It seems like Auburn safety Smoke Monday's college career has nearly gone by in the blink of an eye. Monday told reporters on Friday it seemed like just yesterday he was one of the newcomers trying to fit in as a true freshman in 2018. Now, Monday finds himself as the most-experienced member of the Auburn secondary and among the true leaders on either side of the ball. That transition may have come quickly for Monday, but the senior is embracing his new role with open arms. "It feels weird because I had a lot of guys here when I first got here that taught me a lot. I didn't think I would be in this position so quickly, but by learning so much from the other guys who were here - that were older than me and taught me so much - it just feels good to be th at older guy in the room," Monday said. "My goal is just to basically teach them everything that I've learned since I've been here and just play my ball. Just do my job. By doing my job, I can help a lot of guys do their job."Monday's status as on e of the examples Auburn's new coaches want others to follow is a hard-earned one. Monday stood out in the back end of the Tigers' defense in 2020 and earned second team All-SEC honors after racking up 73 tackles, five defended passes, one interception a nd one forced fumble. He delivered his share of big plays last fall, which included a game-changing 100-yard pick-six against Tennessee on Nov. 21. A lot has changed around the Auburn program since last December when Gus Malzahn and his staff were fired, but Monday explained he did his part to keep a level head throughout it all. He pointed out his coaches since rec ball have taught him that change is inevitable; besides, he had teammates watching how he navigated the situation. - Opelika-Auburn News

Replacing a pair of proven veterans like Sherwood and Peters isn't easy. Sherwood started 10 games last season and finished third on the team in tackles, while Peters appeared in all 11 games with three starts and had incredibly versatility in the second ary and on special teams. But the return of Monday, who also considered leaving early for the NFL, is big for the back end of Auburn's defense. Monday has been a major contributor since Day 1 on campus, when he earned a spot in the safety rotation as a f reshman. He parlayed that into a starting job last year and finished fourth on the team in tackles. Now he'll be the veteran presence at safety for Auburn, and the Tigers will need to lean on his experience on the back end this offseason. - Birmingham Ne ws

Smoke Monday returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown and No. 23 Auburn overcame a slow start to beat Tennessee 30-17 on Saturday night. Auburn (5-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) fell behind 10-0 to Tennessee (2-5, 2-5) and dealt with injuries to star running back Tank Bigsby and its two starting offensive tackles. The Tigers were playing their first game in 21 days after a scheduled off week and the postponement of a game at Mississippi State. Bo Nix completed 17 of 26 passes for 220 yards, w ith a 54-yard touchdown to Anthony Schwartz and his first career interception in a home game. Tennessee's Jarrett Guarantano started strong, but finished with only 156 yards of passing and the interception return for a touchdown that gave Auburn a two-sc ore lead late in the third quarter. Tennessee had its best offensive outing in weeks, yet struggled after halftime. When Noah Igbinoghene declared for the draft, the only starter in the secondary who could return as a senior disappeared from the 2020 roster, leaving a quartet of rising juniors as the most experienced defensive backs on the team. Luckily for Auburn, Ja mien Sherwood, Roger McCreary, Christian Tutt and Smoke Monday each played in all 13 games of 2019 and have experience to draw on. They combined for 131 tackles, two sacks and four interceptions. Sherwood and Monday also played in all 13 games of their f reshmen seasons, while McCreary gained seven games of experience and Tutt appeared in 11 games."We were put in the fire real fast," Monday said. "So I feel like it's better for us to be the leaders we are today and we can lead the defense in a rea lly good way this year." With safeties Jeremiah Dinson and Daniel Thomas and cornerbacks Javaris Davis and Igbinoghene gone, Monday said he's had to step up "in a big way." "I know a lot of the young guys are depending on me to be a leader and show them the way," Monday said. Others are moving into those vacated leadership roles, too. Sherwood is a lot quieter and doesn't say much, Monday said, but he's become a leader through his actions. Despite his lack of words, he has the ability to get the team's energy up. - Birmingham News
