Diego Guajardo's 34-yard field goal was the only score in the first quarter as South Alabama took a 3-0 lead. The Panthers (7-4, 4-3 Sun Belt Conference) took the lead for good in the second quarter on Destin Coates' 6-yard TD run and Ellington's 5-yard TD toss to Devin Gentry. Barnett's 2-yard TD run was the only score in the third quarter and stretched Georgia State's lead to 21-3. Ellington's 4-yard scoring toss to Roger Carter pushed the Panthers' lead to 28-3 just 7 seconds into the final period. Desmond Trotter had two fourth-quarter TD passes for the Jaguars (1-10, 0-7) -- a 20-yarder to Jalen Wayne and a 52-yarder to Jalen Tolbert. Troy evened it up early in the second quarter and Ellington replied for the Panthers with a 40-yard scoring throw to Aubry Payne. The next Georgia State drive ended quickly when Paige broke for a 65-yard touchdown run on first down, extending the Panthers' lead to 21-7 with 8:14 left in the first half.   Georgia State quarterback Dan Ellington isn't surprised his team is playing so well even if others can't believe it. "Before we even started the season, I think we were predicted to win like four games," he said. "We felt that was disrespect but we knew why we were picked to win four because of the season we had last year." Ellington passed for three touchdowns, Aubry Payne caught the go-ahead score midway through the fourth quarter and Georgia State's defense held on the final drive in a 28-21 victory over Army on Saturday night.

Quavian White picked off quarterback Kelvin Hopkins at the 3-yard line in the closing minute to end Army's last chance and give Georgia State (5-2) its third straight win. It's a big turnaround for a program that went 2-10 last year. The Black Knights (3-4) have dropped three in a row and are under .500 for the first time since the 2015 team went 2-10. Tra Barnett ran 17 times for 108 yards and a TD, and Ellington had 232 yards passing and 39 rushing for the Panthers. Sandon McCoy ran for two Army touchdowns, but Payne's 8-yard TD catch over the middle was the Panthers' second straight score and proved decisive. Roger Carter caught a conversion pass to put the Panthers up 28-21. - Georgia State/AP College Football

WEEK 1 SUN BELT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dan Ellington, Georgia State (Sr., QB, Olive Branch, Miss.),...Georgia State senior quarterback Dan Ellington threw two touchdown passes and ran for the game-clinching score in the fourth quarter to lead the Panthers to a monumental 38-30 victory at Tennessee, the program's first-ever win over a Power Five conference opponent. The senior signal caller passed for 139 yards on 11 completions and rushed for 61 yards.

After completing just one of his first nine attempts, Ellington recovered to go 10-for-13 the rest of the way, including touchdown strikes of 17 yards to wide receiver Cornelius McCoy in the second quarter and six yards to tight end Aubry Payne in the third quarter. Ellington led the Panthers on two 75-yard touchdown drives in the second half to give GSU a 28-23 lead with nine minutes left, and then he scampered for a spectacular 22-yard touchdown run with 4:45 left that essentially clinched the win. He faked a handoff and then eluded several defenders before running into the left corner of the end zone. - Sun Belt Football

Dan Ellington threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third score as 26-point underdog Georgia State upset Tennessee 38-30 on Saturday in one of the first stunners of the college football season. Georgia State (1-0) beat a Power Five opponent for the first time since this Sun Belt Conference school launched its program in 2010. The Panthers' closest call before this had come in 2016, when they lost 23-17 to Wisconsin after leading in the fourth quarter. Tennessee (0-1) suffered one of the more embarrassing setbacks in its history, the latest blow for a storied program attempting to bounce back from two straight losing seasons.

Georgia State was coming off a 2-10 season in which it had lost its last seven games. Only one of those seven losses was decided by less than two touchdowns. But the Panthers outplayed and outworked Tennessee on Saturday. The hard times for Tennessee were evident from a look at the Neyland Stadium stands. Although the announced attendance was 85,503, thousands of fans apparently left at halftime and many others headed for shaded areas, leaving plenty of sections of the 102,455-seat facility virtually empty as Tennessee attempted its comeback. Tra Barnett put Georgia State ahead for good 28-23 when he raced untouched around the right side with 8:56 remaining. Barnett ended up rushing for 95 yards on 21 carries. - AP College Football
