Fresh off Saturday's 48-14 win over the University of Montana, the Bobcat football team received more good news on Sunday. Montana State's season-closing four-game win streak propelled the team to the fifth seed in the 2019 FCS Playoffs, and a first-roun d bye. The Cats, now 9-3 overall and 6-2 in Big Sky play, host the winner of the Albany-Central Connecticut State game next Saturday. Game won't be available until next week. The first-round playoff bye is MSU's first since 2012. "You get on one side of the bracket or you get on the other side of the bracket," Choate said moments after his team's draw was announce. "With four seeded teams from the Big Sky Conference, in a quarterfinal matchup there's the potential for all four of us to play one another . We're going to play (one of) a couple of teams from the east coast (in the second round) so weather isn't as big of a factor (for the opponent). They're going to have some weather they have to contend with, but they do have to travel a good ways. We'll start digging in on those two and see what we can find out about them."Choate is gratified that the Big Sky Conference, considered by many at the top of the FCS in terms of top-end teams, earned four seeds among the tournament's top six. Weber St ate enters the Playoffs seeded third, Sacramento State is fourth, the Cats fifth, and Montana sixth. "They mentioned it a couple of times (on the selection show), they talked about three-loss teams (earning seeds). But two of the losses Weber has are to FBS opponents, one of Montana's losses is to an FBS opponent, one of our losses is to an FBS opponent. (Sacramento State also lost to two FBS opponents.) We beat each other up a little bit, but I think the committee recognized the quality of the league o verall and rewarded us with those seeds." - Montana State Football

Isaiah Ifanse ran for 171 yards and three touchdowns to lead Montana State to a resounding 48-14 win over Montana on Saturday in the 119th Cat-Griz game. Montana fumbled on its first play and never recovered as MSU scored on its first five possession to jump out to a 31-7 lead midway through the second quarter. The win was the biggest margin in the rivalry game for the Bobcats (9-3, 6-2 Big Sky Conference) since 1966 when they won 38-0. The Grizzlies (9-3, 6-2) scored on consecutive possessions in the f irst half but that was all they could muster in the game between Top 10 FCS teams. The Bobcats ran for 382 yards and had 488 total yards. Logan Jones has 19 carries for 121 yards and one touchdown. Flanker Tyrone Marshall ran for another 81 yards on eigh t carries and one touchdown. Marcus Knight ran for both touchdowns for Montana and has 21 total touchdowns, which is third in school history. 2019 BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD WATCHLIST ADDITION: DL Bryce Sterk, Montana State,...Sterk is among the nation's leaders in sacks and tackles-for-loss. The Lynden, Washington product and University of Washington transfer has logged 9.5 sacks this season, with h is 1.06 per game ranking sixth in the FCS. Sterk's 14 tackles-for-loss this season, 1.6 per game, is 19th in the FCS. Tucker Rovig, a last-minute substitution at quarterback, threw for 221 yards and four touchdowns to lead Montana State to a 56-21 win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon. Ranked No. 8 in the Football Championship subdivision, the Bobcats (3-1) had t hree players rush for more than 100 yards. Logan Jones had 104, all in the first half. Lane Sumner had 113 and Shane Perry added 111. Rovig started in place of freshman Casey Bauman, who started the first three games of the season. Rovig started two gam es in 2018, but lost the starting job to Bauman.MSU pressured Norfolk State's Juwan Carter all day. Bryce Sterk led the way with 3.5 sacks and five tackles-for-loss. The Bobcats had 12 tackles-for-loss on the day. Carter finished completing 21 of 32 passes for 243 yard and two touchdowns. The Bobcats amassed 369 yards of offense in the first half and after the Spartans scored the first touchdown, they answered with 21 straight points. Perry and Jones carried the run game and Rovig consistently fo und open receivers. The Bobcats finished with 670 total yards. Kevin Johnson rumbled 84 yards for a Spartan touchdown in the third quarter. After going into the half tied, then-No. 19 Montana State came out strong to start the third quarter. Following 28 unanswered points, the Bobcats had done everything they needed to do to secure the 38-17 upset victory over then-No. 13 Southeast Missouri State. The Bobcats win propelled them up four spots to No. 15 in this weeks' AFCA FCS Coaches' Top 25 Poll. North Dakota State received all 26 first place votes and remained the No. 1 team in the nation. The rest of the top five also remained unchanged w ith James Madison, South Dakota State, UC Davis and Eastern Washington sitting at spots two through five.This week saw two teams jump into the top 25 for the first time this season. Villanova checks in at No. 23 following their 38-10 victory over Lehigh to improve to 2-0 on the season. Southeastern Louisiana checks in at No. 24 following an unexpected off-week due to Hurricane Dorian and will be back in action on September 14 at Mississippi. Week 3 features a trio of top 25 matchups as No. 1 Nort h Dakota State travels to No. 18t Delaware. No. 5 Eastern Washington will also hit the road and travel to Alabama to take on No. 16 Jacksonville State. Some Scouts think the former 3* Washington transfer is too stiff for OLB. We'll see and know more off Road grades/updates in the fall. Sterk is up there in the mix for top FCS defenseive end, Day 3 before underlassmen factor in.
