  12/02/20 - FS *Caden SternsJr/2021, Texas, 6-0, 202 (DS#5 FS) + More +

For the second times in as many days, the Texas football team has lost a longtime starter and team captain. Junior safety Caden Sterns will opt out of the rest of UT's season, a source confirmed to the American-Statesman on Monday. In September, Sterns told reporters that he decided to participate in this coronavirus-shortened season because he had "things to prove." Sterns also stated his desire to win a Big 12 title, but Texas has been essentially eliminated from championship contention even though two games remain on the schedule.

On Sunday, UT offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi announced that he was turning his attention to preparing for the NFL Draft. Most pundits have pegged Cosmi as either a first- or second-round pick. The 6-1, 207-pound Sterns, however, has seen his draft stock drop this year. Sterns remains one of the highest-rated recruits ever signed by Tom Herman's staff at Texas. A five-star talent in the 2018 recruiting cycle, Sterns made an immediate splash upon his arrival in Austin. His freshman year included four interceptions, all-conference honors and semifinalist status for the Jim Thorpe Award. Sterns, though, missed five games due to injuries over his sophomore and junior seasons. Fifty-two tackles and a win-sealing interception against Texas Tech are among the highlights of Sterns' 2020 campaign. - Austin American Statesman

Until the Texas safety picked off Tech quarterback Alan Bowman's fourth-and-14 prayer in overtime, Sterns' biggest moment of the day came on a non-pass interference call on a Tech incomplete pass. But his final-play interception should help him on the home front; two weeks ago, both of his younger brothers had big games at Jones AT&T Stadium as players for Houston Baptist; Josh Sterns had five catches for 209 yards and two touchdowns and Jerreth Sterns had 12 catches for 130 yards and a score in the opening loss to Tech. It was Caden Sterns' first career interception against Tech. - Austin American Statesman

Dozens of University of Texas football players marched with Austin police officers from campus to the state Capitol to honor the memory of George Floyd on Thursday. Many of the players locked arms on the two-mile walk that stopped on the north side of the Capitol, the opposite side of the building from where protesters have gathered for several days. Once there, the group and police officers took a knee for nine minutes to symbolize the amount of time Floyd was detained on the ground by Minneapolis police before he died. "This protest won't just stop here," junior safety Caden Sterns said. "To the white community...if you want change like you say you do, you must change. What I mean is, you must realize, and the oppressor must realize, you are oppressing." The players were joined by coach Tom Herman. "I'm so proud," Herman told the players, urging them to "be agents of change." - AP College Football

With Brandon Jones now headed to the Miami Dolphins, Sterns becomes the de facto leader of the UT secondary. "It's been challenging but right now at the same time, safety is the most important thing, I feel like." Whenever it begins, the Longhorns are expecting big contributions. Being productive at home, far from your workplace, is a state of mind, as Texas safety Caden Sterns will attest. Just because spring football has been canceled doesn't mean the Longhorns aren't getting better. Granted, video preparation isn't the same as being on the field. Still, every day on Zoom is another chance to learn the defense and study together as a team, Sterns figures.

"The biggest thing that allows you to play fast is your mind," Sterns said Tuesday. "You can go out there and run a 4.2, but if you're second-guessing yourself and hesitating, that 4.2 turns into a 4.6 real quick." Just because the weight room's closed doesn't mean you can't get stronger. "Regardless of what you have, milk cartons or bricks," Sterns said strength coach Yancy McKnight will find something to make you better. - Austin American Statesman

  12/01/19 - FS *Caden SternsJr/2021, Texas, 6-0, 202 (DS#5 FS) + More +

Texas coach Tom Herman shook up his staff Sunday, firing defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and demoting offensive coordinator Tim Beck after the Longhorns struggled to a disappointing 7-5 record in a season they were expected to contend for the Big 12 championship. The Longhorns began the season ranked in the Top 10 but are now unranked as they await their bowl destination after losing three of their last five games. Also dismissed was wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Drew Mehringer. Inside receivers coach Corby Meekins will no longer coach but will stay in the program in an administrative role.

Beck will stay on as quarterbacks coach through the bowl game, but his status beyond that was unclear. Herman said he was "very disappointed" in the season and said that 7-5 "will never be our standard at Texas." "I take full responsibility for any and all of our shortcomings and know we need to do a better job coaching across the board," Herman said. "With that said, I do believe the future is very bright." Staff changes were expected. Herman said last week the program was in "full evaluation" mode and signaled several assistants could be let go. - AP College Football

The Texas defense has been severely depleted by injuries and gets a key player back this week in sophomore safety Caden Sterns. An All-Big 12 player last year, Sterns has missed four games with a leg injury and his absence left gaping holes in coverage and run support. - AP College Football

The injury news keeps getting worse for No. 11 Texas and its defense. Coach Tom Herman said Monday the Longhorns have lost two more starters in the secondary for several weeks after getting hurt in a conference-opening win over Oklahoma State: All-Big 12 safety Caden Sterns, the team's leading tackler, is expected to miss the next four weeks with a knee ligament sprain. Cornerback Jalen Green is expected to miss at least that much time with a dislocated shoulder.

Another defensive back, Josh Thompson, is out indefinitely with a broken foot and linebacker Marcus Tillman Jr., will miss the rest of the season with a knee ligament sprain. Texas (3-1, 1-0) is already struggling against the pass. The Longhorns rank No. 100 nationally in pass efficiency defense and No. 96 overall in third down defense. The Longhorns are off this week before traveling to West Virginia on Oct. 5. They play No. 6 Oklahoma, which has one of the top passing offenses in the country, on Oct. 12. - AP College Football
