Memphis wide receiver Calvin Austin III began his football career as a walk-on in 2017. He was a track standout hoping to earn a football scholarship. Four years later, Austin became one of the most prolific receivers in program history. On Monday, he ended his Tigers career by announcing he was opting out of the Hawaii Bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft. "The only word that can accurately explain how I feel is humbled. I am humbled by the city embracing and showing love to a walk on. Your support has been unmatched. By creating a brotherhood with my teammates across the years is something that I will cherish forever," Austin wrote in his announcement on Twitter. Austin, who grew up in Memphis and attended Harding Academy, ends his career with 2,541 yards and 22 touchdowns on 156 catches. He also leaves Memphis tied for second in touchdown receptions with Carlos Singleton and fourth in receiving yards. He also had three rushing touchdowns and two punt return TDs, including a 94-yard touchdown this season in the Tigers' 31-29 win over Mississippi State. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Seth Henigan completed eight of 11 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns as Memphis scored on five of its first six drives to halt a three-game slide and defeat Navy 35-17 on Thursday night. Four of the five touchdown drives included at least one big play to burn the Navy defense. Henigan competed a 49-yard pass to Javon Ivory on the first play of the game, a 74-yard TD pass to Eddie Lewis and a 51-yard gainer to Koby Drake in the third quarter. The Tigers (4-3, 1-2 American Athletic Conference) also scored on a 69-yard reverse. Calvin Austin III sprinted 69-yards to score on a reverse, staking Memphis to a 14-7 lead it wouldn't relinquish, one play after Navy ground 21 plays to tie the game at 7. It was the most plays for any drive by any team at the FBS level this season. Austin's reverse was all speed, looping out of the backfield and slipping through a knot of three would-be tacklers converging on him just beyond the line of scrimmage. - Memphis/AP College Football

SEPT 20 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Calvin Austin III, Sr., WR, Memphis,...Austin had nine catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns, but it was his game-changing special teams play that delivered Memphis' 31-29 win against Mississippi State. The Tigers trailed 21-17 in the fourth quarter when Austin broke through a crowd of players on the Bulldogs' punt coverage team, picked up the ball at the 6-yard line and raced 94 yards for a touchdown and the longest punt return in American Athletic Conference history. Austin finished with 212 all-purpose yards and three total TDs. - American Athletic Conference Football

Calvin Austin scored three second-half touchdowns including a questionable 94-yard punt return in the fourth quarter as Memphis rallied for a 31-29 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday. The victory and Austin's punt return were part of a wild final six minutes that included onside kicks, penalties, reviews, and other questions such as whether Austin could return the punt on which he scored or if the ball was dead.

The Southeastern Conference issued a tweet after the game, arguing the punt return should have been reviewed after the back judge, part of an SEC officiating crew, had signaled to stop the clock after the punted ball stopped moving. The signal apparently went unseen. Told some thought an official ruled the play dead, Mississippi State coach Mike Leach responded: "Did they call the play dead? So, he did call the play dead? We'll have to look at that on film, and maybe some others will too." In the end, Memphis (3-0) escaped with the victory thanks to a 51-yard field goal from Tigers kicker Joe Doyle with 2:02 left. A two-play drive from Mississippi State (2-1) after the field goal was capped by a 36-yard touchdown from quarterback Will Rogers to Makai Polk. But Rogers run for the two-point conversion failed, preserving the Memphis victory. - Memphis/AP College Football

True freshman Seth Henigan threw five touchdown passes, three to Calvin Austin III, who had a career night with 239 yards, and Memphis held off Arkansas State 55-50 on Saturday night. The teams combined for 1,361 yards of offense - with the Red Wolves (1-1) outgaining Memphis (2-0) by just a yard - with 1,001 coming through the air. James Blackman relieved Layne Hatcher at quarterback for the Red Wolves late in the third quarter and went 19 of 28 for 308 yards passing and four touchdowns, including two in the final four minutes to get Arkansas State close before a final Hail Mary failed as time ran out.

Henigan was 22-of-33 passing for 417 yards while redshirt freshman running back Brandon Thomas rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns for Memphis. Sean Dykes had 143 yards receiving and two scores. Jeff Foreman had eight catches for 198 yards and Te'Vailance Hunt nine for 123 for Arkansas State. There were seven touchdowns in the game that covered 50 yards or more. Austin's 55-yard TD early on gave Memphis a lead it would keep, going up 34-23 at halftime and 41-30 after three quarters. - Memphis/AP College Football

  07/30/21 - WR Calvin Austin IIIrSr/2022, Memphis, 5-08, 170 (DS#10 WR) + More +

Two seasons ago, Calvin Austin III hoped to make the Memphis football team as a walk-on. Now the Memphis native might be the Tigers' best returning player. Austin led the AAC in receiving yards (1,053) and touchdowns (11) last season. Both marks were top-10 nationally and helped him make the All-AAC first team. His success was noted as he made the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award (nation's best player) and Biletnikoff Award (nation's best wide receiver). But Memphis will need more production from their 5-foot-9 dynamo this season if it wants to win its second AAC championship in three years.

Austin's speed will be used on punt returns and should make him among the conference's leaders in all-purpose yards. Staying healthy is a must, of course, especially because there's limited depth behind him after Tahj Washington transferred to Southern Cal. Can Javon Ivory be a consistent No. 2 option after a solid freshman year? Are freshmen Khi Mathieu, Kobe Webster and Marcayll Jones ready to contribute after limited action last season? - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Memphis' leading wide receiver will be back for the 2021 season. Calvin Austin III said Friday that he'll return for his senior year with the Tigers after a 1,000-yard campaign. In his statement on Twitter, he said he considered declaring for the NFL Draft before deciding to return. In his first season on scholarship, Austin finished with 1,053 yards and 11 touchdowns and was named to the All-AAC first team. Austin also had a punt return for a score against Stephen F. Austin. He started every game this season and stepped up as the Tigers' No. 1 receiver after Damonte Coxie opted out midseason to declare for the NFL Draft. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Brady White was 10-for-12 passing on the final two scoring drives to bring Memphis back. The first ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Sean Dykes and the second culminated with Calvin Austin catching a 9-yard go-ahead touchdown with 1:03 left. It was almost deja vu to White connecting with Austin for the final touchdown when the Tigers beat UCF on Oct. 17. White won his 24th game at Memphis, setting a new program record for quarterback wins, and his four touchdown passes now have him at 81 in his career, which ties Danny Wimprine's school record. Austin, with 102 receiving yards, tied Anthony Miller's school record for consecutive 100-yard games with four. - Memphis Commercial Appeal
