West Virginia fired athletic director Shane Lyons on Monday, a move that comes amid the worst stretch for the football team in more than four decades. President Gordon Gee said there were no immediate plans to make changes under coach Neal Brown. Lyons is gone after nearly eight years. Gee said in a statement that Rob Alsop, WVU's vice president for strategic initiatives, has been named interim athletic director while a search is ongoing for Lyons' replacement. Brown has a 21-24 record in his fourth season, including 4-6 this year. It's the worst stretch since the football team went 17-27 under Frank Cignetti from 1976-79.

In September, after West Virginia started the football season 0-2 and fans turned up their criticism of Brown, Lyons said he would take a wait-and-see approach for the remainder of the season. Fans also had criticized Lyons' move to give Brown a contract extension following a 6-4 record in 2020, his only winning season. "We are supporting coach Neal Brown and our team as we complete our season over the next few weeks," Gee said in a statement. "We are aware there are some deficiencies, but we have not given up on the coach and the team, and they have not given up on each other. "The evaluation of the football program will be the first task of our new athletic director and no changes will be made until that review has been completed." Lyons was hired in January 2015 to succeed Oliver Luck. He previously served as deputy athletic director at Alabama and as associate commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. - AP College Football

J.T. Daniels threw for 203 yards and a touchdown to lead West Virginia to a 33-10 win over Virginia Tech on Thursday night. Freshman CJ Donaldson rushed for 106 yards and West Virginia (2-2) got a strong performance from its defense to win its second straight game after losing the first two. The Mountaineers, who beat Virginia Tech for the second consecutive season, scored on five straight possessions spanning the first and second half. Daniels’ 24-yard touchdown pass to Sam James with 11 seconds left in the first half gave the Mountaineers a 13-7 lead, and they never trailed again.

The Hokies (2-2) closed within 16-10 on a field goal by Will Ross with 4:19 left in the third quarter. West Virginia answered, scoring on a 6-yard run by Justin Johnson Jr. with 14:13 left in the game. The Hokies had West Virginia stopped twice on the drive, but personal foul penalties on Norell Pollard and Dax Hollifield kept the drive alive. Penalties hindered the Hokies all night. They committed 15 for 132 yards. - West Virginia/AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD WATCH LIST: JT Daniels, West Virginia,... WVU transfer quarterback JT Daniels (6-3, 21) has quickly acclimated to the Mountaineers' offensive system, coordinated by Graham Harrell. With proven productive stints at both USC and Georgia on his resume, there's not much Daniels hasn't seen from opposing defenses, and getting used to Harrell's version of the Air Raid (a bit different, but not far removed from the classic version popularized by the Hal Mumme-Mike Leach coaching tree) hasn't been a big change. "I learned so much from all the offensive coordinators and coaches I have had, and I have been able to transition back and forth from an NFL style to an Air Raid style a couple of times over my career," added Daniels. "I've been able to process all of those changes." - West Virginia Football

  06/16/22 - QB JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

As might be expected from a veteran quarterback, WVU transfer J.T. Daniels has quickly acclimated to the Mountaineers' offensive system, coordinated by Graham Harrell. Of course, Daniels played for Harrell at USC, so even the few tweaks installed by the now-WVU offensive coordinator haven't been hard to pick up, even as they morph to take advantage of West Virginia's improving stable of running backs.

Also, there's Daniels' history of learning entirely new offensive systems, which has become such a strength that he lists "processing," as his top ability as a quarterback. "I played in an NFL style in high school and in my first year at USC, then it was the Air Raid (under Harrell). Then at Georgia it was more NFL, so I have played in both and moved back and forth. I pride myself on having a high football IQ, and I've always been heavily involved in every aspect of the offense. "I learned so much from all the offensive coordinators and coaches I have had, and I have been able to transition back and forth from an NFL style to an Air Raid style a couple of times over my career," added Daniels. "I've been able to process all of those changes." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

  05/06/22 - QB JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

WVU officially adds Georgia quarterback transfer JT Daniels: WVU coach Neal Brown announced JT Daniels, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound redshirt senior quarterback from Irvine, Calif., signed a grant-in-aid and will transfer to WVU from Georgia. Though he is listed as a senior, Daniels has two years of eligibility remaining due to the free COVID year granted by the NCAA. Daniels is a former 5-star prospect, reuniting with Graham Harrell, who served as his offensive coordinator at USC in 2019. Harrell now holds the same position with the Mountaineers. Injuries have derailed Daniels' time at his previous two stops.

