  03/04/22 - OG Darian KinnardSr/2022, Kentucky, 6-5, 328 (DS#6 OG) + More +

Former Kentucky football offensive tackle Darian Kinnard is enjoying the opportunity to show NFL teams his full personality in interviews this week and the scouting combine. Letting his guard down during the predraft process has led Kinnard to wade into controversial political opinions. During interviews at the Senior Bowl in February, Kinnard wore a sweatshirt with a picture of the White House over the words "Traitor Joe's." Text above the image said, "Selling away your freedoms one at a time." Asked about the hoodie during the Thursday morning media session at the combine, Kinnard said there was no conscious decision to make a statement by wearing the shirt. "Part of my closet, so I wore it," Kinnard said. "That's how it goes." Kinnard said NFL teams he has met with in Indianapolis have not asked about the hoodie, but he made no attempt to walk back from the sentiment expressed by the shirt during his media session.

Asked later in the news conference about his experience working out during the pandemic-induced shut down during the spring and summer of 2020, Kinnard waded back into the political discussion. "Really, the pandemic experience, I felt like it wasn't as much as a crisis as I think it needed to be," Kinnard said. "I think it was more of a scare tactic, but at the end of the day that's my personal opinion. I felt like I still could have gone about my daily life. Still was out doing things, still was out going to the park, still was able to talk to people without being scared of things. My pandemic experience was kind of cooped up." - Courier Journal

Among Kentucky football players with the potential to profit most off the NCAA new name, image and likeness policy, NFL draft first-round prospect Darian Kinnard would likely be high on the list. But Kinnard has no plans to actively pursue endorsement opportunities this fall. "It's my last year," Kinnard said. "If this came out maybe two years ago, it could have been a good avenue I'd gotten into. With this last year coming up, we all look back at the end of the season and say, 'Man, it flew.' I'm just taking this opportunity to really focus on what I need to do, and NIL can wait until I'm done with college."

Kinnard did not completely close the door to NIL opportunities but confirmed he would "probably not" pursue any deals when asked to clarify his intentions. That does not figure to be the case for most of Kentucky's star players. A handful of Wildcats, including quarterback Will Levis, have signed up for Cameo, a website where fans can pay for personalized video messages from celebrities and athletes. Wide receiver Josh Ali and cornerback Cedrick Dort signed endorsement deals with water company KeenH20. Wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson has already signed with player management company the Virtus Brand. As the season gets closer, endorsement opportunities for standout players seem likely to increase. - Courier Journal

Kentucky is earning some football respect across the Southeastern Conference. Just look at this year's All-SEC preseason media voting results, released Friday. UK was picked to finish third in the Eastern Division, behind Georgia and Florida, the school's highest preseason position since the league went to a divisional format in 1992. The Wildcats were selected by two voters to win the East, and were one of five teams outside of the top challengers - Alabama and Georgia - to receive a single vote to win the SEC championship this fall.

Offensive tackle Darian Kinnard, an All-America player last season, was one of five Wildcats named to the All-SEC squad. He was UK's only First Team representative, and one of three players named on offense. Running back Chris Rodriguez, who led the league in rushing average (6.6 yards per game) last season, and lineman Luke Fortner, a fifth-year senior who has started 23 straight games, were both named to the Third Team offense. - Herald Leader

A second-team Sporting News All-American in 2020, Kinnard considered leaving school early to declare for the 2021 draft but elected to return to school for his senior season, despite reportedly receiving a second-day draft grade. "I know my time is coming, and I've got to be patient with it," Kinnard said after watching his former teammates perform at UK's pro day. Kinnard will move from right tackle to left tackle this fall. Evaluators have projected him as a guard at the NFL level previously, but a strong season at left tackle will only make him more attractive to NFL scouts. - Courier Journal

Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops is entering his ninth season in charge of the Wildcats' football program. Kentucky's football program for the second straight season will not conduct a Blue-White Game at Kroger Field. UK's football players will have a more typical spring football practice regimen, though, the school announced Wednesday. The Wildcats will conduct the first of their 15 practice sessions allowed by the NCAA beginning Tuesday and conclude the spring session in mid-April. This year's spring game will not be played due to Kroger Field's continued operation as a COVID-19 testing and vaccination site. - Herald Leader

Kentucky football's 2021 roster will feature a returning All-American. Right tackle Darian Kinnard announced Monday he will return to school for his senior season instead of entering the NFL draft. A former U.S. Army All-American recruit, Kinnard was a pivotal piece of the offensive line that helped pave the way for a UK offense that ranked fifth in the SEC in rushing yards per game (187.7). A third-team All-American according to the Associated Press, Kinnard has played in 32 games across the last three seasons with 24 consecutive starts at tackle. He graded out at 88% in 10 games this season with 40 knockdown blocks and 138 blocks at the point of attack, according to a UK news release. - Courier Journal

Kinnard will play in this weekend's bowl game but is mulling a decision on whether to enter the NFL Draft. He was one of five underclassmen (the maximum allowed) on whose behalf head coach Mark Stoops solicited pre-draft evaluations from the league, and those official evaluations have not yet been sent back. UK and Kinnard remain in a stage of information-gathering at this point in the process.

"Darian's been very thorough," Stoops said Monday. "He's been trying to talk to as many people as he can. I've tried to get him as much information as I can...I believe Darian will lean heavily on that (NFL) information. I'm not sure. We've had talks. I'm not gonna constantly try to persuade Darian one way or another. My job is to get as much actual facts that I can from real people, from NFL people, and not people just telling him everything he wants to hear, because that's one of the problems that happens with juniors." - Herald Leader
