  12/02/22 - QB Layne HatcherrSr/2024, Ball State, 5-10, 213 (DS#54 QB) + More +

Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in transfer portal or planning to enter as of Dec. 1 is Texas State's Layne Hatcher: Hatcher, a fourth-year junior, made 27 starts in three seasons at Arkansas State, then transferred to Texas State in the offseason. He started all 12 games with the Bobcats this season. He did some good things in his first two seasons at Arkansas State, when Blake Anderson was coach: 46 TD passes, 12 picks. In the past two seasons, though, his production dipped: 38 TD passes, 23 picks. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources

  11/27/22 - QB Layne HatcherrSr/2024, Ball State, 5-10, 213 (DS#54 QB) + More +

Texas State coach Jake Spavital was fired Sunday after four seasons in which the Bobcats won just 13 games. Texas State finished its second consecutive 4-8 season on Saturday with a 41-13 loss at home to Louisiana-Lafayette. The Sun Belt program has had only one winning season since moving up to the FBS in 2012. "I strongly believe that Texas State Football can consistently win at a high level," athletic director Don Coryell said in statement. "We have some of college football's most passionate and generous fans and supporters; we have tremendous facilities; we are located in a hotbed of football-driven communities and recruits; we are aligned in our collective vision for Texas State Football; and we are working on providing the necessary resources to enable our student-athletes and coaches to be successful." Spavital, 37, was one of the youngest head coaches in major college football when he was hired after the 2018 season. He had been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at West Virginia, California and Texas A&M before landing his first head coaching job. Spavital and Texas State made headlines when they signed a recruiting class that initially had nothing but transfers and no high school recruits in 2021. - AP College Football

  11/19/22 - QB Layne HatcherrSr/2024, Ball State, 5-10, 213 (DS#54 QB) + More +

Layne Hatcher drove Texas State 45 yards in 21 seconds and Seth Keller kicked a 29-yard field goal on the final play to rally Texas State to a 16-13 victory over Arkansas State on Saturday night. Hatcher's heroics for Texas State (4-7, 2-5 Sun Belt Conference) came after Dominic Zvada kicked a 23-yard field goal for Arkansas State (3-8, 1-6) to tie the game at 13 with 31 seconds remaining. Hatcher took the field for the Bobcats with 26 seconds left and and threw three straight completions. The last two both covered 21 yards - to Drue Jackson and Donnovan Moorer.

A roughing-the-passer penalty after Moorer's catch gave Texas State a first-and-10 on the Arkansas State 12-yard line, setting the stage for Keller, who nailed all three of his field-goal attempts in the game. James Blackman's 26-yard touchdown pass to Johnnie Lang in the second quarter gave the Red Wolves a 7-3 lead at halftime. Zvada's 56-yard field goal made it 10-3 after three quarters. Lincoln Pare's 2-yard touchdown run and Keller's 49-yard field goal gave Texas State a 13-10 lead with 3:17 left to play. - Arkansas State/AP College Football

  10/08/22 - QB Layne HatcherrSr/2024, Ball State, 5-10, 213 (DS#54 QB) + More +

Layne Hatcher completed 26 of 36 passes for 281 yards and two first-half touchdowns, Tory Spears returned an interception 93 yards for a TD and Texas State never trailed Saturday night in the Bobcat's 36-24 win over Appalachian State. Lincoln Pare ran for a 2-yard touchdown that gave Texas State (3-3, 1-1 Sun Belt) a 7-0 lead with 4:54 left in the first quarter. The Mountaineers (3-3, 1-2) went three-and-out on the ensuing drive before Hatcher - who threw an interception in the end zone on first-and-goal from the 4 to end the game's opening drive - sandwiched a 2-yard TD pass to Charles Brown and a 23-yard scoring strike to Ashtyn Hawkins around a 33-yard field goal by Seth Keller to give the Bobcats a 24-0 lead with 40 seconds left in the first half. The Mountaineers used an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Texas State and a 24-yard pass from Chase Brice to Dashaun Davis on third-and-7 that set up a 30-yard field goal by Michael Hughes as time expired in the first half. Appalachian State got the ball to open the third quarter and Brice completed 5 of 6 passes - including a 23-yarder to Davis on third-and-4 - to move deep into Bobcats territory before Spears' pick-6 gave Texas State a 30-3 lead. Brice finished 40-of-53 passing for 395 yards and three second-half touchdowns for Appalachian State. - Texas State/AP College Football

Layne Hatcher threw for 362 yards and four touchdowns and Texas State controlled from the outset in a 34-0 win over Houston Christian on Saturday. Previously named Houston Baptist University, the school announced the name change to Houston Christian University on Wednesday. Hatcher completed 27 of 41 passes in the win. It gave him 100 completions in his first four games as a Bobcat, the most ever by a Texas State (2-2) quarterback after four games since the school moved to the FBS level in 2012. Marcell Barbee caught six passes for 112 yards and a touchdown for the Bobcats. Texas State outgained Houston Christian in total yardage, 479-142. The Huskies hadn't been shutout since a 76-0 defeat against Sam Houston on Nov. 15, 2014. The Bobcats won the only previous meeting between the schools, 20-11, on Sept. 2, 2017, in San Marcos. - Texas State/AP College Football

  07/01/22 - QB Layne HatcherrSr/2024, Ball State, 5-10, 213 (DS#54 QB) + More +

Heading into his first season at Texas State, junior quarterback Layne Hatcher went to work with one of the legendary families in football. Hatcher attended the Manning Passing Academy over the weekend, a four-day camp that's held annually at Nicholls State for football players between the ages of those entering the eighth grade and seniors-to-be in high school. Each year, around 40 college quarterbacks are invited to the camp to help coach alongside Archie, Cooper, Peyton, and Eli Manning. The Bobcat signal-caller was one of the few invited, joining Georgia's Stetson Bennett, Alabama's Bryce Young and Ohio State's CJ Stroud among others.