After being named the starting QB at USC in 2018, where he started 11 games as a true freshman, an ACL injury the following season forced him to the bench. Kedon Slovis, who is now projected to be the starter at Pitt, took over and played well, forcing Daniels to hit the transfer portal. Daniels and Slovis could meet head-to-head Sept. 1 when the Backyard Brawl resumes at Heinz Field. Daniels, at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, transferred to Georgia, but his recovery caused him to miss the early part of the 2020 season, but he did start the final four games, including a Peach Bowl victory over Cincinnati. - Dominion Post

Stetson Bennett passed for 255 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to former starter JT Daniels, leading No. 1 Georgia to a 43-6 win over Missouri on Saturday. The game opened new questions for Georgia at quarterback while affirming the Bulldogs' season-long defensive dominance. Missouri was held to 273 total yards in Georgia's seventh game of the season allowing no more than 10 points. Missouri's Tyler Badie, the SEC's leading rusher, was held to 41 yards on the ground. Georgia (9-0, 7-0 Southeastern Conference) was impressive in scoring 40 unanswered points after Missouri's early 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs began the day leading the nation with their average of 6.6 points allowed per game.

Georgia led 34-3 before Missouri freshman quarterback Tyler Macon's 28-yard pass to Tauskie Dove set up a first down at the Georgia 3 in the final minute. The Georgia defense held on three plays from the 1. Daniels, who opened the season as Georgia's starter before suffering a lat injury, came off the sideline to make his first appearance since late September. Bennett, making his fifth consecutive start, enjoyed one of his best games. The former walk-on completed 13 of 19 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Daniels entered the game midway through the third quarter. Daniels, making his first appearance since his start against Vanderbilt on Sept. 25, played as if he has fully recovered from the injury that forced him to miss a month. Daniels completed a fourth-down pass to tight end John FitzPatrick before completing a 7-yard scoring pass to Ladd McConkey for a 40-3 lead. - Georgia/AP College Football

JT Daniels threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns playing only the first quarter as No. 2 Georgia dominated Vanderbilt 62-0 Saturday in the Bulldogs' biggest win in a series that started in 1893. This game was effectively over when Georgia (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) led 35-0 after the first quarter. The Bulldogs started three of four drives in Vandy territory. They recovered a fumble on a kickoff to set up one TD, then Christopher Smith intercepted a pass to set up a second TD less than 30 seconds later. Bulldogs' fans turned this into their home away from Sanford Stadium with Georgia red even in seats behind the Vanderbilt bench.

They got to watch the Bulldogs post their first shutout this season, forcing Vandy three-and-out nine times. Georgia nearly had more points than Vandy managed yards, outgaining the Commodores 524-77. Vanderbilt (1-3, 0-1) lost its fourth straight to Georgia and its 14th straight SEC game, a skid that could be longer if COVID issues hadn't forced Vandy to cancel its visit on Georgia's Senior Day last season. A program that won in Athens in 2016 showed how much rebuilding first-year coach Clark Lea faces. Tight end Brock Bowers started the scoring with a 12-yard run on an end around with 11:21 left in the opening quarter. Daniels threw a pass to Bowers, who finished off a 25-yard TD. Zamir White scored two plays after James Ziglor fumbled the kickoff, and Daniels hit Ladd McConkey for a 12-yard TD after the interception. Georgia actually had to drive 71 yards on its final scoring drive of the first quarter, and Ladd McConkey ran 24 yards for the TD. - Georgia/AP College Football

