Crum's scoring run capped a 13-play, 74-yard drive for Kent State (2-3 1-0). On the ensuing possession, Bowling Green (2-3, 0-1) couldn't convert on fourth-and-7 at the Kent State 26. Marquez Cooper ran 31 times for 117 yards that included a pair of short-yardage touchdowns.   08/07/21 - QB Dustin CrumrSr/2022, Kent State, 6-1, 210 (DS#14 QB) + More +

Graduate student Dustin Crum has entrenched himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country after completing 70% of his passes for 3,803 yards and 32 touchdowns with just four interceptions while rushing for 947 yards and 10 scores in 17 games over the past two seasons. He could enhance his status in the eyes of NFL scouts with a monster "super senior" season, but that would be considered just a bonus to the Flashes' mild-mannered signal-caller. Crum came back to win a MAC championship, pure and simple.

Lewis has no concerns about Crum letting success go to his head or taking things for granted. The former Midview High School star quarterback is as even-keeled as they come. Crum worked harder than ever during this offseason and has become an even better leader with a much deeper knowledge of the playbook. He's surrounded by talented weapons and protected by a veteran offensive line. To sum it up, there's no reason to believe Crum won't have a huge final season at Kent State. But he still has to go out and make it all happen. Syracuse transfer wide receiver Nykeim Johnson is expected to add a big-play threat to the Kent State offense in 2021. - Akron Beacon Journal

  07/22/21 - QB Dustin CrumrSr/2022, Kent State, 6-1, 210 (DS#14 QB) + More +

At long last, after struggling miserably for the vast majority of the past four-plus decades, Kent State's days as a football underdog have ended. For the first time in program history the Golden Flashes were picked to win the Mid-American Conference's East Division in the annual preseason media poll, which was released to kickoff Media Day Festivities on Tuesday at Ford Field in Detroit. And the voting really wasn't even that close. The Flashes received half of the 22 first-place votes and totaled 112 points to finish well ahead of runner-up Ohio (96 points, 2 first-place votes), Miami (94, 5) and defending East Division champion Buffalo (93, 4). Ball State was chosen to claim the West Division and to win the MAC Championship Game for the second straight year.

Kent State's highest predicted finish in past preseason media polls was third in 2013, the year after the Flashes went unbeaten during the MAC regular season to capture the East Division crown and earned a school-record 11 wins. What does this sudden burst of respect tossed Kent State's way mean to fourth-year head coach Sean Lewis and his program? "This is great. I'd much rather be on this side of the spectrum than where we where a few years ago with these preseason polls, when nobody was talking about us," said Lewis. "But all of that being said, it's still about work. Work works. Let's go get what we're capable of doing. Let's embrace these expectations from the outside. Let's lean into it. This is where we want to be." - Akron Beacon Journal

  04/06/21 - QB Dustin CrumrSr/2022, Kent State, 6-1, 210 (DS#14 QB) + More +

Kent State has a bonafide star at the most important position on the field to build around in graduate student quarterback Dustin Crum, whose numbers over the past two seasons stack up favorably against anyone in the nation. Since taking over the starting signal-caller spot in the second game of 2019, Crum has completed 70 percent of his passes for 3,803 yards with 32 touchdowns compared to four interceptions while adding 947 yards rushing and 10 scores.

Crum certainly has no intentions of resting on his laurels. "He's really attacking the preparation and diving deeper into the knowledge and understanding of how everything works," said Lewis. "It's been really great to see him come into his own as a more vocal leader this offseason and really take guys on the journey that he's on with him. I think that past couple of years it's been about his individual journey. Obviously he's moved the program forward. Now he's really making a conscious effort to grab other guys and bring them along and elevate their play, so they can have the same level of success that he's had." - Akron Beacon Journal

Kent State football players, as coach Sean Lewis said Thursday, haven't been able to call themselves winners for seven years. On Friday night, the Golden Flashes not only became winners but also achieved something that no other team in school history could claim - a bowl victory. Dustin Crum passed for 289 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a career-high 147 yards and the clinching score to help Kent State beat Utah State 51-41 in the Frisco Bowl. "I'm just so happy for the university," said Crum, who also was Kent State's leading rusher during the season. "We weren't supposed to be here, but here we are." Kent State (7-6) closed with four straight wins to finish with a winning record for the first time since 2012. "I love these boys," said second-year coach Lewis, whose first Kent State team finished 2-10. "Just tremendous resolve by them. It was a testament to their character." Matthew Trickett kicked five field goals to set a Kent State game record. - AP College Football
