Cornerback Sevyn Banks declared for the 2023 NFL Draft instead of returning to LSU, sources told The Advocate. Banks, a former Ohio State transfer, had one more season of eligibility. Banks transferred to LSU last spring after starting his career at Ohio State. He missed the first three games as he recovered from an injury, then Banks suffered a bruised spinal cord when he made a tackle on the opening kickoff Oct. 1 against Auburn. He did not play the rest of the season.As a fifth-year senior, Ba nks did not have to formally submit his name for the draft by the Jan. 16 underclassmen deadline. He still made his decision around then, a source said. Though widely thought Banks had returned to LSU because he never made a public announcement, the team knew of his choice. Banks plans to participate in LSU's Pro Day next month, a source said. It'll be the first chance to see him work out since he was taken off the field on a stretcher after the kickoff at Auburn. He did not dress for another game as he recovered, and the former Ohio State starter is now trying to reach the NFL after two injury-marred seasons. Banks was a four-star recruit and the No. 221 overall player in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, out of Jones High School in Orlando, Florida. Jordan-Hare Stadium went silent as LSU's Sevyn Banks remained on the ground, not moving, after delivering a helmet-first hit on the opening kickoff. Banks was carted off in a stretcher, and by halftime, he was back in the locker room with a neck brace, w ith movement in his extremities. LSU coach Brian Kelly had more news on Banks at the media conference on Monday. "The diagnosis is a spinal cord bruise, which puts him similar to Major Burns' situation, where there was a bruise, nothing else though, no s tructural issues," Kelly said. "That's probably going to take 5-6 weeks before we get him back. Now, Major burns starts running today, he'll be outside running with us. Next week, he'll begin football non-contact drills with us. So there will be a simila r protocol and procedure provided there's no setbacks along the way." Burns was sidelined for the New Mexico game on Sept. 25. After a scary injury early in the Auburn-LSU game Saturday, LSU senior Sevyn Banks was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center where he was treated and released before the end of the game. LSU head coach Brian Kelly on Sunday thanked the staff at EAMC f or their work with Banks, along with the Auburn's medical team and LSU's own trainers and doctors. Banks returned to the stadium before the end of the game. Banks went down on the game's opening kickoff. Auburn player Wesley Steiner saw his injury and im mediately jumped up and down gesticulating for the LSU trainers to come to the field to treat Banks. The stadium fell into a hush as Banks was carefully carted out.Later in the game it was announced that, after a series of tests at the hospital, B anks was alert and mobile and had been cleared to leave the hospital and return to the stadium. "A special thanks to the Auburn medical team, staff at East Alabama Medical Center and Beau Lowery and our trainers and doctors for their work last night," Ke lly posted to Twitter on Sunday morning. Steiner posted shortly after the game: "For all those that believe in prayer please pray for Sevyn Banks long term health and swift recovery to playing football. He suffered and injury tonight at Jordan-Hare and i t struck me deeply. He was being responsive. Thank Jesus for that one. I just want others to pray for him." - Opelika-Auburn News

LSU defensive back Sevyn Banks was injured on the opening kickoff against Auburn on Saturday night. Banks was strapped onto a stretcher and carted off the field after the entire team came onto the field in support. Auburn's Wesley Steiner immediately sig naled to the LSU sideline after the play with Banks lying on the ground. ESPN reported that Banks was talking to medical personnel and would be taken to East Alabama Medical Center. No details were immediately available on the nature of his injury. Banks was called for targeting on the play. Banks is a graduate transfer who played in 36 games for Ohio State, starting 14 of them. Banks had only played in one game for LSU, making four tackles against New Mexico. - AP College Football

At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, Banks was a two-year starter at Ohio State, starting in eight games and recording eight pass breakups as a junior. He was a third-team preseason All-American in 2021 and made the Thorpe Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy preseas on watch lists. But he arrives at LSU after dealing with injuries. A knee injury hampered him during the preseason and made him miss the first two games in 2021. He sat out the final three contests because of a hip injury. Given the state of LSU's depth chart at cornerback, keeping Banks healthy will be important. Coach Brian Kelly is confident that will be the case. Sevyn Banks became the latest outgoing Ohio State football transfer to head to the SEC, announcing on Twitter that he has committed to LSU. Banks, a Florida native, joins former Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly's first roster with the Tigers. He announced in January he was entering the portal as a graduate transfer. He withdrew his name from NFL Draft consideration due to an injury that kept him off the field at the end of last season. Banks did not play the first two games of the season or the final three games.In between he generally held down a starting spot opposite freshman Denzel Burke. He totaled eight tackles and one pass breakup. As a first-time starter in 2020, he recorded a team-high seven pass breakups with 23 tackles, one interception a nd a 55-yard fumble return touchdown. He was one of the secondary's more consistent performers on OSU's drive to the national championship game. Former Ohio State cornerback Sevyn Banks has signed with LSU, adding depth at a position of need and another transfer to the roster, the school announced Tuesday. Banks played four seasons at Ohio State. He appeared in 36 games and made 15 starts, bringi ng experience at outside cornerback. During his career, Banks recorded 43 tackles, 13 passes defended and two interceptions. He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors as a junior. Banks entered his senior year with NFL draft buzz, but he suffered a knee injury last spring that lingered into the season, limiting his production. Banks then missed the final three games with an injury. He entered the transfer portal in February. LSU needed more cornerbacks after losing every starter at the position thi s offseason. The Tigers signed UL junior Mekhi Garner, Oklahoma State senior Jarrick Bernard-Converse and two incoming freshmen, but the lack of depth on the roster has been exposed this spring as Bernard-Converse recovers from a fractured foot. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Add two more Ohio State football veterans to the list of those unable to practice this spring. Bucknuts first reported that cornerback Sevyn Banks and receiver Kamryn Babb are out for the remainder of spring practice due to injury. An Ohio State spokespe rson confirmed both players are unavailable. They join defensive tackle Haskell Garrett, offensive lineman Harry Miller, linebacker Dallas Gant and cornerback Cameron Brown as players known to be out of practice altogether or refraining from contact dril ls.