JT Daniels returned as No. 2 Georgia's starting quarterback Saturday night against South Carolina. Daniels didn't play in last weekend's 56-7 victory over UAB because of an oblique injury. Stetson Bennett stepped in and tied a school record with five touchdown passes - all in the first half. Despite Bennett's performance, the Bulldogs went back to the player who came into the season as their undisputed No. 1 quarterback. A transfer from Southern Cal, Daniels has guided the Bulldogs to a 5-0 record since taking over as the starter last season.

Daniels wasted no time making an impact in his return to the field. On the first play from scrimmage, he completed a 21-yard pass to Brock Bowers to spark a six-play, 75-yard drive that gave the Bulldogs a quick 7-0 lead. The next time Georgia had the ball, Daniels hooked up with Jermaine Burton for a 43-yard touchdown that stretched the lead to 14-3. South Carolina also had some suspense at quarterback. Former graduate assistant Zeb Noland made his third straight start in place of Luke Doty, who went down in practice last month with a foot sprain. - Georgia/AP College Football

Quarterback JT Daniels did not start Saturday for No. 2 Georgia against UAB because of an oblique injury. Daniels was replaced by senior Stetson Bennett, who started five games last season for the Bulldogs. Bennett got off to a blistering start, throwing a pair of touchdown passes in the first five minutes to stake Georgia to a 14-0 lead. Daniels' injury was not believed to be serious, but it did cause him enough discomfort that the Bulldogs decided to take no chances against the Blazers, who were a 25 1/2-point underdog. In the season-opening victory over Clemson, Daniels completed 22 of 30 passes for 135 yards with an interception. Neither team scored an offensive touchdown in Georgia's 10-3 victory, which was decided by an interception return for a touchdown. Daniels, a transfer from Southern Cal, is 5-0 as a starting quarterback since arriving at Georgia. - AP College Football

Georgia quarterback JT Daniels has had limited reps in practice ahead of Saturday's home opener against UAB due to an injury, according to a report Wednesday from Dawg Post. Daniels, according to the report, is said to be facing an upper-body injury. No other specifics were given, other than that Daniels has missed some opportunities with the first-team offense that he would normally receive. 247Sports' Dawgs247 site on Wednesday reported, citing sources, that "the injury isn't long-term but that Daniels is truly day to day." After playing four games in 2020, Daniels opened his first full campaign as a Bulldog with 130 yards at a 22-for-30 clip in the 10-3 win over Clemson in Charlotte. Daniels spoke with reporters after the game, so it is unclear when the injury occurred or became serious enough to lead to limited practice time. - Macon Telegraph

A few days after the name, image and likeness law came into effect in the state of Georgia on July 1, J.T. Daniels signed a deal with the Everett Sports Marketing agency to oversee any potential agreements that could come the star quarterback's way. An immediate thought might've been that Daniels would use the law to benefit himself as athletes are able to profit from their likeness with events such as autograph signings, TV commercial appearances and more. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, according to head coach Nick Saban, said his new starting signal caller has had around $1 million in agreements since July 1. Daniels decided to alter his approach to the NIL opportunities. He announced plans Wednesday to help those around him, especially in the Athens community.

Daniels will partner with Extra Special People Inc. to support those in an inclusive environment for people with physical and developmental disabilities from youth to adulthood. This marks Daniels' second known deal since the NIL law came into effect. He agreed to an autograph and memorabilia partnership with SportsCollectibles.com out of Tampa, Florida on July 15. The ESP organization has three locations in Georgia - Athens, Atlanta and Rome - and has started a national influence by recently expanding to San Francisco in 2019 via its Java Joy initiative. - Macon Telegraph

