A week after Nebraska fired head coach Scott Frost, the team's defensive coordinator is out. Interim head coach Mickey Joseph said Sunday that defensive coordinator Erik Chinander was fired a day after Nebraska gave up 580 yards and 49 points in lopsided loss to No. 6 Oklahoma. Chinander had led Nebraska's defense since Frost took over the team in 2018, but his unit floundered this year as the Cornhuskers fell to 1-3. A week before the 49-14 loss to Oklahoma, Nebraska gave up 642 yards in a 45-42 upset by Georgia Southern that preceded Frost's firing. "We appreciate Erik and the work and dedication he has given to our football program," Joseph said in a statement. "At this time, I feel that it is in the best interest of the Nebraska football program to take the leadership of the defense in another direction." Special teams coordinator Bill Busch was promoted to defensive coordinator. Athletic director Trev Alberts said after Joseph was named interim head coach that he would have the power to make any changes he thought were needed. Alberts fired Frost after he went 16-31 in a little more than four seasons. - AP College Football

To a man, the Huskers swear that Northwestern didn't wear out their defense on Saturday. The Wildcats did not run for 214 yards because NU got tired. Chris Kolarevic says the Huskers struggled to defend some of NW's "tricky" concepts. Motions, shifts - "We did a good job preparing for them," Kolarevic said, "But that's something that's a little difficult (to defend)." Ochaun Mathis said NU struggled with communication. Not all game, Mathis said. But in a few key moments, the Huskers didn't call plays fast enough. Nelson had no explanation. "That just can't happen," he said. "That's not how you win Big Ten football." - Lincoln Journal Star

When Nebraska got together for a full-pad scrimmage, Ochaun Mathis was surprised at the intensity of the practice. So far, Chinander said fellow edge rushers Garrett Nelson and Caleb Tannor have moved around defensively for certain packages due to their knowledge of the system, while Mathis has primarily played as a defensive end. There's been a slight adjustment from his TCU days to Nebraska's defensive system, where Mathis has operated on the boundary to ensure he can rush the passer as much as possible. But, as is the case with most challenges that come his way, Mathis has been quick to attack it head-on. "Ochaun's done a great job," Chinander said. "(There's a) different structure to the defense, he was off the ball a lot last year it seemed, so he's had to play a little more true defensive end for us, which he's done a great job responding to coach Dawson. He's picked up everything, he's a big-time effort guy and he showed up at the scrimmage." Mathis' practice success is another reason why Nebraska's coaching staff is expecting a lot from the defensive line.

Nelson, Tannor, Jimari Butler and Blaise Gunnerson are all likely to contribute at edge rusher, while the likes of Nash Hutmacher, Ty Robinson, Colton Feist and Stephon Wynn Jr. have stood out along the interior of the line. The defensive line is likely to be a strength for Nebraska, and it's something the entire coaching staff is counting on the lead the defensive effort. "Those guys up front are working as hard as my guys in the back end and we all know that stuff works hand in hand," defensive backs coach Travis Fisher said. "If my guys can cover for a half a second extra, it helps those guys up front to get to the quarterback. If those guys up front can fluster that quarterback up top, it helps my guys as well." Mathis said his fellow edge rushers welcomed him with "open arms" early in the process and are easy to work with in practice or while watching film. - Lincoln Journal Star

It was no question that two-time All-Big 12 second-team edge rusher Ochaun Mathis was going to stand out when he got to Nebraska, but even more than having "elite talent" and being "just a great guy," Frost said, is how he's been getting the play of everyone around him to step up. And that includes Garrett Nelson, as well as Caleb Tannor and Blaise Gunnerson. "Maybe the best thing getting Ochaun here is I've really seen [the edge rushers'] games step up," Frost said. "I don't know if him getting added to the equation motivated them or not. Maybe they'd have been doing the same thing but it's great to watch those guys work. That's a position I feel great about because of the depth and the talent that we have." - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska has updated its roster - currently at 151 players - for the 2022 football season, and debuted two new position designations that better reflect the changing nature of football and NU's defensive alignment. Outside linebackers have now become EDGE players who hover near the line of scrimmage and may play with their hand on the ground, like a defensive end, or in a two-point stance, like an outside linebacker in a 3-4 or 5-2. Nine players - Garrett Nelson, Caleb Tannor, Ochaun Mathis, Jimari Butler, Blaise Gunnerson, Jake Appleget, Simon Otte, Braden Klover and Ryan Schommmer - have the EDGE designation.

NU also has NICK - for nickel back position - that was previously manned by three-year starter JoJo Domann. The NICK spot features a hybrid linebacker/safety athlete who is asked to play the outside run while also covering tight ends and slot receivers in various coverage schemes. Six players - Isaac Gifford, Chris Kolarevic, Javin Wright, Gage Stenger, Grant Buda and John Bullock - have the NICK designation. - Lincoln Journal Star

The Nebraska football team will kick off the 2022 season just about as early as a team can do it. The Huskers' Week 0 game against Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland, will kick off at 11:30 a.m. Central time on Aug. 27 and be televised nationally by FOX. The game will be a 5:30 p.m. kick in Dublin. The Huskers learned kickoff times for seven of their games Thursday as the Big Ten's television partners released their schedules. Nebraska's Sept. 17 home game against Oklahoma will also get the national spotlight as part of FOX's Big Noon kickoff. That game will kick at 11 a.m., with FOX's Big Noon Kickoff pregame show coming to Lincoln as part of the day. NU's home opener against North Dakota on Sept. 3 will kick at 2:30 p.m. on BTN, and Nebraska will play its first night game of the season the following Saturday against Georgia Southern - a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on FS1. - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska has targetted TCU's Ochaun Mathis as long as any player in the transfer portal this off-season. Mathis announced on Saturday (April 30) he will play for the Huskers in 2022, picking NU over Texas. This is arguably the biggest position of need for Nebraska heading into the 2022 season, and Mathis is regarded as the most proven pass rusher currently in the transfer portal. The Athletic ranked Mathis on Apr. 27 as the No. 1 overall available player currently in the transfer portal. This is a major victory for head coach Scott Frost and his program, as it gives the Huskers a proven third-down pass rusher off the edge.

The defensive line is without a doubt the biggest hole on NU's roster. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Mathis was a second-team All-Big 12 selection in both 2020 and 2021. He lead the Big 12 in 2020 with nine sacks over 10 games, to go along with 14 tackles for loss. In 2021, had four sacks and seven tackles for loss. He's played in 38 total games for the Horned Frogs, compiling 15.5 sacks and 30.5 tackles for loss, to go along with 135 total tackles. Mathis has two years of eligibility remaining, as he redshirted in 2018, playing in just four games. Mathis took an official visit to Lincoln on the weekend of Apr. 9, and he was in Austin for the Longhorn's spring game on Apr. 23. - Rivals

Former TCU defensive end standout Ochaun Mathis has narrowed his list to two. During a 13-minute YouTube video released Sunday, Mathis said he'll announce April 30 his final decision on where he'll continue his playing career. The finalists: Nebraska and Texas. The Athletic currently has Mathis listed as the best player available in the transfer portal, and Nebraska is looking for help on the edge and on the defensive front line in general. Mathis started 34 games for the Horned Frogs over his career there. In 2021, he had 45 tackles (seven for loss) and four sacks. In 2020, he led TCU with nine sacks and 14 TFLs, making him one of the most productive defensive players available in the transfer portal. - Lincoln Journal Star
