No matter what sort of roster turnover the University of Utah has next season, it will return two of its top pass-catching options. Brant Kuithe, a fifth-year senior tight end who was lost for the season on Sept. 24 due to a torn right ACL, announced on Monday that he will return for a sixth season in 2023.Wide receiver Devaughn Vele will follow Kuithe's lead, the program also announced Monday. A fourth-year sophomore wide receiver in 2022, Vele at one point late in the regular season indicated h e was leaning towards leaving, but later did a 180-degree turn to indicate he was leaning towards staying. Is Devaughn Vele thinking about returning? On Nov. 12, Devaughn Vele took part in Senior Night festivities at Rice-Eccles Stadium. He said days later he was leaning towards leaving Utah with two years of eligibility remaining. On Tuesday, Vele, who at th e time cited his advanced college football age of 24 and the desire to have a legitimate shot at the NFL, sounds like he may be changing his mind. "I can say I have been thinking about it a lot lately, and while it isn't final, I have been leaning more t owards staying another year," Vele said. "Trying to get better film out there and be able to three-peat with these guys."We have a lot of good players coming in, but I know I am getting older. It's a part of life, but this program is special and I want to be a part of it. While it's not set in stone, I have been thinking about it a lot lately, and it's starting to lean towards staying another year, but you'll have my answer by the time the bowl game comes." Vele leads all Utes wide receivers in c atches (50), receiving yards (595), and receiving touchdowns (5), but he is correct in that his film is limited. In late July, before former Utah star Britain Covey traveled to Philadelphia for training camp with the Eagles, he stopped by the Utes' campus to work out with some current Utah players. Wide receiver Devaughn Vele took the opportunity to talk to Covey a bout playing at the next level. While Vele is locked in on the upcoming season with the Utes, he is hoping to launch his own NFL career someday. "I asked him a few pointers about the difference between the NFL and college football. He gave me a lot of go od pointers," Vele said of Covey. "The biggest thing is understanding that we think that NFL players don't make mistakes. But they do. Their understanding of the game heightens more. They study film all the time. They know your tendencies. That's what th ey exploit when they're playing against you. "This is most possibly my last season but I'm also looking at the future, what I can contribute if I make it to the NFL. I've been working on my craft, little things. Instead of just having that one-foot tap-i n for sideline catches, I'm practicing having two feet in. Things like that to heighten my game to not only help my team out but to also prepare me for the next level."During his time at Utah, Covey caught 184 passes for 2,011 yards and 11 touchdo wns. He also ran for 300 yards and accumulated 1,092 yards on punt returns, with four touchdowns, and 838 yards in kick returns, and one TD. Covey is supportive of his former teammates, like Vele, and he continues to try to help them. "Covey has a lot of faith in me. He told me that I can definitely play in the NFL. To hear that from a guy that's balling out in the NFL himself, it means a lot to me," Vele said. "The leadership that he had will always stay with me. I'm wishing him the best but I'm not wo rried about him. I know he's going to ball out. "But he's definitely helped me out a lot this offseason, texting me and talking to me," he continued. "I've been watching his film to help me with releasing and running my routes. If you can pick the mind o f a pro athlete like NFL players, and (apply) that, you can be a very successful player." - Deseret News

Utah quarterback Cam Rising's surgically-repaired right shoulder is closer to 100% healthy than it was at this time a year ago, so Kyle Whittingham last week made no bones about what he wants to see more of from his offense this fall. But to whom? Collec tively, the receiver room did not produce enough in 2021, a fact that fourth-year sophomore Devaughn Vele, the team's projected No. 1 wideout this fall, was willing to admit."Last year, we had a great season, but the receiver group, I felt like we won in spite of us a few times," Vele said Monday afternoon following the Utes' fifth practice of fall camp. "I thought we could have contributed a lot more last season. That's been how I've felt this offseason, and I think the rest of the group in the wide receiver room feels the same way. We have a lot of expectations upon us, but I'm confident we can do it." Vele, a former walk-on, enjoyed his best season as a collegian in 2021, finishing with 23 catches for 389 yards and a memorable flea-flicker to uchdown at USC. Fresh off its first Pac-12 championship and Rose Bowl appearance, Utah is looking to repeat in 2022 and finds itself ranked in the top 10 in several preseason polls. Some project the Utes as a contender for the College Football Playoff. "We're the champi ons coming back. We're not going to sneak up on anybody," said coach Kyle