Georgia quarterback TJ Daniels and Tennessee receiver Velus Jones were teammates previously at Southern California. Now they're both in the SEC and were at media days on Tuesday. Daniels, who graduated from high school a year early, said he spent the spring before his freshman season visiting practice. "I would come up to USC and spend the weekend or spend almost the whole week there to watch spring practice and try and learn, and I stayed with Velus," said Daniels, who is from Irvine, Calif. "So Velus and I have been really good friends since I was 17. He's just a really good guy." Jones said he and Daniels spent a lot of time together. "Me and JT, we hung out a lot, played video games together," Jones said. "He was always at my apartment. Couldn't get him out. I tried to kick him out a lot." - Northwest Arkansas Times

After a bizarre season at the quarterback spot, redshirt junior JT Daniels could be a source of stability for a program entering the fall with national championship aspirations. Daniels passed for 401 yards and four touchdowns in his Georgia debut against Mississippi State after he was cleared from knee surgery. Georgia went 4-0 with Daniels at the helm. He passed for 1,243 yards with 10 touchdowns and 2 interceptions while completing 67.2% of his passes. Georgia averaged 8.3 more points per game (37.3) and 103.2 more yards per game (486) behind Daniels than it did under Stetson Bennett and D'Wan Mathis. - Northwest Arkansas Times

JT Daniels decided to clean up some of the wishy-washiness left over from the previous day. A day after posting "to be continued..." on his Instagram account, the Georgia quarterback used his Twitter feed to inform the Bulldog Nation he is indeed committing to playing for them in 2021. A third-year sophomore and therefore draft-eligible, there was some speculation that Daniels might test the NFL after just one season at UGA. Tuesday’s message ended any such conjecture. "Found my new home," Daniels wrote. "Now we got unfinished business."

Daniels’ news came in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon in which there were several roster updates in what’s expected to be a busy month of ingress and egress. The Bulldogs got some extremely good news from senior defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt, who announced he intended to return for another season, and junior running back James Cook, who decided he would return rather than test the NFL draft as an underclassman. - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A few days after wearing the Georgia uniform for the final time in the 2020 season, fan-favorite quarterback J.T. Daniels got cryptic on Instagram. It's a good kind of cryptic for fans of the Bulldogs. Daniels, who transferred to the program from Southern Cal in the offseason, is eligible for the NFL Draft as a redshirt sophomore. He has dodged nearly every question regarding his future in Athens, but Monday's social media post provided a hint.

Nothing has been said definitively, but if Daniels' words on Instagram hold the assumed meeting, No. 18 might be suiting up in Athens for another year. Daniels played in four games in his first season at Georgia. He replaced previous starter Stetson Bennett against Mississippi State and finished with 1,231 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. His campaign finished with 392 yards and a touchdown toss to sophomore receiver George Pickens in the Peach Bowl victory over Cincinnati. - Macon Telegraph

Daniels proved this since taking over the starting quarterback job against Mississippi State. But against one of the nation's best defenses in Cincinnati, he cemented his position as Georgia's 2021 starter. He connected on 26-of-38 passes for 392 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Peach Bowl. With the game on the line down the stretch, he calmly led the Bulldogs down the field for the game-winning field goal. After the game, Daniels said he feels like he's been a Bulldog for years. In reality, he arrived on campus in June and went through an offseason wrecked by COVID-19. Now, Daniels prepares for an offseason where he will be the unquestioned starter. He will be able to focus on learning Todd Monken's offense and developing chemistry with all of his receivers. - Macon Telegraph

JT Daniels threw three touchdown passes, two of them to George Pickens as No. 12 Georgia broke away from Missouri 49-14 Saturday. Zamir White ran for 126 yards and a score while Georgia (7-2) dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Missouri (5-4) managed just 200 yards of offense after topping the 600-yard mark each of the past two weeks. The game was tied at 14 when Pickens reached to his shoe tops to gather in a 36-yard touchdown toss from Daniels in the final minute of the first half. The pair connected again on the first drive of the second half, with Pickens catching a short pass on a slant route, stepping out of a tackle attempt and racing 31 yards for a score. Daniels completed 16 of 27 passes for 299 yards. Pickens caught five passes for 126 yards and James Cook caught a TD pass and ran for a score. - George/AP College Football