"You're part camp counselor," Hatcher said. "And then in the afternoons, you're working out with the Manning brothers and they're coaching you up and then you have some social events, networking stuff, meeting a lot of QB trainers that are across the country working out with the Mannings. You get to have kind of an all-around experience of coaching and working out and then meeting people and then having, like, just meetings about football and talking ball." The Little Rock, Ark. native went to the camp for the first time last year. He said he was a bit nervous, not knowing what to expect out of the experience. He mostly just listened, trying to soak everything in. This year, with a better understanding of the camp and who all would be there, Hatcher found himself enjoying everything a bit more. - San Marcos Record

  12/20/21 - QB Layne HatcherrSr/2024, Ball State, 5-10, 213 (DS#54 QB) + More +

Head coach Jake Spavital has always kept a competitive quarterback room since taking over the Bobcats. In 2019, he brought in Gresch Jensen and Brady McBride to compete with Tyler Vitt and Jaylen Gipson for the starting job - though, McBride was deemed ineligible to play due to transfer rules at the time. In 2021, Spavital brought in North Carolina State transfer Ty Evans to compete with Vitt and McBride. With Vitt declining to use his extra "COVID year" of eligibility, Spavital went searching for another signal-caller who could turn up the heat in the position group.

Layne Hatcher announced on Dec. 1 he would enter the transfer portal for a second time. The Little Rock, Ark., native spent his first college season at Alabama in 2018, redshirting on a team that reached the national championship and featured a trio of future NFL starting quarterbacks in Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones. He returned to his home state the next season, transferring to Arkansas State. Now, three years later, he's on the move again. Mitchell Gladstone of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported on Sunday that Hatcher is heading to Texas State. - San Marcos Record

The Red Wolves (2-8, 1-5 Sun Belt) scored the game's final 10 points as Hatcher hit Te'Vailance Hunt for a 20-yard score midway through the fourth quarter and Grupe delivered a 42-yard field goal for the lead with 1:17 left. On its final drive, UL Monroe reached the Arkansas State 44 before Rhett Rodriguez was intercepted.

Arkansas State pressured Rodriguez throughout the game as he completed just 12 of 29 passes for 160 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He was sacked six times and the Red Wolves had 14 tackles for loss. Defensive end Joe Ozougwu had eight tackles with 3 1/2 tackles for loss for Arkansas State.   Backup quarterback Layne Hatcher threw four second-half touchdowns - three of them to Corey Rucker - turning a one-point halftime deficit into a rout as Arkansas State dominated the second half to beat FCS-member Central Arkansas 40-21 in a season opener on Saturday. Central Arkansas used a stout defense and Breylin Smith's 66-yard scoring strike to Chris Richmond to lead 7-6 at halftime. The Red Wolves' scoring came on two Blake Grupe field goals. Arkansas State starting QB James Blackman directed a nine-play 51-yard drive for the go-ahead score with 8:21 left in the third quarter after Johnnie Lang returned a punt 29 yards to near midfield. Alan Lamar ended the drive with a 2-yard TD run for a 13-7 lead.

Hatcher took over from there, completing all 12 of his pass attempts for 150 yards. He found Rucker for the first time for a 34-yard score at the 2:53 mark of the third quarter. The duo connected twice in the fourth quarter from eight and 33 yards out to push the Arkansas State lead to 33-14. Hatcher capped the scoring with a 5-yard TD toss to Te'Vaila Hunt with 2:48 left to play. Rucker finished with nine catches for 138 yards. Blackman completed 16 of 26 passes for 169 yards. Anderson took the job before the start of the 2014 season. He has led the Red Wolves to a pair of Sun Belt Conference titles and six consecutive bowl appearances. He is one of just two active Group of Five head coaches in the nation to lead their programs to at least two conference championships and six bowl games since 2014.   Layne Hatcher passed for 393 yards and four touchdowns, including a late 13-yarder to Jonathan Adams, and Arkansas State held to beat Florida International 34-26 on Saturday night in the Camellia Bowl. The Red Wolves (8-5) came back to life offensively for a final big drive, highlighted by All-American and game MVP Omar Bayless's 52-yard catch down to the 12. Then they had two interceptions in the final minutes. The Panthers (6-7) converted a fourth-and-5 play with a pass to Austin Maloney, who matched the huge game of Bayless. But James Morgan's overthrow on the next play was intercepted by Jeremy Smith, who returned it 21 yards into FIU territory.

Arkansas State worked the clock down to 37 seconds and a punt left FIU starting at its 12 with no timeouts remaining. The Panthers got one first down on a pass interference call against Logan Wescott, who tipped the next pass into the arms of Darreon Jackson to seal the win. Hatcher completed 27 of 51 passes and had an interception. Bayless, the nation's No. 2 receiver, caught nine passes for 180 yards and a touchdown.
