John Samuel Shenker set records last season at Auburn for tight ends with 33 receptions and 413 receiving yards as a security blanket for now departed Bo Nix or TJ Finley. During February's inquiry, Shenker was one of the more vocal Tiger players to stan d up for Bryan Harsin. His return to the roster provides experience and leadership. Shenker could break more records this season. "I think with Eric Kiesau; there's a whole different dimension of communication. We are allowing everyone to be on the same page and pushing towards the same goal," Shenker said about his role in the offense. "And to be on that same page is beneficial for our offense. As Tank said, added run emphasis as well. But it also creates better communication with our wide receivers an d tight ends." - Birmingham News

2022 PRESEASON JOHN MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST: JOHN SAMUEL SHENKER, AUBURN,...A sixth-year senior, Shenker set program season records for tight ends with 33 receptions for 413 yards in 2021. He was the John Mackey Award player of the week vs. LSU after mak ing five catches for 102 yards, the first 100-yard game by an Auburn tight end since 1994. In his career, Shenker has totaled 45 receptions for 540 yards and two touchdowns. - Auburn Football

Auburn lost two of its top-three receivers from last season following the departures of Kobe Hudson (dismissed before transferring to UCF) and Demetris Robertson (exhausted eligibility), and while the team returns second-leading receiver Shedrick Jackson for a super-senior season, arguably the most important target in the passing game is another super senior: tight end John Samuel Shenker. The sixth-year senior is coming off a record-setting season at the position for Auburn, as he set the program's sin gle-season record for receptions (33) and receiving yards (413) by a tight end.He became the first tight end in school history to record a 30-catch, 400-yard season, and his 2021 campaign was the most impactful by a tight end on the Plains since C .J. Uzomah in 2014 (Uzomah, who had 11 catches for 145 yards and three touchdowns that season was the last tight end to finish a season with double-digit receptions for Auburn). The one thing missing from Shenker's campaign was the end zone, as he did no t score a touchdown in 2021, but the 6-foot-4, 250-pounder still managed to set the bar for tight ends at Auburn. After a New Year's Day announcement that he'd return for the free year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the pandemic, Shenker will try to raise that bar this season as the tight end position continues to evolve within Auburn's offense. - Birmingham News

Samuel-Shenker showed a lot of versatility during a rough season for Auburn. He can line up anywhere on the field as a blocker or receiver. He was a favorite target of Nix for a good reason. Auburn's new starting quarterback would be wise to lean on the surehanded Samuel-Shenker. - Birmingham News

Production from the tight end position has been scant at Auburn in recent years, as the Tigers haven't had a tight end finish the season with at least 10 receptions since 2014, when C.J. Uzomah had 11 catches for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Shenker c ame closest to that mark last year, when he had nine catches for 97 yards-but that production paled in comparison to what tight ends have done in Harsin's offenses.In each of Harsin's seven seasons as head coach at Boise State, the Broncos had two tight ends finish with double-digit receptions. During his tenure, the Broncos also produced four tight ends who finished a season with at least 20 catches, three of whom eclipsed the 30-catch mark in a season. That's the kind of involvement Auburn coul d expect to see from the position this fall. It's just a matter of who will be the biggest beneficiary of it. Shenker returns as the Tigers' most experienced player at the position, with 36 games and 14 starts under his belt. He spent the spring focusing most of his time on baseball, but he will factor into the starting role for the Tigers this fall. - Birmingham News
