Projected first-round pick Christian Darrisaw won't be running the 40-yard dash on Friday. Darrisaw told The Roanoke Times on Tuesday he won't be participating in the majority of tests draft prospects are asked to do at NFL combine, and will stick to position drills later this week when scouts and other league personnel travel to Blacksburg. "Looking like position work only right now, still playing it by ear on the bench," Darrisaw said. "[40-yard dash] That's out the window." Top draft prospects normally are put through a series of tests including the 40, shuttle run, three-cone drill, vertical jump, broad jump and bench press at the annual combine in Indianapolis.

The NFL canceled the traditional combine this year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and shifted testing and skill evaluations to the player's pro day. The timing didn't work out for Darrisaw, who had surgery on a core muscle injury in early January. "It was close," Darrisaw said on Tuesday. Darrisaw spent the last nine weeks training at the EXOS facility in Pensacola, Florida, and spent the majority of his time rehabbing an injury that was discovered by a precautionary MRI in December. - Roanoke Times

2020 ALL-ACC FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES/MEDIA): OT - Christian Darrisaw, Virginia Tech, 130,...Darrisaw started 10 of the Hokies' contests at left tackle where he anchored the left side of Tech's offensive line and was part of a blocking unit that helped propel the squad to six 250-yard rushing games. The Hokies registered 27 rushing TDs, the squad's best total in a decade, and also paved the way for RB Khalil Herbert who posted six 100-yard rushing games in 2020. - Virginia Tech Football

Virginia Tech offensive lineman Christian Darrisaw is headed to the NFL. Many NFL draft analysts are projecting the 6-foot-5, 314-pound junior to be a first round pick. The junior posted a lengthy message to fans on social media outlining his decision on Friday. Darrisaw only missed two games in his career - he started 34 of the team's last 36 games the last three years - and was named honorable mention All-ACC in 2019. Former wide receiver Holmon Wiggins was instrumental in bringing Darrisaw to the attention of Tech's coaching staff. "It got to a point where I was like this dude is a no-brainer," Wiggins told The Roanoke Times in 2018. "We knew he was going to be a little green from the standpoint of playing the position, but he's big, he's athletic, he's strong and when he starts to figure it out it can be scary how good he can be."

After a brief stint at Fork Union, Darrisaw arrived in Blacksburg for the 2018 season and immediately earned the starting job. He shut down talented Florida State defensive end Brian Burns in his debut. Burns finished second in the league that year with 10 sacks. Tech's staff continually praised Darrisaw's consistency and his toughness. "He has been an absolute warrior," Fuente said earlier this season. "He basically played over a half a year on one foot a couple years ago." - Roanoke Times
