 Justyn Ross, Clemson, Player News

  05/13/22 - WR Justyn RossrSr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 210 (DS#35 WR) + More +

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has high hopes for wide receiver Justyn Ross after the former Tiger was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. "I mean, he might be the greatest free agent ever if he stays healthy," Swinney said Wednesday of Ross. The caveat of health is what caused Ross to go from a potential first- or second-round pick to not hearing his name called at all during the 2022 NFL Draft. That's not supposed to happen after the ad Swinney said only four teams medically cleared Ross, one of which was the Chiefs.

That created an even smaller pool from which to get drafted but provided the Alabama native a better understanding of how his path to the NFL would have to be carved. In addition to the congenital fusion in his spine, the wideout missed the last three games of his final season at Clemson with a foot injury. Ross reportedly chose the Chiefs because of coach Andy Reid and getting to play with a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes. It also doesn't hurt that a former Tiger in Sammy Watkins played in Reid's system in 2018-20. - The State

  12/06/21 - WR Justyn RossrSr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 210 (DS#35 WR) + More +

2021 BRIAN PICCOLO AWARD WINNER: Clemson's Ross caught 112 passes for nearly 1,900 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first two collegiate seasons, but he was diagnosed in March 2020 with a congenital fusion condition of his neck and spine, plus a disc protrusion that ultimately required surgery. The Phenix City, Alabama, native missed the entire 2020 season and began rehab amidst doubts he would ever play football again. Ross battled his way back to again become an integral part of the Tigers' offensive attack this season.

Despite a foot injury that sidelined him for the final two regular-season games, Ross leads the team with 46 receptions for 514 yards and three touchdowns and regained his status as a probable early-round NFL Draft pick. "Justyn Ross is the epitome of the Brian Piccolo Award," said Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. "This is a great, great player who went from being told he was never going to play football again, to maybe there is a 50 percent chance and facing a 17-19 month grueling process. To see him come back and play 10 games and do the things that he did, I am so grateful. "One of the worst days I've experienced as a coach was being there when the doctors told him what was going on and telling him that he may never play again. And one of the best days I've had as a coach was seeing him take the field again for the Tigers and seeing him get that first diving catch. I'm really proud of him and thankful that I had a chance to be part of his journey." - ACC Football

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said leading receiver Justyn Ross will have surgery to fix the stress fracture in his foot then get ready for the NFL draft. Ross will miss Saturday's game against Wake Forest and the season-ending rivalry contest at South Carolina on Nov. 27. Swinney said Wednesday he wasn't sure if Ross would be ready to play in a bowl game, "but he'll be ready to train and do what he needs to do for the (NFL) combine." Ross had the option to play for the Tigers in 2022, but Swinney said he has chosen the NFL. "He doesn't need another season here," Swinney said. "He's going pro." Ross has 46 catches for 514 yards and three touchdowns. He first gained attention as a freshman when he had three catches for 153 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown reception in Clemson's 44-16 national championship victory over Alabama to end the 2018 season. - AP College Football

Clemson will be without leading receiver Justyn Ross for this week's game with No. 13 Wake Forest with a foot injury Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said on Tuesday that Ross will need surgery on his foot. Swinney said Ross had been dealing with stress facture in his foot throughout the season. The coach added, "Amazing that he's been able to play 10 games." Clemson (7-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) closes its home season Saturday against the Demon Deacons (9-1, 6-0), who can clinch the ACC Atlantic Division with a victory. Ross is the latest key offensive player to miss time for the Tigers this season following offensive line starter Matt Bockhorst and tight end Braden Galloway, who are both out with season-ending injuries. Swinney said Ross will need a screw in his foot. He said Ross will likely have surgery this week, although he may wait to see how he feels and possibly play in the season-ending rivalry game with South Carolina on Nov. 27. - AP College Football

  08/21/21 - WR Justyn RossrSr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 210 (DS#35 WR) + More +

After Clemson wrapped its second and final scrimmage Thursday, coach Dabo Swinney could happily report his team had made it through the grindstone. Sixteen straight practices, including a pair of 11-on-11 fracases, and the Tigers were just about healthy heading into game prep for the opener with Georgia. That's one big sigh of relief. But the biggest exhale of all was reserved for one player. Clemson receiver Justyn Ross, working his way back from a neck and spine issue that wiped away his 2020 season - and nearly his football career - found himself in the tense but inevitable situation that everyone had been waiting for.

