogba also understands that he must be a leader even as he still gets accustomed to the system. That balance has been the biggest undertaking of his time in Morgantown thus far. "There's still stuff that I need to learn," Kpogba admitted. "But as far as base stuff and the simple things in our defense, yes, I can teach and I've been helping them with that. Helping all the younger guys." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

West Virginia linebacker Lee Kpogba is determined to make everything he can from his second shot at Division I football. After two seasons at Syracuse (following an earlier commitment to West Virginia before flipping to the Orange when WVU went through a coaching change), things soured in upstate New York for the native of Ghana, who played his high school football in North Carolina. He was suspended from the 'Cuse after playing in 22 games over the 2019 and 2020 seasons, and he was forced to try to work his way back via the junior college route, enrolling at East Mississippi Community College for the 2021 season.

That served as a wake-up call for the enthusiastic linebacker, who hasn't been shy in discussing what he has learned from a trip to the nether regions of the collegiate game. "Junior college was definitely a different experience for me." he said of his time at EMCC, which was the subject of the first two seasons of the documentary "Last Chance U," that has taken a look at three different junior college programs from 2016-20. "Being out there in Scooba, Mississippi, there isn't anything but football. It helped me stay locked in and really made me appreciate the game much more and some of the things I had in my life." While Kpogba's time at EMCC came after the Last Chance U cameras had moved on, he was a viewer of the series. "Last Chance U was pretty accurate, and (what I experienced) aligned with the series pretty well," he confirmed. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Babers said he would have information "soon" that addresses the status of Lee Kpogba, the linebacker who was suspended in February. Kpogba had surfaced down in Mississippi last month at a time the SU players were on campus for summer conditioning work, casting doubt he'll return to the team. "If you read the tea leaves, you kind of know," Babers said. Kpogba's contributions have mostly come on special teams and as a reserve linebacker the past two seasons. In 22 career games, he made 44 tackles, including two for loss and a sack. - The Post-Standard

Syracuse sophomore Lee Kpogba has been suspended indefinitely from the SU football program, the school announced Saturday. The press release did not specify why Kpogba was suspended. Kpogba, a 6-foot-1 linebacker, is a former four-star recruit from Parkland High School (North Carolina). He appeared in every game last season and finished with 43 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. - The Post-Standard
