2021 ALL-SUN BELT FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL - C.J. Brewer, Coastal Carolina (Super Sr., DL - Bowdon, Ga.),...Earning first-team honors for the second consecutive year after picking up third-team recognition in 2019, Brewer was once again a leader up front for the Chants' defensive unit, as the two-time team captain finished the regular season with 47 tackles, 9.5 tackles-for-loss, and 4.5 sacks. He also had one fumble recovery, one interception, six quarterback hurries, and ran a fake punt for a first do wn in the fourth quarter in the win over Troy (Oct. 28). His 9.5 tackles-for-loss on the season rank 12th overall in the Sun Belt, which included 6.5 tackles-for-loss and 3.5 sacks in conference play. - Coastal Carolina Football

Coastal Carolina defensive tackle C.J. Brewer has been named to the 2021 Bronko Nagurski Trophy preseason watch list, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced today. The preseason list includes 90 defensive standouts from 61 schools i n all 10 Division I FBS conferences plus independents on a roster that includes seven returning players from last season's FWAA All-America team, another from the 2019 team, the nation's top four tacklers from a year ago, three of the top seven sack lead ers, and one of the interception leaders. A nominee for the 2021 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for his impact both on and off the field, Brewer continues to garner preseason accolades prior to the 2021 season. The super senior was named to the 2021 Outla nd Trophy preseason watch list today as well and picked up 2021 Athlon Sports Preseason All-America fourth-team honors. - Coastal Carolina Football

The NCAA allowed all fall sports athletes to retain a year of eligibility, so even 2020 redshirt seniors have an opportunity to play another season in 2021. The Chants returned most of their key seniors from 2020. The returning seniors include three of t he four team captains in defensive lineman C.J. Brewer, linebacker Teddy Gallagher and offensive lineman Trey Carter, linebacker Silas Kelly, a 2020 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year, and the long snapper and punter/holder combination of C.J. 2020 ALL-SUN BELT CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM: C.J. Brewer, Coastal Carolina, DL,...Brewer is tied for second on the team and fourth in the Sun Belt with 6.5 sacks this season. He is also third on the team and 10th in the league with 9.0 tackles-for-loss this year. He is fourth on the team with 57 total tackles and has also recorded six quarterback hurries, forced one fumble, and recovered a fumble on the defensive line for CCU. He recorded a career-high 14 tackles, to go along with 3.0 tackles-for-loss and 1 .5 sacks, in the win over Appalachian State, to earn Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. NOV 23 SUN BELT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: C.J. Brewer, Coastal Carolina,...Redshirt senior defensive tackle C.J. Brewer had a career day in the win over Appalachian State last Saturday as he led the Chants to their first-ever win over the Mountaineer s. Brewer totaled a career-high 14 tackles, which is also a team-high this season, and 3.0 tackles-for-loss which matched his team-high of 3.0 tackles-for-loss in the win over Kansas in the season opener on Sept. 12. He also added 1.5 sacks in the win wi th his solo sack coming on a third down on the Mountaineers' last drive of the game. The Coastal defense helped the Chants overcome a 17-9 halftime deficit by holding the Mountaineers to just two field goals over the second half of play. The Chants are n ow 8-0 on the season, the best start by a team in Sun Belt history, and the Chants' best start since moving to FBS in 2017. - Sun Belt Football

Brewer, Coastal Carolina (Jr., DL, Bowdon, Ga.),...Moving into a full-time starting role this season, the redshirt junior defensive tackle finished third on the team with 54 total tackles and 7.5 tackles-for-l oss. He also added 3.0 sacks, eight quarterback hurries, and three pass breakups while lining up for the Chants on the defensive line in all 12 games. Brewer got stronger as the season wore on, as the Georgia native totaled 43 tackles over the eight Sun Belt Conference games, an average of 5.4 per contest. He registered five tackles or more in five contests on the season highlighted by a career-high 13 stops at home versus Georgia State on Oct. 12.