Ross caught three passes. Three times, he found himself at the mercy of a tackler. All three times, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound junior came out OK. "Popped right back up," Swinney said. "And he took a couple of good hits. He just popped right back up and just went on to the next play. "It really couldn't have worked out any better, as far as what I needed and what he needed. He's been ready to go since last spring, in his mind, as far as ready to go play. But it's been a long process. And today was finally the day." It's been quite a wait. It was back in the spring of 2020 when a congenital fusion was discovered in his neck, along with a bulging disc that needed repair. Coming into fall camp - more than a year removed from surgery - Ross was cleared to play. But he missed the first week of camp to COVID-19 protocol. - Charleston Post Courier

  08/13/21 - WR Justyn RossrSr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 210 (DS#35 WR) + More +

It was good news, bad news for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and star receiver Justyn Ross. Doctors just cleared the 6-4, 205-pound junior to play football, a sigh of relief for Swinney and Tigers fans after a neck issue put his career in doubt. "But, unfortunately, on another note, I hate y'all won't get to see him practice today, because he's in COVID protocol," Swinney said Friday before Clemson's first practice of fall camp. "But he's waited 18 months to get to this point, and I think he'll actually be able to rejoin us next Friday in time to go to the reserve and hang out on the lake." Swinney said that last bit with a smirk, because the good news in this instance clearly outweighs the bad. Ross will be back.

But the bad news was a reminder of where college football and the country, as a whole, still finds itself as another football season gets underway. The pandemic isn't over. As the delta variant surges case counts across the country, Swinney and his group still have to be cautious. Swinney quipped multiple times, "The best ability is availability," a well-worn phrase. Clemson's headman applied the saying to a couple of athletes who have been held back by nagging issues, such as receiver Frank Ladson Jr. and cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. But the old cliche also related to players doing whatever is in their control to better the odds of not contracting the virus. A case of COVID-19 could knock them out of practice, or, down the line, games. - Charleston Post Courier

Even with losing wide receivers like Amari Rodgers and Cornell Powell, the Tigers undoubtedly reloaded at wide receiver. The first piece of good news was that redshirt junior Justin Ross had been medically cleared, though he wasn't able to practice Friday due to COVID-19 protocol. The receivers group still came out and performed well. Ajou Ajou, EJ Williams, Frank Ladson and Joseph Ngata displayed speed and athleticism in making catches whether it was from DJ Uiagalelei, Hunter Helms or Will Taylor. Even newer guys like Beaux Collins, who practiced in a green jersey, and Dacari Collins made plays and added to the prospect of a deep wide receiver unit. (Green jerseys mean players can do individual drills without contact to the ground.) It's a challenge for Clemson's defensive backs to cover, but it'll only help them in the long run. "When you line up against a guy like (Ross) or some of the weapons we have there, it definitely makes gameday slower, for sure," Turner said. "Just getting that exposure against that speed and that caliber of player, that caliber of athlete, it makes us better. - Rock Hill Herald

Clemson fans have one more thing for which to cheer. Almost two years after his sophomore season ended, redshirt junior wide receiver Justyn Ross has been medically cleared to play football this season, Tigers head football coach Dabo Swinney announced Friday. Ross is in COVID-19 protocol, however, and won't be at practice until the end of next week at the earliest, Swinney announced. It's been a long time coming for the Alabama native, who learned he had a congenital fusion in his spine last spring. He was born with the condition, but it didn't come to light until he reportedly felt "stinger-like symptoms" during a spring practice in 2020.