Whittingham. "There's a lot of good teams in the (Pac-12) South. We've just got to go about our business like we usually do. We don't have that under-the-radar feel to us this year ." The Utes say they are ready for everybody's best this fall."It's understanding that we are the team with a target on our back. Everybody is going to be coming for us. We're no longer that underdog team where they just overlook us," said Utes wi de receiver Devaughn Vele. "Now we're one of those powerhouses and when they think of the Pac-12, they think of Utah, not just USC or Oregon or Washington. "It's just understanding that role and being able to step into that spotlight and not shying away from it. Devaughn Vele emerged as Utah's top receiver this spring. The Utes have proven tight ends in Brant Kuithe and Dalton Kincaid but they need more firepower out of the wideouts. "We need to generate more explosive plays in the perimeter. A lot of our explos ive plays were generated on the interior with the tight end play," said offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. "The ability to create the one-on-ones because the tight ends are going to draw attention on the inside. It's taking advantage of the one-on-ones o n the outside with dynamic playmakers. I think we have the size and speed to do that. We just need to put it all together." Vele's size provides the Utes with a dangerous weapon."It's a big advantage when he goes up for contested balls. He's not o nly 6-5, but he has great body control," coach Kyle Whittingham said. "He can outmaneuver people for the football because his athleticism is at such a high level as well. "That's a great combination and a great weapon as a wide receiver to have that size and that acrobatic ability. He's got great hands. He hardly ever drops a ball. At one point, as University of Utah wide receiver Britain Covey made his way through Radio Row at Pac-12 media day last week in Los Angeles, the topic turned to redshirt freshman wideout Devaughn Vele. Covey's assessment of the former walk-on was partial ly rooted in the fact that Vele will perform well in practice, but he has had trouble transferring that into games. With Utah fall camp starting to unfold this week, Vele finds himself in an advantageous position. The Utes have depth questions at wide re ceiver beyond Covey, Solomon Enis and Jaylen Dixon. Kyle Whittingham gave every indication during spring practice that Vele can step in and grab at least the No. 4 spot, which would get him on the field consistently, but it's up to him to finally break t hrough."Going into a game is really hard when you haven't performed at a certain level in a game and you go into a Pac-12 atmosphere, it really is a challenge," Covey said later in the afternoon at Pac-12 media day. "I think there is a mental-toug hness side that people don't focus on enough. There's something that you have to carry over, and I feel like I've had that. I had to have that my whole life because I was small, being under-recruited, so I'm trying to help Vele develop that. "When he goe s out there, he needs to have no doubt he's an All-Pac-12 receiver. Two Utah wide receivers who have taken different journeys will be counted on to produce for the Utes this season. And they'll try to help fill the void left by wideouts Bryan Thompson and Samson Nacua, who left the program last winter. Junior Jaylen Dixo n entered the transfer portal in October 2020 but ended up withdrawing from the portal last February and returned to the Utes, something that had never been done before at the U. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Devaughn Vele has emerged this spring as a pot ential weapon, highlighted by his performance in the spring game, when he caught four passes for 66 yards and a touchdown."I have very high expectations for him," quarterback Charlie Brewer said of Vele. "I feel like he's a complete receiver. He h as size and he can jump out of a gym and really go up and high-point the ball. He's a big-play receiver. I feel like he's going to have a huge fall." Vele, a 6-foot-4, 205-pounder from San Diego, has played in nine games in his career, including one star t. He's recorded two receptions for 12 yards. "Devaughn Vele has been our secret weapon for a minute now. It sucks seeing Bryan and Samson moving on but we support them at the end of the day. They've got to do what they've got to do. In the days leading up to the April 17 spring game, Whittingham said positive things about Devaughn Vele, even going as far as to say the redshirt freshman had control of the fourth receiver spot as spring ball came to a close. At the spring game, Vele m ade Whittingham look smart, finishing with four catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. A 40-yard second-quarter catch from Brewer was among the offensive highlights of the afternoon as Vele had to shake off a clear defensive pass interference penalty on V onte Davis down the right sideline to finish the play. "The biggest thing I've been trying to learn is just how to do my job, understanding the offense," Vele said after the spring game. "We have a lot of playmakers on the offense, so I just want to add a little mix to it however I can.