Kirby Smart has found his new starting quarterback. In his first Georgia start, Daniels led the Bulldogs to a 31-24 win over Mississippi State and put up some numbers that hadn't been posted by a Georgia QB in nearly a decade. The USC transfer and former five-star recruit finished 28 of 38 for 401 yards with four touchdown passes and no interceptions. It was the Bulldogs' first 400-yard passing game since Aaron Murray in 2013 and their first 300-yard, four touchdown pass performance since Murray during that 2013 season. - Birmingham News

Georgia's offense got just what it needed from the Southern California transfer. Accuracy. Connecting on the deep ball. A turnover free game. And Daniels taking a knee in the victory formation as Georgia improved to 5-2. The students chanted "JT, JT." "It's started to sink in a little bit but it really hasn't yet that I got to play football again," Daniels said on a postgame Zoom session with reporters, his first time speaking to the media as a Bulldog. "I've really felt a lot of gratitude, gratitude for my family, for this team, for this coaching staff, for everyone for helping me get back on my feet and play football again." So the question was asked in one way or another of coach Kirby Smart, why did he wait so long to send Daniels into a Georgia game? He understood why people would wonder why Daniels didn't play before Saturday night. "Absolutely, I would," Smart said.

He said fans should take into consideration his 20 some years of coaching experience and even more from offensive coordinator Todd Monken. "Maybe the question should be, man, aren't they glad they got JT here when nobody thought maybe they needed him?" Smart said. "Would I have loved him to go out and do that same thing to other teams? Absolutely. But the decisions were made on who we felt gave us the best opportunity to win, and a lot of that had to do with mobility and Stetson's play. As Stet struggled, we had to look for other options." Yes, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Daniels was coming off a torn ACL sustained in the season-opener last year, but the Bulldogs struggled mightily at the position since the second half of the Alabama game with Stetson Bennett and D'Wan Mathis. - Athens Daily Banner

JT Daniels made quite a debut between the hedges, throwing for 401 yards and four touchdowns as No. 13 Georgia held on for a 31-24 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday night. Playing for the first time since the 2019 opener with Southern Cal, Daniels became the third quarterback to start for the Bulldogs (5-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) this season. It looks like they've finally found their guy. The transfer from USC delivered one big play after another, capped by a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kearis Jackson that broke a 24-24 tie with 9:50 remaining. What made it more impressive: Jackson and George Pickens had dropped potential TD passes on back-to-back plays, and a holding penalty left Georgia with third-and-20.

But Jackson slipped behind the secondary in the middle of the field, and Daniels spotted him to finally finish off pesky Mississippi State (2-5, 2-5). Daniels became the first Georgia quarterback to pass for more than 400 yards since Aaron Murray against Auburn in 2013. Freshman Jermaine Burton was Daniels' favorite receiver, hauling in eight passes for 197 yards - including TD catches of 18 and 48 yards, no to mention another grab of 49 yards. Burton had just 130 yards receiving through the first six games of the season as Georgia struggled to get its passing game going while Daniels watched from the bench. As Daniels took a knee to close out this game, the limited crowd of about 20,000 at Sanford Stadium chanted "JT! JT! JT!" - Georgia/AP College Football

Georgia enters an off week before traveling to face Kentucky on Oct. 31 - a week later than originally planned due to a pandemic-related SEC schedule change. Many outside the program beg the question - Where has JT Daniels been? The former Southern Cal transfer who received an immediate eligibility waiver has become a frequent addition to the trends list on Twitter during Georgia games. No matter how Bennett has done, there have been inquiries about Daniels. Daniels threw for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during his first season as a Trojan. He suffered a torn ACL in the 2019 season opener against Fresno State, and had a clean-up knee procedure in December which delayed his recovery. Prior to the Auburn game on October 10, Daniels received medical clearance for contact.

