Former Washington and Virginia running back Wayne Taulapapa officially declared for the 2023 NFL Draft, he announced on his Twitter page on Friday evening. He shined in his only season with the Washington Huskies this year, putting up the best numbers of his college football career. Taulapapa racked up over 1,000 all-purpose yards and 12 total touchdowns. Per his Twitter account: "Always been a dream chaser, so why not me Grateful for each of you and the love and care I received both from my UVA and UW family CFB has been nothing but good to the kid from La'ie, Hawai'i! With that being said Big Papa/Samoan Slasher out #2023NFLDRAFT - Wayne Taulapapa Twitter

  11/20/22 - RB Wayne TaulapaparSr/2023, Washington, 5-10, 205 (DS#49 RB) + More +

Wayne Taulapapa's voice was still laden with emotion after he rushed for two touchdowns and 107 yards in No. 15 Washington's 54-7 victory over Colorado, his best performance of the season. The Washington senior transfer running back wore a leigh made of flowers and a candy-bar necklace, offerings from supporters who knew what a difficult week it's been for the Virginia transfer after three Cavaliers were killed by a former teammate this week. The Huskies (9-2, 6-2 Pac 12) leaned on Taulapapa a little, too, as they rushed for five touchdowns in their fifth straight victory. Coach Kalen DeBoer said Taulapapa's grit got the team rolling and teammates rallied around him. Taulapapa scored from 8 and 2 yards out to get the Huskies to a 21-0 lead. Cameron Davis added two more scores for Washington, which finished 7-0 at home after rushing for 280 yards in the game.

The victory gave DeBoer nine wins in his first season, a school record. And it kept the Huskies in the race for a berth in the conference title game with one contest to go, though they need lots of help after USC clinched a spot earlier Saturday. Up next is the Apple Cup against Washington State, a game that means more this year than rivalry bragging rights. With the running backs grinding, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. passed for a season-low 229 yards, though he figured in the game's most electric play. Penix handed the ball off to Jalen McMillan on the double reverse, then eventually found the receiver in the left flat. McMillan weaved through the secondary, breaking four tackles on the way to a 27-yard touchdown for a 14-0 lead. He finished with eight catches for 98 yards. - Washington/AP College Football

  04/25/22 - RB Wayne TaulapaparSr/2023, Washington, 5-10, 205 (DS#49 RB) + More +

Wayne Taulapapa plays a beautiful game. Though that's up for interpretation. Taulapapa - a 5-foot-9, 200-pound running back and Virginia transfer - has built a reputation on brutality. He's more hockey enforcer than home-run hitter - a purveyor of leg-churning, contact-craving 4-yard runs and determined touchdown plunges. His style is purposeful, not picturesque. He conducts a pad-popping symphony. "Growing up in Hawaii, we love contact. That's the nature of the game, which is beautiful," Taulapapa told The Times this week. "Obviously you're going to get hit sometimes, which is fine. That's part of the game. But if you can give it back, I think it's a sight to see. It gets the team going. It gets the energy up. I think that's the best part of football." Taulapapa's your guy if you agree.

In four seasons and 40 games at UVA, the 2021 team captain - who entered the transfer portal primarily to move closer to home - compiled 1,192 rushing yards with 4.5 yards per carry, 20 total touchdowns...and a career long of 27 yards. He accepted a role as the Cavaliers' short-yardage specialist, chiseling between the tackles for extra inches. "Whatever I'm told to do, I will do it - when it comes to blocking, when it comes to pass-catching, when it comes to running the ball," said Taulapapa, who announced a commitment to UW this month and has one season of eligibility remaining. "I'm known out of Virginia as a short yardage back who attains every yard that I can, working hard - fourth-and-one, third-and-one or two. That's something I've always done at Virginia. But I do want to expand and be a better back in all areas." - Seattle Times

  09/15/19 - RB Wayne TaulapaparSr/2023, Washington, 5-10, 205 (DS#49 RB) + More +

Virginia turned the clock back 24 years and the No. 25 Cavaliers handed Florida State another gut-wrenching defeat. The Cavaliers stopped Cam Akers on a final-play run from the 4 on Saturday night and barely hung on for a 31-24 victory that was reminiscent of the one in 1995 when they stopped Warrick Dunn on the final play in handing the Seminoles' their first ACC loss. "Anyone that was in the stadium today witnessed an amazing football game," Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "Our defensive heart and effort was magical. I won't forget this one ever."

Wayne Taulapapa ran for three touchdowns, the last with 2:34 remaining, to cap a rally that seemed doomed after the Cavaliers were poised to tie it with 6:02 remaining until Brian Delaney was wide right on his extra point try, keeping the Seminoles ahead, 24-23. "After that missed (PAT), it got a lot more serious in the matter of the defense really has to win this game," safety Joey Blount said. The Cavaliers (3-0, 2-0 ACC) stopped Florida State on the next three plays, and Bryce Perkins led Virginia down the field. It took them just six plays to travel 72 yards with Joe Reed ripping off a 22-yard run and Perkins hitting Hasise Dubois for 35 yards to the Florida State 15. - Virginia/AP College Football
