Jatarvious Whitlow, Western Illinois, Player News

Western Illinois' football season opener at South Dakota has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues in the WIU program. The teams were scheduled to meet in Vermillion, South Dakota, on Feb. 19. The game was rescheduled for April 17 at the DakotaDome. Western Illinois plays in the Championship Subdivision Missouri Valley Conference, which postponed its football season last fall because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each team is playing eight games this spring. - AP College football

Sources have informed AL.com that Whitlow is transferring to Western Illinois, an FCS program in the Missouri Valley Conference. Word is that Whitlow has already enrolled at Western Illinois. Whitlow, who entered the NCAA transfer portal in February, was Auburn’s starting running back each of the last two seasons. The Lafayette, Ala. native ran for 763 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore last season. - AL.com

Auburn running back JaTarvious "Boobee" Whitlow has entered the NCAA's transfer portal. Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said Wednesday that Whitlow is "looking for a fresh start somewhere else." Whitlow led the Tigers in rushing the past two seasons, totaling 1,550 yards and 16 touchdowns. He had 763 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore while missing the Arkansas game and seeing limited action against LSU following knee surgery. Sophomore D.J. Williams leads the returnees after gaining 400 yards last season. Auburn also signed four-star running back Tank Bigsby in December. Bigsby was the No. 4-rated running back and No. 39 overall prospect according to the 247Sports composite index of recruiting rankings. Mark-Antony Richards redshirted as a freshman after suffering a right leg injury in preseason camp. - AP College Football

Auburn's defense held Samford to 114 yards and forced four turnovers, JaTarvious Whitlow scored twice, and the No. 16 Tigers tuned up for the Iron Bowl with a 52-0 victory Saturday at rain-drenched Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn forced and recovered a fumble on a fourth-and-4 on Samford's opening drive, the first of three turnovers and a trio of three-and-outs across Samford's first six possessions. For the game, the Tigers also had 13 tackles for loss and held Samford to 2 yards per play, 2 of 13 on third down as Auburn's defensive starters were benched a few minutes into the third quarter. Samford had scored in 213 straight games.

As the rain increased, so, too, did Auburn's offensive production. After a seven-point first quarter in which they struggled to convert third downs and had a 43-yard field goal blocked, the Tigers had 193 yards of offense and 24 points in the second. Whitlow and D.J. Williams accounted for 130 yards from scrimmage in the first half and Williams added his second touchdown of the season in the third quarter. The Tigers nearly eclipsed 300 rushing yards for the second time this season, finishing with 294 and four rushing scores. After completing 15 of 23 passes for 150 yards and a score, Bo Nix's day also was done early in the third quarter. - Auburn/AP College Football

Auburn starting tailback JaTarvious Whitlow sustained a knee injury in the Tigers' loss to Florida. Tigers coach Gus Malzahn says Whitlow had a procedure on Tuesday and is expected to miss four to six weeks. Whitlow has rushed for 544 yards and seven touchdowns for the 12th-ranked Tigers, the second-highest total in the Southeastern Conference. Auburn has an open date this week after the 24-13 loss to No. 7 Florida. Whitlow could return in time to play against No. 3 Georgia on Nov. 16. His absence will likely lead to increased roles for Kam Martin and Shaun Shivers. Martin has run for 174 yards and Shivers has gained 144. - AP College Football

The Auburn Tigers came out determined to run and run some more. It was a pretty effective strategy. JaTarvious Whitlow rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns and Bo Nix ran and passed for scores to lead the eighth-ranked Tigers to a 55-16 victory over Kent State Saturday night. "We found our identity early in running the ball," Nix said. "We really moved them up front and we got in a rhythm running the ball. That really opened up certain outside throws, some short ones and got me in a little bit of a rhythm." The Tigers (3-0) piled up 467 rushing yards - and three 100-yard rushers - in their final tune up before Southeastern Conference play. They also got some big plays running and passing from Nix, including a 49-yard flea flicker to a wide-open Eli Stove for a touchdown in the third quarter. Then both offensive stars were able to head to the sideline after the Tigers avoided a pre-SEC letdown against the Golden Flashes (1-2).

Most of the damage was done with a running game that had struggled at times. Nix had runs of 17 and 18 yards on consecutive plays to set up a touchdown on the opening drive and added a 1-yard score. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 161 yards for an offense that topped its combined points from the first two games. "I really think the quarterback keeping it a few times early really opens things up the middle," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. Backup quarterback Joey Gatewood ran for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Shaun Shivers, Auburn's 5-foot-7, 179-pound running back, also gained 102 yards. It was the first time Auburn had three 100-yard rushers in a game since 1983 with a Bo Jackson-led group against Maryland. - Auburn/AP College Football