He has traveled, been a full participant in warmups, but has yet to see the field. By some indications, Daniels' isn't yet ready to run a Todd Monken-based offense while still rehabbing from his knee injury and sporting a bulky knee brace. Monken, who has experience with a plethora of offensive styles, said it's "hard to be a statue" and produce explosive plays offensively. Monken's philosophy answers why Georgia brought in Newman, started Mathis and now has stuck with Bennett. They all feature a dual-threat option. They can move in the pocket. Daniels, who already resembles Fromm-like mobility, might have lingering soreness in his knee. If so, the former five-star prospect could be more statue-like and that wouldn't quite fit Georgia's plans. - Macon Telegraph

Stetson Bennett's performance Saturday at Arkansas would be considered heroic in UGA football circles after he entered in the second quarter and sparked the Bulldogs' 37-10 win. It wasn't enough of a showing for UGA coach Kirby Smart to commit to him on Monday as the starter for this Saturday's 7:30 p.m. home opener against Auburn. Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels will be cleared from a knee injury, Smart said, but the starting spot will be decided throughout practice this week. "All I can tell you is we're going to continue to work with all the guys we've got," Smart said. "And put the best guy in there that gives us the best opportunity to win football games." Georgia's depth chart listed its four quarterbacks as possible starters. In order, D'Wan Mathis was followed by Bennett, freshman Carson Beck and Daniels with 'or' being the key word following each name. Daniels appeared as the front runner to start after Wake Forrest graduate transfer Jamie Newman opted out of the season and his clearance appeared to hang in the balance until kickoff Saturday. - Athens Daily Banner

Georgia scrimmaged Saturday four days after its leading contender for the job, Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman, changed everything by informing coach Kirby Smart on a day off from practices that he was opting out of the season, something that became public the next day. That has offered an opportunity for redshirt freshman D'Wan Mathis to push Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels for the No. 1 job, but Mathis started slow in the second preseason scrimmage at Sanford Stadium by throwing a pair of interceptions. Daniels didn't zoom way ahead of Mathis either on a day when both worked with the No. 1 unit, according to Smart. "It almost feels like you really want the guys to assume the lead, take the lead and that hasn't happened yet," Smart said. "You're liable to have a great play or a great series and come back with a boneheaded mistake or a turnover. Nobody has really just taken charge and taken over. I wish I could say that."

Newman pulled the plug on his time as a Bulldog 235 days after announcing he was headed to Georgia. Smart didn't elaborate much on the decision. "We're moving forward," Smart said. "We respect Jamie, I respect Jamie. He's done a tremendous job. I respect any kid that chooses to opt out." The UGA campus shut down in March and Newman and Georgia players didn't return for more than 90 days to begin workouts. By then, Daniels had announced he was transferring to Georgia. Daniels, the former-five-star prospect, is coming of a torn ACL sustained in the season opener last year, but Smart said he expects the 2018 Trojans starter, who received an NCAA waiver to play, to be medically given the OK to play in the Sept. 26 opener at Arkansas. "We expect him to be cleared by the first game," Smart said. "But that's not a complete certainty." - Athens Daily Banner

Before JT Daniels hopped on a plane to Georgia, Adam Dedeaux worked with the quarterback on his throwing mechanics and footwork in Huntington Beach, Calif., as he continued to rehab from an ACL injury he sustained in Southern Cal's season opener last year. He also got a window into Daniel's mindset heading to a program where Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman arrived in January. "When we had conversations, I know he was like, As long as I'm healthy, I'm going to go compete and if I don't win the job right away, I'm just going to keep working," said Dedeaux, a quarterbacks coach. "If something happens then I'll be ready for my opportunity."