An X-ray revealed the spinal fusion and Ross had surgery last June. "Nobody to this point knew that he had that, and he's had no issues his whole career," Swinney said at the time. "Because of the situation when they did this X-ray, it showed up. Very concerned. And he had a little bit of a bulging disc as well. And that is an issue. "There's been many people play football with a surgical fusion. That happens a lot of times. But we don't know of one that's had a surgical and a congenital issue." One of the results of the surgery was Ross having to sit out of the 2020 season. This came on the heels of the Tiger recording 1,865 yards on 112 catches with 17 touchdowns over 29 games played, including 14 starts, in his first two years. - The State

Clemson is returning a deep group of wide receivers this year, and Justyn Ross could be the proverbial cherry on top. The Tigers have yet to announce the redshirt junior's medical clearance, though it's expected that Ross will get the green light soon. The anticipation of Ross getting back onto the field has been building, and no one is feeling that more than the man himself. Ross has been chomping at the bit since spring - where he was limited to non-contact practice - according to Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham.

Summer reports from player-led practices indicate he's back to form. "The guys talk, 'I mean, coach, we can't guard him,' " Grisham recalled players telling him about Ross. "We can't guard him, one-on-ones. I can't wait to see him back out there competing." Ross sat out the 2020 season after undergoing spinal surgery due to a congenital fusion. In the two years prior, he amassed 1,865 yards and 17 touchdowns on 112 receptions over 29 career games with 14 starts. - The State

Ross sat out of the 2020 season after having surgery due to a congenital spine fusion. In 2019, the last time he was on the field competitively, he started every game and totaled 865 yards and eight scores on a team-best 66 receptions. As a freshman, the Phenix City, Alabama native also reached 1,000 receiving yards, making him one of only four Tigers wide receivers to achieve the feat in the past five years. Ross was eager to get reps during the spring, but Grisham, going into his second season as the Tigers' full-time wide receivers coach, adhered to the rules of waiting for medical clearance.

"He was like, 'Coach, man, let me compete in the spring, "Grisham said of Ross, who has built back up a good portion of muscle that he lost last year. "I'm like, 'I will lose my job if I let you get a rep of one-on-ones and I love my job and my family too much to do that." Instead, the redshirt junior completed RVA (routes versus air) and worked on perfecting the timing of his routes. That wasn't just limited to reps in the slot, either. Ross possesses the ability to make an impact everywhere. "He's a big-body guy, but he can get in and out of his breaks like he's a 6-footer," Grisham said, "so that's what excites you is that he's so dynamic that you can do a lot of things with him." - The State

Justyn Ross became the first known Clemson athlete to utilize the new name, image and likeness bill on Thursday morning. Hours after the law went into effect, the Tigers' wide receiver took to social media to reveal his new partnership with a company called The Players Trunk to create his own merchandise. "Stay tuned throughout the year for more!!!" Ross tweeted. The photo included Images of a gray hoodie and T-shirt with Ross's name and image of him in an orange and white uniform. According to information released by Clemson on Wednesday night, athletes are prohibited from using the institution's intellectual property, which includes its logo. The colors aren't trademarked by Clemson, of course, and since there are no other indications that the image is affiliated with the school, Ross is legally able to use the image. - The State

  04/03/21 - WR Justyn RossrSr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 210 (DS#35 WR) + More +

Justyn Ross has experienced the highs and lows during his time in the Clemson football program. The highs included a pair of 100-yard games in the postseason as the Tigers won the 2019 national championship. The lows included season-ending surgery that has kept the junior receiver out of action for more than a year. But Ross is getting closer to a full-time return. He was allowed to practice late in the 2020 season last year and has been on the field for spring practice. Ross had a virtual meeting with his doctors last week and has to go to Pittsburgh in June where he hopes to get the go-ahead for full contact for the 2021 season.

"A year ago I didn't think I would put on pads again," Ross said Wednesday. "So I'm grateful. I'm taking advantage of every rep I get...I realize how quick the game could be taken away from me. Like my grandma told me, I put everything in God's hands and went and did everything the doctors and coaches told me to do...I will be ready to play any time they tell me." Ross led Clemson in receiving yards with 1,000 as a freshman in 2018. He led Clemson with 66 receptions in 2019 and was likely going to to be a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft before the injury. Ross announced in January he would come back for another year. - The State

  03/03/21 - WR Justyn RossrSr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 210 (DS#35 WR) + More +

If things go according to plan, Justyn Ross will be back for Clemson in 2021. And he'll be at a new position: slot wide receiver. Many expected the 6-4, 205-pound Ross to slide in as the team's boundary receiver, but coach Dabo Swinney on Monday said otherwise. Ross is expected to be ready for the start of the campaign after missing all of last season following surgery for a congenital fusion in his spine. "We're back in business there at wideout," coach Dabo Swinney said. "Justyn can play all three spots, and he will, but if we played today and he was cleared to play, he would start at that slot."

