UCF football continues to find talent in the transfer portal, this time getting a commitment from Kennesaw State linebacker Bryson Armstrong Thursday. Armstrong, who was the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, becomes the eighth pl ayer to join the Knights program since the hiring of Gus Malzahn back in February. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder registered 314 career tackles along with 40 tackles for loss and 18.5 sacks in 45 appearances for the Owls. That included 30 tackles, 5.5 tackle s for loss and 1.5 sacks in four games this spring as part of a truncated season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Armstrong was a three-time, first-team All-Big South selection from 2017-19, earning National Freshman of the Year honors in 2017. MARCH 15 BIG SOUTH DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kennesaw State linebacker Bryson Armstrong led the KSU defense with eight tackles (five solo), in addition to 2.5 tackles-for-loss for minus-17 yards, and 1.5 sacks (-13). His effort helped the Owls limit the Buccaneers to 244 yards of offense and just 84 on the ground. Armstrong's first stop behind the line led to a 3rd-and-long play and eventual punt. His first sack was on a third down that forced a punt, and his second sack was for a nine-yard loss on first down. - Big South Football

With the health and well-being of its student-athletes as its top priority, the Big South Conference announced today it is delaying its fall sports seasons with the intent of playing in the spring. This includes the sports of men's and women's cross coun try, football, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball. Additionally, fall competitions in the sports of men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis, and out of season competitions in spring sports have been suspended as well. For the fourth consecutive year, Kennesaw State University has been tabbed the favorite in the Big South conference's annual preseason football poll for the 2020 campaign as voted by the league's head coaches and media panel, it was announced today. The Owls collected eight of the 12 first-place votes and finished with 68 points to become just the second team to earn the league's top preseason ranking four-straight years. Kennesaw State, which reached the FCS Second Round as an at-large qualifier last s eason and was ranked No. 8/13 in the final polls, returns 45 letterwinners, 18 starters and six All-Conference players. KSU went 11-3 last season (5-1 in the Big South) and ranked first in the nation in rushing offense with 342.4 yards per game while ran king fifth in the country with a Big South single-season record 88.4 rushing yards allowed. - Big South Football

Kennesaw State coach Brian Bohannon and five of his players landed spots on the Big South Conference All-Decade team. The team, announced Monday afternoon, was selected primarily from a vote of conference administrators, with 20 percent of the votes cast by fans. 2019 AFCA FCS COACHES' SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: LB Bryson Armstrong, Jr., Kennesaw St.,...The Marietta, Ga., native guided the No. 4 defense in the country with 95 tackles. He earned the 2019 Big South Defensive Player of the Year award after adding 12. 0 tackles-for-loss, 3.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception to his tab. The 2017 Jerry Rice Award winner made a massive impact in the Owls' two postseason games this season, turning in double-digit tackles in each contest. Against Wofford, he fo rced a fumble in the fourth quarter that turned the momentum in the Owls' favor that eventually propelled Kennesaw State into the second round of the FCS Playoffs.In addition to the double-digit tackles games in each playoff game, Armstrong collec ted 13 tackles at Missouri State, 12 against Charleston Southern and 10 versus North Alabama. Against the Lions, the junior lived in the North Alabama backfield and collected 2.5 tackles-for-loss, his season high. His sole interception came against Campb ell, where he returned the turnover for 11 yards en route to a 38-35 win. A finalist for the Buck Buchanan Aw ard as the nation's top defensive player, Armstrong recorded a team-high 73 total tackles during the regular-season -- including 44 solo stops. A member of the nation's fifth-ranked defense, Armstrong has totaled 10.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, one int erception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery this season.