Something certainly happened Wednesday. Two and a half weeks into the Bulldogs' preseason practices, Newman opted out of playing this season due to what he called "uncertainties," of the pandemic and said he will begin preparing for the 2021 NFL draft. Offensive coordinator Todd Monken last week called it an "open competition," to replace Jake Fromm as starter and Daniels, who the NCAA granted a waiver in mid-July to play this season, felt he was in the fight for the job. "He was not far behind," said Dedeaux, who like Daniels graduated from Mater Dei High and whose clients include Matt Ryan, Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford. "If you had said Newman didn't opt out and JT won the job, that wouldn't have surprised me frankly." - Athens Daily Banner

UGA could have intrigue for the starting quarterback job in 2020 if the college football season is played. Southern Cal quarterback transfer JT Daniels revealed Monday he has gained immediate eligibility to play without having to sit out a season. "Thank you to the NCAA for granting me immediate eligibility and allowing me to play football this fall," Daniels tweeted. "I will not comment on the waiver or transfer, but look forward to a great 2020 season with my teammates."

Daniels gives Georgia coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Todd Monken two players who have started for power five conference programs at quarterback to choose from. Wake Forest graduate transfer quarterback Jamie Newman still probably will be considered the favorite. He joined the program in January and took part in offseason workouts for a couple of months. Daniels didn't arrive in Athens until June. Newman is viewed as a possible early round NFL draft pick next year and offers dual-threat capabilities, but Daniels will at the least provide a proven backup and quality depth. - Athens Daily Banner

Georgia's quarterback competition got a lot more interesting on May 29, when former five-star recruit and Southern Cal quarterback J.T. Daniels announced his intention to transfer to the Bulldogs. Daniels started 11 games for the Trojans as a true freshman in 2018, passing for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He missed most of 2019 after suffering a knee injury in the season opener.

An immediate eligibility waiver is still needed for Daniels to be able to see the field in 2020. The depth chart listed above assumes no waiver for Daniels. If he receives one, he will vie for the starting job with Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman, who had been assumed to be the starter heading toward the fall. An approved waiver means three remaining years of eligibility, while a denial means two. Daniels' decision to transfer will affect the Georgia quarterback room not just this season, but for years to come. - Macon Telegraph

Georgia has picked up another high-profile transfer to compete for its starting quarterback job, landing former Southern California starter JT Daniels. Daniels started for the Trojans in 2018, but lost his job to Kedon Slovis after going down last season with a knee injury. He announced Thursday that he’s heading to Georgia, which is seeking a replacement for three-year starter Jake Fromm.

Daniels, who entered the transfer portal in April, will battle for playing time with graduate transfer Jamie Newman, who left Wake Forest to play his final college season with a program that has been a consistent national contender under coach Kirby Smart. Daniels was among the top quarterback recruits in the nation when he left Orange County’s Mater Dei High School early to join the Trojans two years ago. He started for USC as a freshman, passing for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during an inconsistent season for him and the Trojans. Coach Clay Helton dismissed several offensive assistants after a 5-7 finish - the school’s first losing season since 2000. - AP College Football

When JT Daniels entered the NCAA transfer portal last month, the former five-star quarterback left the door open for a return to USC if immediate eligibility weren't possible elsewhere. But even after the NCAA tabled a possible one-time transfer exception last week, Daniels still made his exit from USC official. Daniels announced Thursday he will transfer from USC to Georgia after two seasons with the Trojans. With no transfer exception available, the former Gatorade National High School Player of the Year must presumably apply for a traditional transfer waiver if he has any hope of playing for the Bulldogs next season.

