He is a grizzled veteran, but San Diego State graduate senior linebacker Caden McDonald welcomes the start of fall camp now more than ever. "It's a blessing to come out here with all the boys again," McDonald said. "Doing six years of first days, this first day has been the most exciting. "You get older, you get more mature, you know what's coming. ... All the butterflies." McDonald said added excitement comes from this being SDSU's 100th season of football, the Aztecs are about to debut at Snapdragon Stadium and, to top it off, younger brother Caden, a transfer from Washington, has joined him on the SDSU defense. - San Diego Times Union

San Diego State linebacker Caden McDonald didn't put his tooth under his pillow in the hope of enriching himself after it was knocked out against Utah last season. McDonald has profited from the loss nonetheless. "A lot of people take losing a front tooth as a negative thing," said McDonald, a 6-foot-3 senior from Haslet, Texas. "You get your tooth knocked out and think, 'Dang, this sucks. Well, what now?' ... "I turned it into a business opportunity. I started my own clothing line." McDonald branded himself the Toothless Cowboy, the idea sparked when he was wearing a cowboy hat and a toothless grin in a TikTok photo. McDonald created a catchy logo - a T and sideways C designed to resemble a smile with a tooth missing - started the website toothlesscowboy.com and was open for business. - San Diego Union Tribune

Linebacker Cooper McDonald, a 6-foot-3 redshirt freshman at Washington, announced on social media that he will transfer to SDSU, joining the school's 2022 early signing class. "I get the awesome opportunity to play alongside my older brother Caden McDonald while doing so," Cooper wrote on Twitter. Cooper started 10 games this season for the Huskies, totaling 26 tackles with 5 1/2 tackles for a loss and 1 1/2 sacks. Caden confirmed that the linebackers from Haslet, Texas, will play together in 2022 in a social media post over the weekend. "I have decided to return to school and forego declaring for the draft to use my last year of eligibility to handle some unfinished business and be a part of the 100th Aztec football team," Caden wrote on Twitter. "I can't wait to open up the season next year in the new stadium and get to see all of Aztec nation in a place we can finally call home. "I also could not turn down the opportunity to play alongside my little brother while doing all of this." - San Diego Union Tribune

SDSU linebacker Caden McDonald was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Aztecs with 2 1/2 sacks among his eight tackles. McDonald, a junior from Haslet, Texas, appreciated the honor, but wasn't satisfied with the performance. "This is just a good first game for us, but we have a lot more to improve on and get better on, that's for sure," McDonald said. "As a defense, we want to not let them score any points. Six points is too much for us, (186) yards in total offense is too much for us as well. We want to keep them to zero on all of that..."Anything more than zero is not acceptable for our defense. We want to be lockdown all the time and shut down everybody we play. This defense has the mindset to be the best in the country week in and week out." - San Diego Union Tribune
