Oregon and Iowa were the big movers in The Associated Press college football poll after road wins over top-10 opponents. The Ducks' victory over Ohio State earned them a promotion from No. 12 to No. 4. Another impressive defensive performance by Iowa in the Cy-Hawk Trophy game pushed the Hawkeyes from No. 10 to No. 5. Arkansas, coming off a home win over old Southwest Conference rival Texas, was rewarded with its first appearance in the AP Top 25 in five years, coming in at No. 20. Alabama remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25, which is presented by Regions Bank. The Crimson Tide received 60 of the 63 first-place votes. Georgia, which picked up the other three first-place votes, stayed at No. 2. Oklahoma was No. 3 and followed by Oregon, Iowa, Clemson, Texas A&M, Cincinnati, Ohio State and Penn State. - AP College Football

McKinley had 41 tackles with two pass breakups, a forced fumble, recovered fumble and interception last season and if he hadn't missed time due to a targeting penalty, would've done even more. His football IQ is invaluable at the position and with new st arters coming in at boundary corner and boundary safety, vital to Oregon's defense. McKinley will make the calls in the backfield and cover the most ground. "He's a coach on the field," safeties coach Marcel Yates said. "He's doing a good job with him be ing here and playing so much of not being - it's easy for a young man like him to say, 'OK I've been here I don't want to work hard.' For him he comes out every day and he works hard. He's learning the defense still but he knows it the best probably out of anybody in the room. That's always good to have somebody on the sideline helping us out." His size isn't a detriment but if McKinley were 2-3 inches taller he'd offer that much more by way of coverage. - The Oregonian

Oregon completed its fifth spring football practice Saturday, which is one more than the 2020 Ducks squeezed in before the pandemic shut everything down. Coach Mario Cristobal would still like to see a lot more before unveiling a quarterback depth chart. "Trying to get quarterback pecking order information out of me is like Fort Knox-type stuff," Cristobal said after Saturday's full-pad practice in Autzen Stadium. "So I'll hang onto that for a little bit longer and try to feed it out as it gets a little bit more clear." The "quarterback" of Oregon's secondary is already clearly defined.Verone McKinley, a safety known for his thorough film study and knack for making big plays, is the leader on the back end of a defense that features All-American Kayvon Thibodeaux at the line of scrimmage and Isaac Slade-Matautia and Noah Sewell at inside linebacker. "I feel like I'm a general back there. I've got to be the guy," McKinley said. "I feel like I have that responsibility on my shoulders and I put it on my plate in order to make sure we're leading this defense." McKinley is a fourth-year sophomore after redshirting in 2018, earning freshman all-American honors from the Football Writers Association of America in 2019 and with eligibility frozen in 202 0 due to the pandemic. During Oregon's 4-3 finish last season, the 5-foot-11, 196-pound McKinley was third on the team with 41 tackles. Slade-Matautia and Sewell finished with 45 tackles each. - Register Guard

Oregon's secondary will have it depth tested at Washington State. Ducks starting field safety Verone McKinley III was called for targeting early in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game against Stanford and disqualified. McKinley, whose helmet hit the fa ce mask of Stanford tight end Tucker Fisk and was called targeting upon a booth review, was disqualified and will miss the first half next week. McKinley had four tackles prior to the penalty. - The Oregonian

OCT 14/WEEK 7 PAC-12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Verone McKinley III, R-Fr., S, Oregon (Carrollton, Texas),...Became just the second FBS freshman with two interceptions in a game to help Oregon hold its fifth consecutive opponent to single-digit points en route 45-3 win over Colorado...It marks the first time since 1958 that the Ducks have held five straight opponents under 10 points...Added a career-high five tackles, including four in the first half, and also tipped another pass that resulted in ano ther Oregon INT...First career interception came on third down in the red zone as was the start of three empty chances in the red zone for Colorado...Returned second INT 53 yards and it resulted in a TD on the next play and a 38-3 lead...Oregon limited i ts fifth consecutive opponent to under 300 total yards and third straight with less than 200 passing yards.
