Patrick Herbert enters his fourth year at Oregon having barely had a chance to show what he can do, as injuries have sidelined the Ducks tight end each of the past two seasons. A former four-star prospect out of Sheldon High School in the class of 2019, Herbert has played in just one game, against Nevada as a true freshman, in his career. "It's a tough situation for sure," he said. "You don't wish it on anybody. But there's a plan for everything so I'm just going to keep working." During spring practice , Herbert and fellow tight end Cam McCormick were both limited due to knee and Achilles injuries, respectively.They've both spent a lot of time in the training room over the past two years and have leaned on each other throughout their recoveries. "I try and help him as much as I can because he hasn't had a lot of injuries," McCormick said. "So give him my knowledge, provide him knowledge where I can, being there for him, letting him talk some things out. I'm there to listen and there to give him advice." They're both back on the field and have been full participants throughout fall camp for Oregon, which held its 16th preseason practice on Tuesday. Projecting how much either will be able to contribute for the Ducks this fall is difficult, thoug h the coaches recognize their skills. "Pat, I think, it's scratching the surface on what he can be," tight ends coach Drew Mehringer said. "He gets better and better every single week as he continues to develop into his role. I think we're still trying t o figure out what those guys can and cannot be. I think they're both going to help us a lot." - The Oregonian

Oregon has lost a tight end due to injury. Third-year freshman Patrick Herbert, who missed the 2020 due to a knee injury, suffered another knee injury during Saturday night's practice at Autzen Stadium and is out indefinitely. "It's a good knee injury, s o he'll be down for a while," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "With DJ (Johnson) joining us again and the way that Cam (McCormick) is coming around, we feel good about the depth there, but certainly going to miss Patrick because he was playing great f ootball for us. "Really after coming off of a knee injury, he had been playing really well; more physical, running routes was really well, has always had great hands. After being here a couple of years he was getting accustomed to playing at a high level . Overall the group has good depth and we feel good about them." Herbert has played in just one game, against Nevada in 2019, in his career. He was UO's No. 2 tight end this offseason and worked with the starting offense, including making a pair of eight -yard catches during the spring game. - The Oregonian

Patrick Herbert is still technically a freshman in eligibility but close to a senior academically. The former Sheldon High standout is finally healthy and ready to contribute entering his third fall camp at Oregon. As a true freshman in 2019, Herbert mad e his debut against Nevada but utilized his redshirt while his older brother, Justin Herbert, led the Ducks to a Pac-12 championship and Rose Bowl victory. An injury during the second week of the 2020 fall camp prevented the youngest Herbert brother from playing at all last season, which did not count on the eligibility clock.Herbert, a third-year freshman still seeking his first college reception, is closing in on a degree in sociology with plans to obtain a master's in education. So does the 6- foot-5 tight end feel like a veteran leader or a rookie entering the start of fall camp Friday? "A little bit of both," Herbert said. "School-wise, I'm almost done. But football-wise, I haven't even really got started. It's a weird thing." The good news for Herbert is the 2020 season was strange for everyone as the Ducks finished 4-3 overall with head-scratching losses to California and Oregon State, but still won a Pac-12 championship. - Register Guard

Oregon Patrick Herbert hasn't played for the Ducks since the 2019 season after injuries forced him to miss last season. Justin Herbert didn't get a chance to complete a pass to his little brother during the 2019 season. Tyler Shough didn't get a chance t o complete a pass to Patrick Herbert or Spencer Webb during the 2020 season. Anthony Brown, who has taken all of the first-team snaps during Oregon's 13 spring practices so far, expects to be utilizing both of the talented tight ends during the 2021 seas on.The 6-foot-6, 244-pound Herbert and the 6-6, 240-pound Webb have been making plays again after injuries prevented them both from playing last fall. "Spencer Webb has always been there. Patrick Herbert is doing really well," Brown said when aske d which tight ends have been playing with the first team. "I haven't really been able to work with the young guys yet, but I'll probably get some work in with them in the summer." Oregon loses Hunter Kampmoyer to graduation after he led the Ducks' tight ends with 14 receptions for 161 yards and three touchdowns in Joe Moorhead's first season as offensive coordinator. - Register Guard
