Yasir Abdullah is a physical freak who could launch his NFL Draft stock into outer space this season. He was good in 2020 with three sacks, seven tackles for a loss and 33 tackles, but he was dominant last season with 61 tackles, 17.5 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks. He returns as the best pass rusher in the ACC, only Florida State's Jermaine Johnson was better and he was drafted in the first round No. 26 overall in the NFL Draft on Thursday.

Abdullah has that type of upside with his athleticism and competitive drive. If he puts together another All-ACC year, he could compete for ACC Defensive Player of the Year and watch his stock rise. He could give Louisville two potential first-round picks if he and Clark play up to expectations. - Courier Journal

2021 ALL-ACC FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM (COACHES/MEDIA): LB - Yasir Addullah, Louisville, 92 votes,...The Cardinals put two players from their defense on the second team in junior linebacker Yasir Abdullah and sophomore cornerback Kei'Trel Clark. Abdullah led the team with 9.0 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss in 12 games as a starter. The 9.0 sacks were the most by a UofL player since Devonte Fields recorded 11.0 in 2015. Abdullah, who registered 52 tackles from his outside linebacker position, was credited with a season high 3.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks in a win at Florida State and recorded 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks in a win over Syracuse. - Louisville Football

Want to see the potential in Abdullah? Look no further than the loss to Virginia last year. He recorded 10 tackles and two tackles for a loss. He had seven tackles the week before against Virginia Tech. The junior from Florida ended the year on a hot streak, recording 22 tackles in the last five games with three tackles for a loss, one sack and one forced fumble. The impression around many is that Abdullah was just getting started and is poised for a strong season this year. If so, Abdullah could be a big part in the Cardinals getting after the quarterback more. I'd buy Abdullah stock right now, because I think he has a chance to be Louisville's top breakout performer this season. - Courier Journal

Yasir Abdullah had a strong sophomore season, despite having to learn a new defense. He tallied 45 tackles, four for a loss, one sack and two fumble recoveries, but there was still room to improve. As he and co-defensive coordinator (and outside linebackers coach) Cort Dennison talked about ways Abdullah could improve, they discussed a variety of things. One of them was his weight. Entering last season Abdullah was listed at 218 pounds, and as the outside linebacker playing the "Dog" position for Louisville, he was undersized. The "Dog" linebacker is the one who is often a pass rusher on passing downs and sets the edge against opposing offensive tackles, too.

Abdullah will admit that he struggled to do that last year, so he went to work on his body. As the second week of fall camp nears its end, Abdullah is around 235 pounds. The added weight along with his instinct and athleticism has Dennison raving about Abdullah entering the season. "Yasir is one of the most athletic and fastest players on our football team," Dennison said before fall camp began. "Any time you get a guy that is 225 or 230 that can run like he can you can do things defensively and create mismatches." - Courier Journal
