Marlon Williams, Central Florida, Player News

Former UCF wide receiver Marlon Williams helped the Birmingham Stallions capture the inaugural USFL championship 33-30 over the Philadelphia Stars on Sunday night at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Williams, who played for UCF from 2017-20, caught 7 passes for a game-high 105 receiving yards, including a 41-yard touchdown reception in the first half. "It was really awesome to have a game like that," Williams told the Orlando Sentinel. "I expect that from myself every game. Anytime you're playing for a championship, it's a great opportunity." The long touchdown catch by Williams gave the Stallions a 17-9 lead with less than a minute to play in the second quarter. Birmingham led 20-9 at halftime following a field goal.

The Stars made it a one-possession game in the third quarter before eventually taking their first lead of the night when quarterback Case Cookus hit Devin Gray for a 12-yard catch in the end zone. Birmingham marched down the field with less than seven minutes remaining as quarterback Alex McGough connected with Williams twice on the late-game drive. The Stallions regained the lead, 26-23, with 3:16 left when McGough threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Victor Bolden Jr. Birmingham linebacker Scooby Wright sealed the comeback win for the Stallions by returning an interception for a touchdown with 2:53 left. - Orlando Sentinel

UCF senior receiver Marlon Williams is opting out of the remainder of the 2020 season to focus on the upcoming NFL draft. The Alabama native is coming off a career best regular season, during which he led the American Athletic Conference in receiving yards (1,039), receptions (71) and receiving touchdowns (10). His 2,260 career receiving yards in 46 career appearances ranks 10th overall in school history and his 19 career touchdowns and 157 career receptions put him at No. 9 all-time in program history. UCF now must wait until Dec. 20 before finding out where it will play this postseason. The Knights would prefer to stay in the state of Florida due to COVID-19 challenges. It would limit their opportunities to Gasparilla, Cure or Boca Raton bowls. - Orlando Sentinel

Williams started eight games this season but missed the season finale against USF Friday, with the school providing no explanation for his absence. He emerged as the go-to option in 2020 after the departure of Gabe Davis, with Williams targeted 105 times.   Offensive depth has never been much of an issue for UCF during Heupel's tenure, particularly at wide receiver. When Gabriel Davis declared early for the NFL draft, it seemed the Knights had many options to offset the loss of his record-setting numbers. Enter senior Marlon Williams, who has quickly become one of Gabriel's favorite options. Williams has been targeted 30 times through the first two games, leading the team in receptions (23) and receiving yards (290). He also has six plays of at least 20 yards so far this season.

"The truth is that Marlon has been showing out forever," Gabriel said. "Last year, there was Gabe and Tre [Nixon] and this year it's Tre, Jacob [Harris]...there's so many guys that we don't have just one guy to focus on and I think that's the beauty of it - that we have a bunch of weapons all over the field." Robinson, who sat out last season after transferring from Oklahoma, has become another deep threat. The redshirt sophomore has 15 catches for 255 yards and two touchdowns. His 17 yards per catch is second behind Nixon's 23.50 average. Robinson's 64-yard touchdown grab against East Carolina was the longest play from scrimmage this season and he has three of the team's four longest plays this season. - Orlando Sentinel
