 Terrel Bernard, Baylor, Player News

  01/01/22 - OLB Terrel BernardrSr/2022, Baylor, 6-1, 218 (DS#14 OLB) + More +

A Sugar Bowl showdown against Mississippi and coach Lane Kiffin's explosive, Southeastern Conference-leading offense provided a high-profile platform for Baylor to validate its old-school formula of ball control and aggressive defense. Al Walcott set a Sugar Bowl record with a 96-yard interception return, Monaray Baldwin raced 48 yards for the go-ahead score on an end around, and sixth-ranked Baylor beat No. 8 Mississippi 21-7 Saturday night as injured Rebels quarterback Matt Corral watched from the sideline on crutches.

Abram Smith rushed for 172 yards to finish with a single-season record 1,601 for Big 12 champion Baylor (12-2), which won 12 games in a season for the first time. The defense did the rest, finishing with 10 sacks - two by game MVP Terrel Bernard - and three interceptions. "I would not put it as necessarily as a point to prove," Baylor coach Dave Aranda said when summing up the significance of the victory. "I would say it as more of an identity to show...Just to take the stage and to take the lights and the crowd and all of that and to, like, be us - all the way, man. "You want other people to see it," Aranda continued. "I'm appreciative that we had the opportunity, and we took advantage of it." - Baylor/AP College Football

NOV 15 BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Terrel Bernard, BU, LB, Sr.,...Bernard led Baylor with nine tackles, including a pair of sacks in its 27-14 win over No. 8 Oklahoma, the Bears' first over the Sooners since 2014. He spearheaded a dominant defensive performance holding OU to just 14 points, 26 below their season average and their fewest points since December of 2014. With his two sacks, Bernard became the sixth player in program history with 14+ career sacks. - Big 12 Football

Midway through the 2020 season, Bernard appeared to be on the fast track to the NFL. He had amassed 55 tackles in just five games, with his 19-tackle showing against Texas in Baylor's third game of the season as the crown jewel of his 2020 slate. But after tearing his labrum and fracturing his shoulder against Iowa State in Baylor's fifth game of the season, everything changed for Bernard, who was leading the team in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss at the time. Bernard had season-ending surgery, and the considerable rehab required to deal with those injuries ultimately led Bernard to decide a trip to the NFL would have to wait another year. He's now healthy and back for another season, and should be a leader on a Baylor defense that's Dave Aranda is trying to mold into his next dominant unit. - Dallas Morning News

The pain and numbness in Terrel Bernard's shoulder told him just how grim things were. Eventually, Bernard would learn that he had sustained a torn labrum and fractured shoulder on that play in a loss to Iowa State. "It hurt," Bernard said. "I knew it was pretty bad. I knew my season was probably going to be over. If I could, I wanted to go back in and do what I could - at least finish the game if not the season." He returned to the game for a while, essentially playing with one arm before exiting, his season over. Bernard was leading the Big 12 in tackles with 55 through five games, including 19 in an epic performance against Texas. Those season totals include 6.5 tackles for loss, including 3.5 sacks.

His decision to return is one reason why Baylor hopes to be improved after going 2-7 in Dave Aranda's first season. "Big fan of Terrel," Aranda said. "He's got a great heart. His care for others, there's a selflessness about him that our team sees and recognizes. He pushes people to be better by the way that he goes about his day. "I'm thankful for Terrel coming back. It was a choice that he made. We're all better for it. I'm a better coach because of it." A fifth-year senior, Bernard contemplated the NFL draft and fulfilling a lifelong dream in spite of the injury. "I was really thinking about it," Bernard said. "Having that opportunity was something I wanted to do since I was a kid." - Dallas Morning News

Not everyone can pull off a green suit, but Terrel Bernard is just that dude. Looking positively resplendent in a matching seaweed-colored ensemble, nobody looked happier to be in attendance at Big 12 Media Days on Tuesday than Bernard. That's because nobody is more eager to get back on the field. The Baylor linebacker played like a sure-fire first-team All-American for five games in 2020 before a shoulder injury halted everything. Bernard went from laying the boom to laboring over the labrum. The end hit harder than, well, one of his own jarring tackles. "Just being disconnected from the team," said Bernard, when asked to pinpoint the hardest part of his absence from the field. "You've got to go do your own thing for a little bit, and that's never fun. Being injured, that can take away from the mental side, too. I think that was the most difficult part for me. Just not being able to be out there and compete with my guys, it was a hard time."

Bernard didn't need an X-ray to reveal that his shoulder was wrecked. He knew it from the moment it happened in a 38-31 loss to Iowa State last November in Ames. His arm fell limp. It pulsed with pain. And yet he still went back in the game for a while - mostly because he knew it would be his last chance in 2020. "It hurt. I knew it was pretty bad, and I knew my season was probably going to be over," Bernard said. "So, if I could, I wanted to go back in and do what I could to at least finish the game if I wasn't going to be able to finish the season." - Waco Tribune Herald

Texas was picked third followed in order by Oklahoma State, TCU, West Virginia, Kansas State, Baylor, Texas Tech and Kansas. Baylor finished ninth in the Big 12 with a 2-7 record in 2020 in Dave Aranda's first season as head coach.   Baylor junior linebacker Terrel Bernard, the Big 12's top tackler, will miss the rest of the season because of a shoulder injury. Coach Dave Aranda said Monday that Bernard has a torn labrum and likely a fracture in his shoulder. Bernard and freshman running back Craig Williams were both hurt in Saturday's loss at Iowa State. Williams injured the ACL and MCL in his knee, and will also miss the rest of the season. "Both of those kids are great kids, they're both leaders for us, each in their own way, and they were both playing really good ball," Aranda said. Bernard led the Big 12 with 11 tackles per game, 55 in Baylor's five games. He also had 3 1/2 sacks. Williams had 197 yards rushing and two touchdowns.   Baylor's season opening football game against Ole Miss has been moved from Sept. 5 to Sunday Sept. 6 at NRG Stadium in Houston as part of ESPN's package of Labor Day games. The Bears will be designated the home team for the neutral site game which will match a pair of first-year head coaches at their respective schools: Baylor's Dave Aranda and Mississippi's Lane Kiffin. The kickoff time will be announced at a later date. "ESPN's Sunday game during kickoff weekend has quickly developed into a strong franchise," said Pete Derzis, ESPN senior vice president of programming and ESPN Events. "We look forward to continuing that success as we feature two head coaches in their inaugural games with two great programs. We want to thank the schools and our Texas kickoff team for recognizing this unique opportunity." The game will mark the second meeting between the two schools.   Baylor hired LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda as its new head coach Thursday, three days after the Tigers completed their undefeated national championship. Aranda, a head coach for the first time, takes over a Big 12 program in much better shape than it was when Matt Rhule got there more than three years ago. "I'm excited to get started as a Baylor Bear. From the outside looking in, I was so impressed watching Baylor play," Aranda said in a statement that was included in Baylor's announcement of his hire. "Seeing the unity of the team and the togetherness of their play really illustrated a strong culture," he said. "I'm ready to touch down in Waco and get to work."

Rhule became head coach of the NFL's Carolina Panthers on Jan. 7, six days after the Bears finished an 11-3 season with a loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Baylor was ranked 13th in the final AP Top 25 poll. The 43-year-old Aranda, who was the highest-paid college assistant at $2.5 million a season, was a Power Five defensive coordinator the past seven seasons. He was at Wisconsin from 2013-15 before spending four years at LSU, capped by a win over Clemson on Monday night for a 15-0 record. - AP College Football