His transfer marks the end of an up-and-down tenure at USC, where he enrolled in the spring of 2018 after skipping his final season at Santa Ana Mater Dei High. Even before his arrival, the five-star local recruit was lauded as a savior for a struggling football program. But after winning the starting job as a freshman, Daniels piloted an inconsistent USC offense to a 5-7 record. He threw for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Daniels won the job again as a sophomore, beating out impressive incoming freshman Kedon Slovis. Under new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, Daniels appeared primed for a breakout season until just before halftime of the Trojans' season opener, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The injury ended his season, and eventually his tenure in Los Angeles. - Orange County Register

JT Daniels hasn't thrown a pass for USC since tearing his ACL in the 2019 opener, clearing the way for Slovis. And the former Mater Dei High star might never throw another pass for the Trojans. The 2018 starter entered the transfer portal last month to explore his options with other schools. But Daniels and head coach Clay Helton have kept the door open for the possibility of the the redshirt sophomore staying at USC if he doesn't like any of the other possibilities. The fact that Daniels could have to sit out a season after the NCAA postponed the one-time transfer waiver could play a big role in his decision. - Orange County Register

Once hailed as USC's next great quarterback, JT Daniels is now in search of a new home. The former Santa Ana Mater Dei High signal caller, who started for USC as a freshman in 2018, will enter the NCAA transfer portal, the school announced Thursday. The decision, according to a person close to the situation, was made in anticipation of a potential NCAA decision on a one-time transfer exception, which, if passed, would offer Daniels immediate eligibility for the 2020 season. If Daniels were still required to sit out next season, USC is optimistic that he could return. In a statement, the quarterback left that possibility on the table. "I love this university, coaching staff, and team," Daniels said. "To me it is in my best interest to explore all my options going into the 2020 season. I will remain in contact with the coaching staff through the process. USC remains one of my options, and that door has remained open for me."

Daniels had been the centerpiece of USC's future plans on offense. He ran away with the starting job as a freshman and won it again as a sophomore, as USC transitioned to a pass-heavy, air raid offense. But plans for a standout sophomore campaign were derailed after just two quarters in the season opener against Fresno State. Daniels tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, ending his season and paving the way for freshman Kedon Slovis. Slovis proceeded to shatter USC records, on his way to arguably the finest freshman season for a quarterback in school history. - Los Angeles Times

Southern California quarterback J.T. Daniels will miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament and the meniscus in his right knee during the Trojans' opener. Coach Clay Helton confirmed the severity of his sophomore starter's injury Sunday night. USC (1-0) plans to start freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis against Stanford (1-0) at the Coliseum on Saturday. Daniels will redshirt this season, Helton said. With an estimated nine to 12 months of recovery from surgery, Daniels could be ready for camp next year. "He will be missed, but we will have to move forward, and we wish him nothing but the best," Helton said. "We know he's going to be back."

Daniels was hurt when his leg twisted while he was being tackled on a blitz with 27 seconds left in the first half of USC's 31-23 victory over Fresno State. Daniels started 11 games last season for USC's first losing team since 2000, and he won a four-way competition for the starting job last month in camp. Daniels had an inconsistent freshman year after arriving at USC as the nation's top quarterback recruit, but Helton and new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell believed Daniels would thrive in Harrell's version of the Air Raid offense. Daniels looked mostly sharp before his injury against the Bulldogs, going 25 of 34 for 215 yards and a touchdown, but also throwing a goal-line interception. "There were really some glimpses of what this offense can be, and it really excited me and our staff," Helton said. - AP College Football

Sophomore quarterback J.T. Daniels will start at Southern California for the second straight season. Coach Clay Helton announced Tuesday that Daniels, who started 11 games as a freshman for the Trojans, won a four-man competition for the job over freshman Kedon Slovis, redshirt junior Matt Fink and redshirt sophomore Jack Sears. With Helton hiring a new offensive coordinator in Graham Harrell to run the "Air Raid" spread offense, the embattled head coach decided to give all four quarterbacks a chance to compete. Daniels came out on top for the second straight training camp.

"We've had 30 practices, both 15 in spring and 15 in camp, and we feel confident where we are right now. We felt like we needed to move forward and allow more reps for the guys that are going to be in the one and two position, so we're going to name J.T. as the starting quarterback," Helton said Tuesday. Daniels completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during an erratic first season as USC finished 5-7, its first losing season since 2000. - AP College Football