The decision is as much a testament to Ross' versatility as Clemson's depth, Swinney said. He labeled Ross and juniors Frank Ladson and Justyn Ross - all of whom were limited in 2020 - as "elite," and he wants all three on the field. Ross's unique skillset allows the coaching staff to make that happen. "His lateral quickness and explosiveness in and out of cuts, that's one of Justyn's gifts," Swinney said. "He's (former Clemson slot receiver Hunter) Renfrow-esque when it comes to his lateral ability. - Charleston Post Courier

Clemson's Justyn Ross has made his decision on his future. The star receiver will return to school, he announced on Twitter Thursday night. Ross is coming back to Clemson after missing this past season due to a congenital fusion in his spine. Ross was named a freshman All-American in 2018 after catching 46 passes for a team-high 1,000 receiving yards. In 2019, he led the Tigers in catches with 66 for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. The former Phenix City High (Alabama) star was expected to be a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft before being injured. - The State

Justyn Ross must feel like he broke a tackle and is headed for the end zone. Ross, a standout receiver at Clemson and top NFL prospect who has missed this season with a spine condition, got "positive" news from his specialist earlier this week and seems to be on track to continue with his football career. A junior from Phenix City, Alabama, he was honorable mention All-ACC last season after a team-high 66 receptions for 865 yards and eight touchdowns.

It was discovered during summer drills that he had congenial fusion on his spine, an abnormality that is present at birth. He felt some numbness while making a catch. After intense diagnosis, he had surgery on June 5. Ross went to Pittsburgh on Tuesday to see his specialist, Dr. David Okonkwo, who is one of the leading neuroscientists in the world. Ross went through further testing there but did not immediately hear a diagnosis for his future. - Greenville News

WR Justyn Ross (ESPN's Chris Fowler said Ross may be back for ACC title game): "Maybe he knows something I don't know. That'd be awesome...but I don't think that's the case. We're just hoping that they'll clear him to play football. But I don't have any expectation that he would be able to play this year. He thinks he can play. It won't be because Justyn doesn't want to play. That's for sure. But I am excited about him having his appointment this week and hope everybody will keep him in their prayers. Because this will be a big week for him as he goes up to Pittsburgh and gets the next steps for him. We're just really praying for the best."   For this week's game, the only players who have officially been ruled out are defensive end Xavier Thomas, receiver Justyn Ross and tight end Luke Price. Clemson is hoping to get Thomas back for a portion of this season after he battled COVID-19 and strep throat this summer. Ross and Price are both out for the year after suffering season-ending injuries. Starting defensive end Justin Foster and backup running back Lyn-J Dixon are among the other players who missed time during fall camp. Their status for this weekend has yet to be revealed. The loss of Foster for an extended period of time would be a big one for the Tigers as Thomas, Foster and Logan Rudolph split time starting at defensive end last season. Rudolph gave up football this offseason to focus on acting. "Justin has been here every day and is working hard and getting better," Swinney said last week. "He has been limited but hopefully he's making some good progress and will be with us here soon." - The State

Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross had surgery Friday for a congenital fusion in his spine that will keep him off the field this upcoming season. Ross said on social media that the operation "went great" and he was ready to get to work to return to football. Ross was hurt in March during spring workouts with what looked like a shoulder injury. But X-rays revealed that two vertebrae in his spine were fused and he had a bulging disc, according to Clemson coach Dabo Swinney.

