The Kansas State football team will need to replace a pair of its top playmakers next season. Malik Knowles, a senior receiver who led the Wildcats in catches (48) and receiving yards (725) this past season, has decided to forgo an extra year of college football and declare for the NFL Draft. Knowles announced his decision via social media on Thursday, saying that he had already received an invitation to compete at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine that takes place before the draft. - The Kansas City Star

2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Malik Knowles, Kansas State,...A Second Team All-American kick returner in 2021 and a Preseason All-American this year, Knowles finished second nationally with two kickoff-return touchdowns, while his 33.1-yard average ranked fourth in the country. He was a First Team All-Big 12 kick returner by the league's coaches, marking the 15th time in the 26-year existence of the Big 12 - and the eighth time in the last nine years - that a Wildcat was a First Team All-Big 12 returner.

A product of Mansfield, Texas, Knowles enters his senior season tied for fourth in school history in kickoff-return touchdowns (3), and he is ranked sixth in both kickoff-return average (28.2) and yards (1,099). Knowles will open the 2022 campaign tied for second nationally among active players in career kickoff-return touchdowns and fifth in kickoff-return average. As a receiver, Knowles hauled in 29 receptions for 441 yards and four touchdowns in 2021 as he earned Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades. - Kansas State Football

2021 ALL-BIG 12 HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Malik Knowles (WR, STPoY),...K-State had nine players pick up honorable mention accolades at their respective positions: defensive back Julius Brents, linebackers Cody Fletcher and Daniel Green, defensive tackle Eli Huggins, offensive lineman Noah Johnson, defensive back Jahron McPherson, offensive lineman Josh Rivas, defensive back Reggie Stubblefield and punter Ty Zentner.   2021 ALL-BIG 12 FIRST TEAM (COACHES): KR/PR Malik Knowles, Kansas State, Jr.,...Knowles' inclusion on the first team as a returner marks the 15th time in the 26-year existence of the Big 12 – and eighth time in the last nine years – that a Wildcat was a First Team All-Big 12 returner. A product of Mansfield, Texas, Knowles leads the nation in both kickoff-return average (32.9 yards per return) and touchdowns (2), as his scores went for 99 yards at Oklahoma State and 93 yards the next week against Oklahoma. - Kansas State Football

Knowles' lack of production is baffling. He ranks sixth - sixth! - on the team in both receptions (four) and receiving yards (77) this year. He's capable of so much more - he proved that last season, when he received votes as the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year after catching 27 passes for 397 yards and three touchdowns. He put up those numbers despite, yet again, battling various injuries for the majority of the season. Vaughn is terrific. Tight end Briley Moore has shown to be dependable, too. But for K-State to avoid a deflating end to the regular season - with games left against Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Baylor and Texas, a 1-3 record in that span is a distinct possibility - it needs the receiving corps to step up. Knowles is the best of the bunch. He just needs to prove it with a stellar finish to his sophomore campaign. - Manhattan Mercury

Walker was a 2017 Second Team All-Big 12 pick, while the rest of the group earned their first All-Big 12 honor. - Kansas State Football
