Thayer Thomas knew the pass wasn't intended for him. Then he realized he had a chance to catch it. "On that play I'm not even a viable option," Thomas said after his leaping catch from Devin Leary on a broken play led to a 79-yard touchdown that helped No. 22 North Carolina State beat Boston College 33-7 on Saturday night. "It's kind of just like a scramble play," Thomas said. "My job is to set the pick for somebody coming underneath me. Devin just went right, he found me and I just had to kind of make a play for him." The game was tied 7-7 with just seconds left in the first half when the Wolfpack ran their kicking unit out to squeeze in a 27-yard field goal before time expired. They then added three touchdowns in the third quarter - two of them off back-to-back BC turnovers - to turn a tie game into a 31-7 blowout.

N.C. State added a safety in the final four minutes to seal its third straight victory. Coach Dave Doeren said he hopes it sends a message to those who doubt whether the Wolfpack (5-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are for real. "I mean, look, I can't control the lack of respect that we seem to get, publicly. We know about it. Out team recognizes that people don't think we're good," he said. "We're going to end up where we're supposed to be at the end of the year, and people will think what they think." Leary threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns, also completing a 40-yard scoring pass on the opening drive on a throw that bounced off the back of the defender before Devin Carter gathered it in. - North Carolina State/AP College Football

Wide receiver Thayer Thomas is also entering his fifth preseason camp. Thomas, who was second on the team in receptions a year ago, has seen plenty of fall practices and can tell when something is different. He noticed something about the first day that could be a good sign of things to come. "I don't ever remember being this clean coming into a fall camp for a first practice," Thomas said. "I don't think we had one turnover, it just seemed like everybody was on the same page, just a veteran group that knows how to practice at this point. Very excited to go from here. We were just happy with how clean it went today."

Thomas credited that cleanliness to a few things. First, having a full spring practice unlike last year helps. The group being so experienced also plays a huge part. The third thing, as Thomas explained, is the team taking care of and trusting each other on the field. "I can trust the defensive guys aren't going to try and take my head off," Thomas said. "Because we know each other's value and importance on this team. We just have good trust on both sides of the ball." N.C. State returns 20 starters and got some surprising returns in super seniors C.J. Riley, Emeka Emezie, Tyrone Riley and Daniel Joseph, all guys who took advantage of an extra year. - Raleigh News Observer

Thayer Thomas had a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter while Max Fisher blocked a fourth-quarter punt to set up another score and help North Carolina State beat Ball State 34-23 on Saturday night. Malik Dunlap recovered Fisher's block, putting the Wolfpack at the Cardinals' 7-yard line. Matthew McKay scored on a keeper three plays later at the 8:41 mark to help the Wolfpack stay in control. "I feel like the special teams the second half really won us the game," Thomas said.

McKay also ran for a second-quarter TD for N.C. State (3-1), which saw its offense slow significantly after halftime. But the Wolfpack turned away the Cardinals' last best push on Chris Ingram's end-zone interception with 3:43 left. Justin Hall and Caleb Huntley ran for scores for Ball State (1-3), which entered with one of the nation's top passing attacks behind Drew Plitt. Plitt threw for 333 yards but failed to connect for a score for the first time this year. "We had a couple of opportunities there that we needed to finish the deal," Ball State coach Mike Neu said, "and we didn't get that done." - North Carolina State/AP College Football