Ross is a 6-foot-4 sophomore from Phenix City, Alabama led the Tigers with 66 catches last season for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. He was expected to become Clemson's featured receiver after Tee Higgins left for the NFL after this past season. Ross first made his mark as a freshman, catching 12 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns in Clemson's two College Football Playoff games on the way to the national championship. Ross was projected as a top-10 selection in the next NFL draft before the injury. - AP College Football

Clemson star receiver Justyn Ross will miss the 2020 season, and his football career could be in jeopardy. Ross has a "congenital fusion" in his spine that he's had since birth, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told reporters Monday. Ross is slated to have surgery on Friday. The condition was discovered on an X-ray after Ross felt stinger-like symptoms during spring practice. "Nobody to this point knew that he had that, and he's had no issues his whole career. Because of the situation when they did this X-ray, it showed up. Very concerned," Swinney said. "And he had a little bit of a bulging disc as well. And that is an issue. There's been many people play football with a surgical fusion. That happens a lot of times. "But we don't know of one that's had a surgical and a congenital" issue, Swinney said.

Ross missed Clemson's final two workouts of the spring - a practice on March 11 and a scrimmage on March 13. The March 13 workout was Clemson's final one of the spring as the final six spring practices were canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Phenix City, Alabama native had 66 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He was first on the team in receptions and second in yards. - The State

Clemson receiver Justyn Ross, considered a first-round NFL draft pick next spring, will miss the upcoming college season due to a spinal condition uncovered after he was hurt at practice in March. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said Ross will have surgery on Friday because of a congenital fusion of vertebrae he has had since birth. Ross also has a bulging disc. The condition was found after Ross apparently hurt his shoulder during a spring practice session before workouts were shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. "I was shocked," Swinney said.

Ross is a 6-foot-4, 205-pound sophomore from Phenix City, Alabama, who led the Tigers with 66 catches a year ago. He first gained national attention as a freshman in Clemson's 44-16 national championship win over Alabama in January 2019 when he had six catches for 153 yards including a 74-yard TD. Swinney said Ross seemed fine after his injury and told the coach he felt good at dinner that night.   Clemson receiver Justyn Ross was limited during spring practice with "some stinger symptoms lingering," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced in March. Now, the Tigers leading receiver from 2019 is set to have surgery in June related to those stinger symptoms. "Justyn is doing great but is going to have surgery in early June. Testing was delayed a bit as a function of recent health protocols," a Clemson official said Thursday. "Coach may provide additional information down the road but I don't have any additional specifics to offer at this point." Ross missed Clemson's final two workouts of the spring - a practice on March 11 and a scrimmage on March 13. The March 13 workout was Clemson's final one of the spring as the final six spring practices were canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Phenix City, Alabama native had 66 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He was first on the team in receptions and second in yards. - The State

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney released a video Wednesday afternoon that covered a variety of topics, including his message to Tigers fans and South Carolina residents during this time of uncertainty. The comments were Swinney's first since Clemson's program split up for spring break nearly two weeks ago. Staff members and players were unable to return as Clemson's campus was shut down, and all classes will remain online through the end of the semester.

Swinney encouraged Clemson fans and South Carolina residents to take the coronavirus seriously and do what they can to keep it from continuing to spread. "Stay clean, wash your hands a lot. Be very mindful of where you are. Hopefully you're home safe. But if you are out stay out of groups and try to stay away from sick people and those types of things," Swinney said. "And if you are sick, stay home for sure and we can kick this thing in the tail and get back to our lives here at some point." Swinney added that he is "very hopeful" football will be played this fall but also made it clear that there are other things going on in the country that are more important right now. - The State

Clemson receiver Justyn Ross is being held out of contact work in practice because of "some stinger symptoms lingering," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced following Wednesday's practice. Ross did not practice Monday and was held out of Wednesday's scrimmage. He did attend the scrimmage but is being held out of contact because "they're just trying to be precautionary with him." The junior had 66 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He was first on the team in catches and second in yards. Ross had 1,000 yards as a freshman and is expected to take an even more prominent role with Tee Higgins moving on to the NFL. Swinney is hopeful Ross will be back to practice when the Tigers return from spring break March 23. "Even though he's fine now they want to make sure that there's no bigger issue or anything like that," Swinney said. "So hopefully when we get back we'll have more information at that time." - The State
