Florida State defensive end Jermaine Johnson II penned a farewell letter to Seminoles fans Thursday as the redshirt senior transitions into preparations for the upcoming NFL draft. "I know this message can't explain all my feelings of gratitude for this university, but I'll give it my best shot … First, I want and need to thank God, my amazing support system, teammates, coaches and staff, and, of course, you amazing fans," Johnson said in a statement posted to Twitter. "The incredible opportunity to represent this university and everyone associated with it has been nothing short of a blessing, and I cannot thank God enough for it." After spending two seasons at Georgia, Johnson was among 13 transfers to join the Florida State roster in the offseason.

The redshirt senior immediately impacted the Seminoles, providing the defense with an elite edge rusher. He earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors earlier this month, capping a season where he led the conference in sacks (12) and tackles for loss (18). Johnson became the eighth Seminole to earn the honor since its inception in 1993, joining DeMarcus Walker (2016), Bjoern Werner (12), Darnell Dockett (03), Andre Wadsworth (97), Peter Boulware (96), Derrick Alexander (94) and Derrick Brooks (93). - Orlando Sentinel

Jermaine Johnson, a productive edge rusher for UGA, put his name in the transfer portal last December because he thought he could make even more plays somewhere else if given a chance for increased playing time. "It was kind of crazy," Johnson said of the many options presented. "I didn't know where I was going to go. It was kind of stressful. It was like a recruiting aspect, but you didn't have months to deal with it. I had to do it in like under a month." The place he landed at turned out to be Florida State. Seminoles coach Mike Novell didn't know Johnson, who took advantage of the NCAA's extra year of eligibility after his senior year at Georgia. He found out a lot about him by speaking to UGA defensive coordinator Dan Lanning, who worked under Norvell at Memphis.

Johnson and Norvell quickly bonded during their time in Tallahassee this offseason. Johnson was selected as one of three Seminoles brought to the ACC Kickoff event last month in Charlotte, N.C. "He believed in the man I am, the man I can be and also the player I am and the player I could be," Johnson said. Johnson was asked by a reporter who covers Miami about another former Georgia players, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, who transferred to play for the Hurricanes. "Tyrique's invaluable, he's a great player," Johnson said. "I saw how great a player he was and can when he came to Georgia. I talk to him every once in a while. He's very happy at Miami right now. He wouldn't want to be any place else." - Athens Daily Banner

Florida State opens its fall football camp with the team set to report on Friday, Aug. 6 according to the school. The Seminoles hit the field for the first practice of the 2021 season on Saturday, Aug. 7. FSU is looking to put a dismal 2020 campaign behind them, one that saw the team finish with a 3-6 record. It was the worst season since 1975 when the team finished 3-8. The next season, Bobby Bowden was hired and he spent the next 34 seasons retooling the program into a football powerhouse.

Since Jimbo Fisher's departure in 2017, the program has suffered through two head coaching hires and three straight losing seasons. Mike Norvell, who was hired in 2020, returns for his second season. The team struggled with the COVID-19 pandemic, failing to host spring or summer camps and losing several games to positive testing thresholds. Coupled with a young and inexperienced roster led to a disappointing showing in Norvell's first season in Tallahassee. - Orlando Sentinel

Florida State placed four players on Phil Steele's preseason All-ACC team. Defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who transferred from Georgia in the offseason, led the way with a third-team selection followed by running back Jashaun Corbin, offensive tackle Devontay Love-Taylor, linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. and defensive back Jammie Robinson, who were all fourth-team picks. Corbin finished second on the team in rushing with 401 yards and five touchdowns in his first season with the Seminoles after transferring in from Texas A&M. Love-Taylor appeared in seven games for FSU before suffering a season-ending injury. Dix played in all nine games last season as a true freshman, starting the final five games and finishing third on the team in tackles (45). Robinson appeared in 22 games at South Carolina before transferring to FSU this offseason. - Orlando Sentinel
